While I will continue to test drive the tool, I am reporting that so far is seems to be working as advertised after checking the box 'Long Task Handling'. I was able to make a change in the mixer and have it saved to the file. I can see where this is going to be very handy and one of my "go to" tools that I will use frequently.
Thanks again for your work on this and speedy turnaround!
Thanks for getting this posted. I've had a chance to download the latest version (1.1) but haven't had much of a chance to test it out yet. I did get it to work, I think, sort of.
When I run the tool I initially get the Error message STDOUT but no text telling what the error is. Shortly after getting this message the mixer board does come up. All of the staves show up and I am able to change things like Volume, Instrument, Bank, MIDI Channel, etc., but none of the changes that I make are saved when I click on the OK button.
Just wondering with the STDOUT if there is an actual error or issue connect with not being able to save or if it's safe to ignore the message because the mixer comes up and if there is another way to save any changes I make?
Hmmm . . . I haven't noticed this behavior and all seems to work for me. I'll keep and eye out for this over the coming week to see if the behavior changes.
15 hours to go until Christmas Day here in the great Pacific Northwest corner of the United States. Happy to be playing trumpet and singing at tonight's Candlelight Service to celebrate the birth of Christ.
Wishing all in the NWC community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I really like this tool. I can see how useful it could be. However, I ran into a situation.
In the attached clip I'm using a whole rest for one of the measure after the 3/4 time signature change. The tool is returning a value that there is an extra beat (8th measure). It doesn't have the same behavior when the whole rest is after the 4/4 time signature. Is there a way to code the tool to recognize that the use of a whole rest in any time signature represents a rest for the entire measure?
Truly sad new to hear indeed. Rick was "THE" definitive Virtuoso user and go to person. As a user since v 1.31 on floppy disc I have benefitted from Rick's many workarounds and creative ways to make NWC the only tool I used for composing, transcribing, and for creating parts for printing. Such a great loss for this community. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and to anyone touched by Rick's wisdom and skills. His knowledge and wit will be sorely missed here.
Hmm. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but on a simple 2 staff, one lyric song I get the following error message when trying to import the results to a new file:
C:\ProgramData\Noteworthy Software\nwc2\UserPlugins\ExportImportMeasures.lua:121: bad argument #1 to 'sub' (string expected, got nil)
Same to you Lawrie and the rest of the Noteworthy community. On the west coast in the States where Christmas is still 9 1/2 hours away. Looking forward to dinner with the family in a bit and candlelight service at church to welcome Christmas.
Over the years the reasons why and the ways in which I have used Noteworthy Composer have been numerous. When I first purchased NWC (version 1.55 on a 3.5" floppy disk in December of 1998) it seemed to me from the forum discussions that a large majority of people used NWC to input orchestral scores for MIDI playback. This was not the reason I sought out Noteworthy Composer.
The initial reason why I first started using Noteworthy (version 1.55) was to notate and transcribe a piccolo trumpet part for "Let the Bright Seraphim" by Handel that I was performing with a vocalist. It made it a lot easier to read parts than the ones that I created with my poor handwriting and manuscript paper. I then continued using NWC to notate and transpose parts for my Bb Trumpet and A Piccolo Trumpet for hymns for Sunday morning services, music for special occasions, and for weddings gigs. I also used the MIDI playback capability as my accompanist to rehearse and play along with. With the ability to playback the accompaniment as piano, organ, harpsichord or even full orchestras the variety of styles and genres of music I could rehearse were endless.
About a couple of years after dinking around with Noteworthy in this way, I became music director at a local church and began to use NWC with my choir for its ability to play back midi files on a keyboard. I would input piano reductions of musical scores, sheet music, and choir octavos. This allowed for anytime rehearsals with choirs and vocalists when the accompanist was not available and to create rehearsal tapes and CDs to let the musicians and vocalist "hear" their parts and how the music and rhythm should sound. Shortly after this I began to use NWC to compose original scores for musicals that the drama director at the church and I wrote.
I eventually inherited the worship ensemble at the church on top of the choir and began to start using NWC to create arrangements for the worship band and to create lead sheets for the vocalists.
I've recently taken an 18 month sabbatical from any musical activities but continue to follow the developments of NWC. I like the recent developments of MBRs, orchestral bracket, and cue size clefs and cannot wait to dive back into composing and arranging with NWC.
I'm a long time user (since version 1.55) but like Haymo, I'm a bit at a loss as to how and when to invoke nwc-conv.exe. I have read the help screen as Richard suggested but apparently I'm too dense to make heads or tails of what front end command means and what to do to make it work. Is it to be set up as a user tool?
I would agree with David that this tool appears to be geared towards the novice musician or the educator of such novice musicians so I personally wouldn't find much use for this. However, having said this, I did test it out of curiosity and found what appears to be a bug or oversight on the part of the tool.
If you pass throught a clip that contains a grace note and select the output of the clip as Lyric Text in the Note Names tool, unless you change the Lyrics Syllable property for the grace note to Always, it will not recognize the grace note, and thus, will not name the note. However, if you pass the same clip through the tool, regardless of the Lyrics Syllable property, and select the output as Notation Clip Text, the result will paste correctly as well as afix the note name to the grace note.
Not that I'm complaining, as I'm a long time user and love the product, but it would be nice if NWC2 did this (as well as other things previously asked for) natively as opposed to having to use a workaround.
Forgive me if I missed it but is there/will there be a prompt that is to be added to the script command that would allow a user the ability to select the duration of the grace notes, as well as whether the arppeggio is to go up, down or random, each time the script is used or is to be only changed in the "hard coding"?
As you are a user of NWC2, there was a User Tool script written by Andrew Purdam called Scratch. It can be found here along with tutorial on the Scriptorium.
Very odd behavior. Confirmed that this does not occur with Beta 2.07. Seems to follow along the same coding issue as you highlighted in your posting regarding spacing problems (https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=5816.0). This a bit annoying and I would agree that it probably should not be happening.
Seems that the 2.08 update to correct the look of dotted chords has caused behavior unseen before now that appears to be incorrect, musically speaking. Here's an example of what I'm referring to:
In the preceding clip there are two occasions where a pitch is "doubled" (i.e. Soprano and Alto on the same staff singing the same pitch, same note duration and on same beat, scored as is customary with one stem up, one stem down) and dotted where NWC2 places two separate dots for the same pitched note. This appears to be wrong and, at the least, confusing. Prior to 2.08 NWC2 and in NWC1 a "doubled" note that was dotted had the dots overlapped in the same spot so that they were indistinguishable from each other. As a musician, this is what I am accustomed to seeing in orchestral and band music and in church hymnals.
Does this seem wrong to anyone else and should this be considered a true buglet or am I out to lunch?
There is also a script written by Andrew Purdam that will, like your example describes, cut measures 21-24 or can add any number of measures (after you've added them to the first staff you're working on) to each subsequent staff in a large piece. A short tutorial and the actual script is attached. You will need save the file in your Scripts directory in NWC2 and change the file extention from .txt to .php and invoke the script through the User Tool command. While the process is not perfect, it will save the time of having to search for the exact measures in each staff.
Thanks for trying, but for me, Ctrl.+up or down just moves it more spaces then normal.
If you are simply trying to adjust certain notes on the staff, you will find that if you highlight the notes you want to move, press and hold down both the Ctrl and Shift keys and use the up or down arrow keys to move the selected notes, this will work.
If you are truly trying to transpose the notes, say for the sake of a musician who is doubling on a transposing instrument in the same song or because of a key change, that's an entirely different process closer to the one Warren describes.
NWC2 Beta 2.01 includes full support for selecting an alternative NWC2 typeface. It can be found in File, Page Setup, Fonts. It is recommended that any alternate NWC2 system font use a typeface name that starts with "NWC2" in its name. User created typefaces should not use the term "STD" immediately following the "NWC2" in the typeface name.
which implies that any font used must include "NWC2" in its typeface name.
I'm wondering if this new enhancement will eventually lead the way to the use of other commercially produced notation fonts that do not include "NWC2" in their typeface name or if the trend will be towards only user created or modified fonts that do/must include "NWC2" in their typeface name. If it is the latter, does anyone have any suggestions on good resource materials (font editors, how-to's and tutorial) that someone could use to create typefaces that will be compatible with NWC?
There seems to be something amiss with the updating mechanisms for the 1.7 and Beta 2 Viewers.
First, after your announcement of the new Beta 2 Viewer, I tried to check for an update with Version 2.0 Public Preview 1.7 still installed and I received the following message from the Viewer web page:
"You are using the most recent version of this program."
Just curious why 1.7 wouldn't recognize that a newer verison was available.
So I manually downloaded and installed Version 2.0 Beta 2. Just for grins I selected "Check for Web Updates" from the Help menu and was transported to the Viewer's web page which told me:
"An update for this program is available. You can acquire the update from the following page:
NoteWorthy Composer Viewer Download Start Page"
Thinking that my system might not fully know that I had installed the latest version, I rebooted my computer.
After logging on again and opening the viewer once more and selecting the "Check for Web Updates", I again got the message that an update is available. Thinking "It may be possible Eric has issued an update already", I went ahead and clicked on the link and was sent to the Viewer Download Start Page. I downloaded and installed the update and for grins I go through the whole exercise again. Guess what? I still get a message that an update exists.
So to complete the experiment I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the viewer including Version 2.0 Public Preview 1.7, rebooting my computer after each action all with the same results.
Sorry to be so longwinded with this message but I wanted to give you as much information and let you know that I've cover all of the logical possibilities before I posted this as a possible bug.
Works like a charm! Eric, this is a wonderful bonus feature to the latest update. And thank you Lawrie for your great work on the 2 replacement fonts. Hopefully, if the experiment is a success, the future command will have a dropdown of available fonts to select from (for us lazy people who have to keep looking up font names and promt commands) and that it will also inspire others to create new fonts (shaped notes, gregorian chant notation, etc.).
Thanks for the quick turnaround. You certainly couldn't rely on or expect this type of rapid response from that major software company located in Redmond, Washington.
Confirmed here also. In addition, it will not allow you to tripletise quarter notes (crotchets for you folks on the other side of the pond) or, for that matter, any equal duration of notes you wish to tripletise in a group of three or any type of combinations of an eighth note and quarter note (quaver and crotchet) triplet.
In Example b in v.2, if you chose not to mirror the sixteenths in each staff and mute certain notes you can also have playback sound correct by highlighting each individual note and changing its individual transposition under Staff|Staff Properties|Instrument.
Looks like Eric has gotten the links to this site up and running on Noteworthy Software, Inc. The link is called My Community on the top of the home page and Online Community on the NoteWorthy Composer Support page.
This is starting to be fun! [glow=red,2,300]Bravo[/glow] and [glow=red,2,300]way to go[/glow], Eric!!

Took me a while to figure out what happened to the forum. Glad I found the new site. Good work Eric. I would agree with others about links to this new area to assit those folks like me who are a little slow at figuring out what's going on sometimes.
Anyway, let's also hope that this new process keeps user !ME! from following us and darkening our virtual doorway.
