General Discussion / Re: Changing the key signature
Listening as a former chorister, unfortunately no longer in business, it's really nice to hear these "tricks" of the trade. Well done and some as usual always available!
54
Tips & Tricks / Re: Slurs or ties direction
(In the preparation of my message I had written: "There is a solution: select everything and give the desired direction to the slurs in the "notes" field". Then I deleted this part  :)) ).
I wish I could do this BEFORE, i.e. set the direction of the slurs (ties) independently of the direction of the stems. Eg: if I write the bass part, stems down and slurs/ties down too. Am I asking too much? The solution you proposed (and which I still use) remains valid, even if it is a bit more laborious.
Furthermore, sometimes the slurs (only the slurs...) thus obtained have a horrible appearance, they look like bird traps...
With patience you have to use the markers to accommodate them!
Anyway thanks.

Tips & Tricks / Slurs or ties direction
Good morning,
in my scores the direction of the stem of the notes is always this: first tenors "up", second tenors "down", baritones and basses equally. Here's my question.
When it comes to inserting ties or slurs, is it possible to give the "up" or "down" direction BEFORE inserting the slurs or ties and for the entire length of the score? In other words, is it possible to set the direction of slurs or ties INDEPENDENTLY of the direction of note stems?
Thanks to you.
Lorenzo

General Discussion / Re: staves with different time signatures
I do not want and above all I am not able to enter into the merits of the discussion on the subject I have raised. But to show you that "I've done my homework" I am attaching my nwc file and the original score, once again my thanks.
Good evening.

General Discussion / Re: staves with different time signatures
Thanks to both of you. I really wouldn't have thought of the triplet solution, but let's face it... my musical culture doesn't go that far.
I will calmly and patiently apply your instructions. There are few measures to arrange with class!
Thanks again and good evening.

General Discussion / staves with different time signatures
Good morning to you.
I came across a score in which at one point the tenor staff and the bass staff have different time signatures. I am attaching the score for greater clarity.
In bars 6 to 9, 15 to 18 and 24 to 27 the tenors and basses have different time signatures.
I solved it "roughly", by inserting fake notes (mute, without text and not visible) that filled the spaces created by the different time signatures. I put the code of the various parts.
I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way to approach this.
Thank you.
Lorenzo

General Discussion / Re: Final variant
Maybe you can try to place  "variant ad libitum" where you want it with the markup composer too?
I tried and tried with markup composer, nothing to do, also the terrible "gap" area gets messed up. The solution proposed by Mike (thanks again!) is simple and effective.
A grateful Lorenzo.

General Discussion / Re: Final variant
Here are the results
res. 1. from staves
res. 2. from the print preview
I couldn't get the wording "variant ad libitum" to stay more to the left, even if I inserted it in two lines. That is land of the gap and woe to penetrate it!
Well so too! I worked with Opagust's markup composer (thanks!) to create the copy/paste and then in the properties for later, small adjustments.
Grazie!

General Discussion / Re: Final variant
Thanks Lawrie,
I assumed that the solution was in the "gap" and I had also tried, without result. Now that I know that the way is certain, and moreover with your suggestion links, I will try again, also adding the dashed lines of connection.
Good Sunday to you!

General Discussion / Final variant
Good morning.
I ask if it is possible to arrive at a result like in the attached image. These are the last two measures of a piece, with an ad libitum variant.
Thank you.
Happy weekend to you!

General Discussion / Re: Oblique lines between two staves
Hmm,
I have read your learned explanation several times, with mine and your image in view.
I understood all the references to the melodic lines and now, thanks to you, I know the function of the lines that connect notes placed on different staves.
Instead, I only partially understood your observations on what concerns the correctness of the composition and harmony but I don't pretend nor would I be able to understand it: we are on two different floors, I in the cellar, you on the roof of a skyscraper!  :D
Thank you very much!

General Discussion / Oblique lines between two staves
Good morning,
in my ignorance of music theory I am not able to interpret the meaning of the oblique lines that I have highlighted in the attached image.
I see a line going from a Bb/Db chord on the top staff to an Ab on the bottom staff. In the next bar the line goes, always from top to bottom, from a Cb to an Ab.
What do these lines mean? In NWC can they only be written as text (x)?
Thank you.

General Discussion / Re: Note of a chord
Unfortunately, extra accidental space is not one of the things you can change.  Extra accidental space, like extra note space, will affect the whole chord.  The only way I can think of to add extra space to a single chord member is to use layering.
Thanks Lawrie,
I just wanted confirmation on that.
Good day.

General Discussion / Note of a chord
Good morning.
I ask if it is possible to intervene on the single note of a chord. I know it is possible to delete it (ctrl+backspace) but I would like to understand if I can e.g. add an accidental, create an extra space for accidental, move the note up or down. If this is not possible, is the only solution to delete the component of the chord and write it again? In this case, how can I create in the new note an extra space for the accident?
Thank you and happy Sunday to you.

General Discussion / Single staff and double staff
Sometimes, when transcribing voice/piano scores, one finds measures that have notes with stems pointing in both directions in the same staff. I'm always in slight trouble in these cases. Then I add a second line, where I transcribe the notes with the stems down, inserting rests where the meter requires it. I wonder - and I ask the musician friends of the forum - if, in order to avoid inserting too many rests, it is permissible to "break" chords (they are often bichords), inserting in the supplementary line the lower note of the chord that appears in the upper line, the one " official". I hope I made myself understood. I attach an example and my solutions.
Thanks and happy Sunday.

General Discussion / Page view
Good morning to you all.
I ask if the percentage value of the page display ("Print preview") can be changed.
You go from a minimal view to a too large one.
Maybe it doesn't depend on NWC but on PC settings?
Thanks and have a nice weekend!

General Discussion / Re: Ties up and down in a chord
Thank you both.
Lawrie's solution was simple, how did I not think about it? I tend to give an "up" or "down" direction to tie and to slur and I don't consider that there is a third option.
I know the problem Mike pointed out: I shortened the stems of the quarter notes A b/C, even if it's not a pretty sight. I could add another line, with the notes joined by Slur.Cubic.ms (then working on the vertical positioning of the slur) and make them mute, leaving the notes present now  with "sound", but not visible. Tell me if it's a valid solution, but above all ... if it's worth it.
Thank you and have a nice day, it's five o'clock in the morning here and mine has just begun.

General Discussion / Ties up and down in a chord
I ask if it is possible to change the direction of a tie of one of the notes of a chord. In image 1 ("misure difficili", clef of C) the low F ties are pointing down and do not interfere with the C/A chord, which belongs to another staff. I am attaching my attempt, which failed, in the nwc file, with joined staves (2. "due misure unite") and with separated staves (3. "due misure staccate").
Thanks to you.

General Discussion / Re: alternating number of verses
Bingo Lawrie!!! Thanks, I'm doing more tests now, but everything seems fine.
Why do I never think of these little solutions???

But if I always managed by myself I wouldn't have the pleasure of talking to you  :).
A cordial greeting to you.
Lorenzo

PS: by the way I posted a rather confusing and messy nwc code, apologies.

General Discussion / Re: alternating number of verses
So, I've solved the alternating verse problem as pointed out by HMMueller.
However in the press, they appear:
1. the number of lines in each line
2. the number of verses even where there is no text
I put the complete nwc file and the pdf of the print.
I explain that the song is a dialogue between a female barber and a soldier who wants to have his beard trimmed.
Baritones and basses sing like soldier, tenors like female barber.
The 5th verse everyone sings.
Eh, with Google translator I don't know what will come out!!!  :D
Thank you and happy Sunday to you.

General Discussion / alternating number of verses
Good day to you.
I ask for information. I need to number the verses of a song alternately (1. 3., 2. 4.). Using the user "Verse number", is it possible to do this? I've made a few attempts to no avail. The attached image should clearly explain what I intend to achieve. If the solution is not possible, I will use a text.
Here in upper Italy, snow and cold, Christmas time.
Thank you.

Resolved! I'll have to study the meanings of the terms well, it's always a delicate operation for my almost non-existent English.
Thanks, Mike e Lawrie!

General Discussion / Re: Melisma
Hello, I'm bringing this topic up again due to a problem that I can't solve, and there is definitely a solution. After setting the "Melismatic.nw" object, the melisma does not appear.
The same score, but from a different "edition", brings it up correctly. I superimposed the two staves and they look perfectly the same (see image) but in one melisma ok, in the second "fugitive".
I also try to insert the code of the two lines. For practical effect, drafting the score, I arrive at the desired result, but I'd like to understand why the melisma is not seen in the second line.
Thank you.

General Discussion / strange notes (for me)
Good morning,
I am addressing you gentlemen musicians, I am not and you will have noticed it  ;D.
At the end of a long transcription work I came across these notes (see attachment). Time is a Common time (C). What should be done in these cases?
Thanks and a good weekend to you.

General Discussion / Re: Note in number
Good morning to you all.
I speak not on the subject but to give due credit to those who care, with kindness and competence (often these two aspects are in conflict with each other...), to provide information for the correct and satisfactory use of NWC. It must be said! This is the function of a discussion group. I am always admired and happy to see the calm and exhaustive answers to the questions posed in the forum, first of all mine. Well done you all!

General Discussion / Re: internal and external slur
That's right, Mike! In fact, the contact of the internal slur with the stems of the notes is not stylistically pleasant: the ends of the slur should be slightly spaced from the stem of the notes. So with the users mentioned the stylistic problem is solved in an excellent way, even if, when there are many of these two-note groups, the work is long and very patient.
In my opinion, being notes at different pitches, you don't even need to add the ligature (;): just enter the user.
Many thanks.
Lorenzo

General Discussion / internal and external slur
Good morning to you!
I wonder if it is possible to tighten the slurs inside and not above a group of two joined notes. I know that it is possible to work and fix the slur with the user slur.ms and slurCubic.ms and with the combination Alt Gr + @.
I was wondering if this is not possible automatically.
The slurs above the joining bar of the two notes often take away space and are also unsightly from a graphic point of view. I enclose two images that explain better than many words.

Here in my city (Trento, northern Italy) wonderful autumn weather, wonderful colors and almost summer temperatures.
Good Sunday.
Lorenzo

The sun is back, I hope it will shine for a long time - in a metaphorical sense - for you too.

General Discussion / Melisma
In the attached image, the final measure of the two staves has a "brevis" (8/4). I solved it with the "brevis" in text format, while for the music I inserted two "semibrevis". User melismatic is set. How can I make the last syllable fall perfectly on the "brevis", without any signs of melisma? Or, is it possible to interrupt the user melisma within the staff?
Excuse my exposition, always the fruit of the almighty but foolish Google translator.
Good Sunday to you (it's raining here in northern Italy).

General Discussion / Re: stems horizontally split
Just for fun: "agreement" in Italian is "accordo"... the same word as for "chord", hence the Google mistranslation.
May years ago, in the first try for automatic translation back and forth to Russian, the sentence "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" came back as "the wiskey is fine but the steak is soft."  :))
Maurizio, if you weren't there to brighten up the days! Sometimes I think that a nice forum in German would not find me so unprepared and without the obligation to resort to the Google translator.
Hello.
Lorenzo

General Discussion / Re: stems horizontally split
For the highest note (the D ?) on it's appropriate staff,  go into note properties for the note and then set the extra note spacing to 1 and override stem length to 0 .
Then although you will see a light stem in the editor, if you print out the music or use the viewer mode of viewer, then you will not see the stem and the chord will look correct.
Thanks, done! It's a nice expert trick which you are!
I wrote "key" but I wanted to write "clef" (bass). The affected note is a Fa.

General Discussion / stems horizontally split
Dry question. Is it possible to invert the stem of the note horizontally, so that it appears to the right of the head if it was previously to the left? Turn it 180 ° C? I would like to arrive at a representation like the one shown and circled in the annex but without using the agreement. The four voices - this is a key of F - are on separate staves.
Good day to you! Take care.

General Discussion / long vertical glissando
Good day to you,
here I am with my request.
It is possible to graphically obtain the glissando shown in the attachment.
If you then explain to me how to obtain it also from a targeted point of view, I will spare you another intervention  ;D .
Have a nice Sunday.

General Discussion / Re: Start-Cancel/Forbid collapsible section
Thank you! I try to answer, as far as possible, always quickly but my interventions go through the Google translator! I have read your observations, always valuable and relevant. I didn't understand everything: I'll try to understand better, using the complete guide (translated ...). The only point on which I can answer you without difficulty is the "semibreve" argument of the 9th bar. I am attaching an image that should clarify the doubt.
Thanks again for your help and a happy night / evening / morning / afternoon, depending on your time zone ...

General Discussion / Re: Start-Cancel/Forbid collapsible section
Good day to you,
here is the raw version of my "Deep River" (transcription by R. Dionisi for male choir). I started from scratch, inserting as many staves as there are various parts that split, come back together, etc., scrupulously following Lawrie's precious indications. I discovered - but it was probably a discovery just for me - that the overview of ALL the staves allows to give a complete and correct picture of the transcription. I only selected some parts, the ones that interested me at the moment, and the staves remained empty! When I entered all the notes and selected ALL the staves, I got what I was looking for. My problems - no problem, really, just indifference ... - with the English language cause these troubles. I thank you for your patience and Lawrie in particular!
Of course, any comments, advice or reproaches are welcome!
Lorenzo

PS1: in bar 9, voice of ten. II, there is a semibreve alone, I should have inserted another staff just for her. I haven't entered it. Tips?
PS2: I have not yet managed to connect the various staves with the grand staff brace, I will study them.

General Discussion / Re: Start-Cancel/Forbid collapsible section
Hi Lawrie, your result is just what I was looking for and I have not been able to achieve! Optimal! I have to study your code and the consequent nwc file thoroughly and get a clear and definitive idea of the use of collapsables. The original score that I attached to my first speech lends itself perfectly to this purpose  >:( .
Thank you very much and have a nice day.
Lorenzo
