Running Software on Wine is never a good idea.
I know it can reach the same speed, but still its an foreign object in your host system.

The better way is alway using native software. This is native Linux notation software or boot Windows to use NWC.

He just could go open source and sell binary copies in windows and sell support. Additionally he could accept donations with wishes what features need to be improved.
Or he could just do all that but not on the NWC but on some Cross-OS (win, linux, mac) notation editor with similar goals, for example www.denemo.org which can do much what NWC can't and is requested all the time (multi measure rests etc.) but could throw in his experience with NWC (user interface, notation+midi etc., windows compiling) and make the best possible notation editor.

Since this example, Denemo, is GPL he could even sell his own versions of it or a fork of it. There are quite some programms which make more money with donations and selling cds, even when the code is freely avaible. Especially for programms like NWC and Denemo which are for a quite small user-group.  Additionally other people get involved and a better notation programm is the result. Things like the Google Summer of Code are possible, too (the NWC-dev could work on his own programm for several month but will be paid by google for it)

I hope this post will not be deleted. This is not to try get users away from NWC but to show alternatives in developing such a programm like the NWC.

It does not matter anymore. But the "never say a thing and ignore everything" from the noteworthy-dev  is not, like he said one time, to not disappoint anyone. For me it looks like ignoring the users and beeing intransparent.

So before the discussion goes completly into retroprinting I just wanted to summerize:

NWC is windows only and there will be no change in terms of how nwc is distributed and the philosophy of developing nwc as a closed-source, closed-saveformat app with no possibility for the user to either know what will be in future (because there is no public roadmap) nor the chance of influencing it.

Of course I meant "no" programs. I corrected it in the initial post.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want this thread to be a pro/contra open source thing.  I may not like closed source, but I bought the NWC so there is no question in that :) There are ways to live from open source, donations etc. See some linux audio programs like Ardour. But thats not the thread meaning.

The focus for me is the further development, features etc.

Greetings developers,

I'm asking myself, and think its for public interest, what are the plans for version 2 final and beyond that.
I think you've got a lot of feature request and you have a lot ideas. But I can't find anything about the future. Besides that I don't have a clue what team is beyond the NWC. How many persons, is it a full time job etc. ?

To be honest I must admit that I'm a linux user and I'm not statisfied with closed source software and such relative(!!!!) slow-developing programms like the NWC. I searched a lot for a substitute but there a noprogramms like the NWC, so thats why I'm still here and using the NWC as last closed source programm.

The key 0 is a very good idea. Just reset everything which you can do to basic, most common parameters.

But I think a better idea is to replace the quarternote (as standard) with the basic value which is currently active in the current staff/bar. So if your in 6/8 the eighthnote is probably the note you need.

Yes, i have.

But this is not very comfortable. I would rather use the midi port to a sampler directly then and have no synced start.
I've asked the same question in the linux audio user mailinglist and they said yet its not possible to "hijack" a midi-application with alsa-midi. Maybe if JACK-midi is ready, they said.

But at this time, as long as you, the developers, will not change NWC (possible with the winedev lib to build a standalone linux-nwc without much changes and work) to JACK support there is no way.

Hello!

I've tested NWC2 several times with WINE in Ubuntu. It works fine, as we all know. You can even connect WINE (and so NWC) through JACK with other applications.

I know, that NWC is not a linux programm, but I wanted to ask if you all know (or the developers know a way) if it is possible to let NWC receive the JACK transport instructions. So it would be possible to sync the start with some audio programms and it would be possible to make a in-sync record of every nwc-midichannel to a seperate audio-track in a DAW (for example ardour) for further editing.

General Discussion / Grace Notes on time and before time
Since my first experiences with nwc years ago I noticed, that all gracenotes are allways before the time. So the count starts on the grace notes and the following has its duration minus the grace notes.
But in music its necessary to have them right before the time, too. That the duration for the gracenotes ist substracted from the note/rest before it.

How do you do that, community?

What is the connection between loading Soundfonts into your Soundcard and starting NWC?  my experience with soundfonts and other samplers later nwc will not load them directly, it will just send midi to the port.

Well, all in all I think about the 2. Version that its just an enhanced 1.75 version which is many years and many detailed, little and some big features apart from the 1.x branch, so that it comes out as a new programm.

I think I could do mainly everything what I do in 2.x what I've done in 1.75 . Which is good, because so its keeping the good things and improving them.

I've done it!
What I've forgot (I didn't know it and all the time I only thought about Noteworthy itself) is that WINE itself is capable of JACK.

Here is my setup:

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) comes with ALSA. (that is not so important)
then JACK trough QT Jack Control Interface.
Fluidsynth through Qsynth with a random GM-Soundfont (SF2) from Hammersound.net (.com?)
then you need libjack, I used synaptics package manager for libjack0.100.0-0 and libjack0.100.0-0-dev
WINE has to be a pretty new version, I have 0.932 . With the package from ubuntu 6.10 you will get JACK Errors.
NWC2, a version after the WINE Patches (.9 or .11 ?)

now, in terminal, run winecfg and go to the audio-tab. You should get no warnings or errors, specially none about JACK.
deactive all drivers, because probably ALSA or OSS is already activated, and then active JACK and everything concerning JACK.

close the config-dialog and then launch NWC. In the Midi menu choose the fluidsynth directly. Maybe it will be a bit slow at first and take some time, but I will go on.
Then play. If you don't hear anything be sure that in your JACK Connections Fluidsynt is connected to your PCM output.


My next step is to run the Linux Sampler Project instead of Fluidsynth. I think that would'nt be a big problem. Then I have support for die *.gig Sample Format.

Just a little Report.
I switched to Ubuntu 6.10 and trying to use it as a musicians/composers System. For me, the workspace and feeling is very important for composing. I very much like the linux and open source spirit and I always wanted to switch.

Now its done.
NWC2 with WINE works fast and with no complaining. But I have difficulties with my Midi Output, with Ubuntu in generally.
I thought I was pretty good with all these sequencer, sampler and midi stuff, but now it turns out that linux is a bit more complex (in positive as in negative meaning) with Midi and Audio. All these JACK and ALSA and OSS and you have to keep watch what is running because they are blocking each other...

However: I didn't heard a note out of NWC2 in Wine. That doesn't mean, it has anything to do with NWC, I think its more WINE and this ALSA/JACK thing, because I'm running JACK for my sampler and I dont think WINE has JACK Support. But I dont know if this counts for midi.. I see all the Midi-Ports (inclusive of JACK and the own Sampler Port) in NWC and its playing, but there is just no output.

Generally it works. I connected my Midi Masterkeyboard to my M-Audio Audiophile 2469 and can use NWC to grab the Input (only plain input tested, no recording). Second I can use this Master Keyboard to connect to the Sampler (in JACK) and I can hear the Soundfonts.
All in all, it looks like a softwareconnection problem. I'll see how it turns out.

All in all I just want to use NWC. I don't like the WYSIWYG Editors in whole paper-format, I like the scrolling and the complete partiture-layout without breaks as we all know it. I don't know any other program which is similar to NWC, especially in Linux. Since I have still WindowsXP Notebook I will continue to use NWC.  But WINE is WINE... its not an emulator, but It's still an additional layer with additional problems :(

Why don't you go Open Source or make at least a linux version, Noteworthys? :)

hm, yes.. excluding from barcount could be a way. I hope this workaround will not turn out as a problem for some situations with my comment/tempo/drone track.

Now, after testing, I have to say that this mostly a help for you mind. instead of having numers like 8, 32, 55, 89  as Part-Bars in your mind you now have to memorize straight numbers 1 2 3. The excluded bars are still bars, so crtl+lef/right will jump one bar. For quick jumping around this way is a bit confusing, too.

I stay at my "feature request". The barcount-thing is quite nice, but its just an workaround.

Hello Community and NWC2-Team,

when I'm writing music in NWC2 I mostly use a tempo-track which I also use for comments and notes (just with "X" a text).

What I miss in NWC2 is the possibility to jump around a bit. Of course, ctrl+Left/Right works for going fast through my bars and if you know your Bar-Number you can jump easylie there.

But it would be perfekt if I could just add a jumping mark and then jumping there or scrolling through by some keyboard-shortcut like Alt+Left/Right.

Eventhough it's not official (which, I think, means 'no support') I think this really helps for the popularity of NWC2 which is a tool I prefer because of it's low cost and its handyness.

What holds me away from using Linux is actually the NWC and GigaStudio.
But I've seen, there is a Linux sampler project which makes *gig Files Avaible. With the NWC2 in WINE it would be really nice.

What about doing a feature request? Breves, longas and other types of notes are certainly needed in different kind of musics. Is it possible to get these as a full feature?

This would even be a resolution for the issue when you double (key "+") a staff with already whole notes in there, that they stay whole notes and everything gets wrong.

General Discussion / One note shown - another one is sounding
Hello,

I wanted to ask if its possible [NWC2beta] to place one note into an regular staff, but having another one sounding. Thats good for harmonics, special tones or even for drums, when I want to use a GM-bank but need a different notation.

In other words, it is possible to transpose just one note or is it possible to make a chord one note muted and one hidden? I know i can do this with a hidden ghost-staff, so this question just deals with a single staff.

General Discussion / Feature Request: Invert Mute Button & Select multiple staffs
Hi,

i'm using Notheworthy software for quite a long time and it is still my tool of choose for composing, although having the options to get quite more "expensive" software.

I'm using the Beta of NWC2 now for a time and want to make 2 Feature request.

One thing is the missing of a "solo" button, inverted mute for one or multiple staffs. I know, there is an Mute list with an reverse-option, but it is possible to make a button for this?

Second: If a piece gets larger, sometimes you want to copy a complete section, not just in one staff. Or you want to delete all measures ("bars"?) between 21 and 24, want to add 3 measures in evey staff at measure 40 or something like this. At the moment, its very hard to do, because you have to edit every staff for its own which is very confusing: Often you simple don't know where you are or you have to delete all after 33 and paste it into another nwc-file, evey staff alone.
A selection and editing mode for multiple staffs would be fantastic. This would enable one to work more structured.
