General Discussion / Re: Help on Repeats
The Samples folder contains several Repeat examples, including descriptions in the File|Info text. This is a good place to start. Pages 23 and 24 in the NWC 1.75 booklet (on the CD) also cover this area.

General Discussion / Re: WMA to Midi
First, there is no magic solution for creating a MIDI file from a digital audio sample. You can find ample information on this by searching in this forum for "WAV to MIDI" or "MP3 to MIDI" phrases. Someone on this forum once described this process as rather like converting a cake back into its original ingredients. This is a good analogy. In general, the best way to do the conversion is by using your ear, then transcribing what you hear.

Here is another way to look at it. A MIDI file can be considered very much like a transcript of a musical performance. If you convert an artist's analog performance into a MIDI file, it is likely that the performance will lose the key analog characteristics that identify it as the artist. If there are vocals, you are all but assured that MIDI files will not work in your situation.

General Discussion / Re: Midiman USB - Midi connector
This can be complicated, given the various options that you can set for handling the import of recorded input, including Tools:Options:Import and Tools:Options:Record.

If you play with both hands, you can manually import the performance using Staff:Import Recording twice: once for the upper pitches that generally corresponds to your right hand, and a second time using lower pitch ranges generally corresponding to your left hand. This enables you to experiment if you are unsure what pitch ranges are best for each hand given the material that you played.

General Discussion / Re: Midiman USB - Midi connector
After you connect your MIDI keyboard to the Midiman, you can simply select the Midiman input driver in NWC from Tools|Options|Record|Input Device. Once this is done correctly, you can enter notes with your MIDI Keyboard directly into NWC, either in step time (by turning on Tools|MIDI Input Active) or real time (by loading up a rhythm part and using Tools|Record).

General Discussion / Re: Cyber Hymnal
It sounds like you have the NWC Browser Plug-in installed, but Internet Explorer is not starting it correctly. You can try uninstalling the NWC Browser Plug-in, then rebooting your system. This might clear the problem and enable you to use the NWC files from the Cyber Hymnal again.

This font is installed when you install the program. You can also find it in the NoteWorthy Composer Program Files area, where you can manually install it.

General Discussion / Re: Need help with audio hardware
debo:

Almost all PC systems now come with sound card support. Most use a 1/8" stereo plug to connect to the PC speakers. These days, this is "line level" audio that you can route into almost any amplification equipment. You simply need to change the 1/8" into the line level input style supported by your sound reinforcement mixing board (most boards support at least one line level input).

As for the choices and trade-offs involved in picking a sound system, there is an almost endless selection of speakers, amps, and mixing boards from which to select. Since you said a small church, your budget is more likely to dictate your choices than anything else. If the building is physically small, this also makes your choice easier. You probably should discuss this with whomever you plan to purchase the equipment from.

General Discussion / Re: Inserting staffs (correct version)
It looks like you might be confusing the addition of staff parts with the change of clef. As Warren points out, changing a clef is as simple as Insert|Clef.

If you want to force the start of a new system at that point, you can use the Force System Break option on the preceding bar line in the top-most staff.

It is also a good idea to look at the samples if you have a misconception about how parts are presented in NWC.

General Discussion / Re: Word to the wise: Update Windows NOW
As an FYI:

We are currently enduring a massive surge of incoming virus e-mail. We are getting about 10 copies of the Sobig virus into our e-mail servers each minute (that's about 600 e-mails per hour). Another 2 e-mails per minute appear to be the Sobig virus, but with the attachment removed (apparently some ISPs detect and filter out the virus, but for some reason go ahead and deliver the one liner message).

Details can be found at:

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5065494.html

We are not operationally effected by this traffic, but it is an interesting insight into how widespread this infection has reached in such a short time.

General Discussion / Re: Chords
What problem are you experiencing? You should be able to enter this without any problem. Type these keys in order while in NWC:

1
<Enter>
<Down Arrow>
<Down Arrow>
<Down Arrow>
<Down Arrow>
4
<Ctrl+Enter>

That should look like what you described.

General Discussion / Re: Sharping Multiple Notes in Chord
Yes. Simply turn on the Sharp option using the mouse or the 9 on your keyboard, then add the notes to the chord using Ctrl+Enter (or Insert|Chord Member). If the Sharp property resets after each note that you add, then you can enable the Tools|Options|Editor|Persistent Note Tools option, which will leave your accidental and other note settings alone when you insert new notes.

General Discussion / Re: Tempo indications
At maximum magnification, the main possible discrepancy between preview and the actual print is in the area of text expressions. Due to differences in text kerning (between screen and printer), sometimes the spacing of the text does not match between the two. However, the bars in each system, and number of systems on a page, should always match between the two.

General Discussion / Re: Channels don't play back
First, check your parts in NWC to make sure that they all assign a MIDI volume. This is done via the MIDI tab of Staff Properties.

If this does not work, you should check the keyboard configuration. It may only support certain channels, or have limitations on how many simultaneous sounds it can support.

General Discussion / Re: Record to Noteworthy with virtual keyboard
llucyy: If you are using Tools|Record, then check your setting for Tools|Options|Midi|Port Usage. If you have this set to While Active, then NWC will stop playing/recording whenever you switch to another application.

In step entry, MIDI keyboard input works similar to computer keyboard input. The Windows' focus has to be in NWC for it to work.

General Discussion / Re: NWC and Windows XP
>So there's basically no solution to this?

It is not yet clear, exactly, what is your problem. NWC has no problem opening NWC files when it is run on Windows XP (assuming file permissions allow it).

If you send us a sample file that is causing you trouble, we might be able to determine the nature of your problem.

General Discussion / Re: NWC and Windows XP
Copying files from a CD using Windows Explorer will result in the files being marked as "read-only" on your hard drive. This will prevent you from saving the files. This will not, however, prevent you from opening them.

General Discussion / Re: Playback has unsteady rhythm?
This probably means that a background process is messing up the timing of multimedia applications on your PC. You might be able to improve things slightly in NWC by turning off the note chase in Tools | Options. However, since you say MIDI files also have this problem, you will have better results if you track down the root cause of the problem.

General Discussion / Re: No Pitch-wheel
There are MIDI pedals that include support for pitch bends, but it would probably be cheaper/more convenient to buy a better MIDI keyboard.

In NWC, you can use an MPC to implement a Pitch Bend sweep over time.

General Discussion / Re: short cymbal notes
You might also have other options. The synth and cymbal sound combination that you are using might have support for muting the sound. Check to see if there is a corresponding mute sound associated with the cymbal sound that you are triggering. The mute sound might be just what you are after to shut off the note sound. Also, there are shorter sound samples that also can be used to create the sound you are after. In these cases, though, you are probably venturing beyond the General MIDI standard except for those few mute sounds included in the standard (see the included DrumRef.nwc sample for a list of the standard sounds). You should probably start with the Hi-Hat sound pair, so you can acquaint yourself with how this technique works (refer to this hi-hat sample).

Additional Info: There are also more expensive solutions to this problem. For example, digital drum kits will often have multiple triggers on the cymbal pads, with the outer pad being used for muting. When combined with a sound module that supports this, a very good facsimile of analog cymbals can be achieved. For example the Roland TD-10 Percussion Sound Module (part of their V-Drum concert package) supports both multiple triggers on the cymbal sounds, as well as controllers that are used to express the location of strike contact with the pad. When combined with a pad that supports these parameters (or software that sends the same trigger MIDI events), the percussion expression can be quite good.

General Discussion / Re: Spacing with underscores
If you want a lyric syllable to attach to a note, then you should use Steve's approach to have a lyric syllable assigned to that note. You can still skip the note in some lyric lines by using the underscore.

General Discussion / Re: Special ending and repeats
If, and how, you can accomplish this depends on the contents of SONG 1, 2, and 3. If none of the songs include repeats within themselves, then you can accomplish this by combining Master Repeats with Special Endings, basically exactly like your lay out shown above. See the Repeat*.nwc samples that come with NWC for more details.

If SONG 1, 2, or 3 includes repeats, then it may not be possible to create the repeat structure that you want. If this is the case, it would be interesting to know why you are combining them, and how the repeat structure work within each song.

General Discussion / Re: MIDI delay in recording?
The MIDISPORT 2x2 is an external MIDI interface, used to connect to external MIDI components. Generally speaking, external MIDI interfaces and components should not suffer from latency, as they are usually designed to be played in "real-time" by a musician/performer. Are you sure that you are actually using the MIDISPORT 2x2 when playing back?

General Discussion / Re: Shave and a Haircut...
If your browser used an old, cached copy of our style sheet against the new layout of our pages, then it would not be surprising to see problems with text colors, backgrounds, and margins. Usually, doing a simple page reload in the browser forces it to acquire all of the current support files, including any linked images and style sheets.

General Discussion / Re: Shave and a Haircut...
It is not clear what you mean. The format for the main page has been changing. There are more planned changes, so don't be surprised if it does not look the same when you visit.

General Discussion / Re: NWC to MID
The import/export were moved to Open/Save As because questions like the one that started this thread came up all of the time. Since the move, we still get questions about how to do it, but far fewer than before.
