General Discussion / Re: cannot print help!!
It sounds like you have a faulty printer setup. Usually, the best course of actions is to try the following, in order, until you fix the problem:

  • Check your printer settings; from the Windows Start menu, select Settings | Printers, then review your default printer selection

  • Check with your printer manufacturer for the most reliable drivers for your version of Windows

  • Uninstall the printer, then re-install with drivers that were known to work for you in the past

General Discussion / Re: Printing odd/even pages
At the moment, NWC does not natively support these options.

Some print drivers include support for various options. There is also software that can be used to lots of things with your printouts, including what you describe.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: NWC Version 1.75 + Web Update 8
Stephen: It sounds like you may have had Update 8 back in Reply 1. A rest can be inside a beam, but it cannot start it.

Also, note that your beams that enclose rests will not persist on older 1.75 versions. In older versions, the beam will disappear. As long as you stay with the latest release, this will not be a problem.

Version 1.75 Discussion / NWC Version 1.75 + Web Update 8
NoteWorthy Composer Version 1.75 + Web Update 8 is now available. This newest update adds support for beams across rests, changes triplets such that stem direction is no longer altered when assigned, and fixes a problem with lyrics when placed underneath a slur.

For full details, refer to the news.

General Discussion / Re: instrument problems
What do you mean by "if I want to change the instrument, the program will not allow it" in your post?

Each staff should be using its own MIDI channel. You can change the initial instrument for a staff using Staff Properties (F2). You can insert instrument changes directly in the staff using Insert | Instrument Patch (I). You can make sure that your current staff is using its own unique MIDI channel using Tools | Score Review (R).

General Discussion / Re: MIDI keyboard to a AWE64 sound card. No transmission detected.
Focus on play back first. When you can play something in NWC and hear it playing on the PSR-260, then you know that your cables are hooked up properly.

Now, turn on Tools | MIDI Input Active and press some keys on your PSR-260. If you do not see any notes show up in NWC, then either:

  • (most likely) your MIDI input driver/hardware (on your computer) is not working, or

  • your PSR-260 MIDI out port is not working, or

  • (least unlikely) the input side of your MIDI cable is faulty

General Discussion / Re: Problems with Printing
As a high school student, you can be excused for expecting to get everything for free, as this probably defines your current lifestyle. In your defense, you have been honest as to your status. However, classifying our evaluation version as SPAM is quite a stretch. If you elect to download and try out our evaluation version, this is your choice. You are warned before printing that an order form will be included, and the download is clearly labeled as an evaluation. You are not the victim of spam in this scenario, as each step of the way, you are taking affirmative steps to get the result that you experience. If you do not like it and cannot afford to purchase, simply discontinue your use of the program.

General Discussion / Re: File Tool Bar is unstuck
If you hold the control key down, this will prevent docking. Otherwise, the toolbar will dock when you get near the edges. If you have trouble with this, for whatever reason, you can always just double-click the title of the toolbar, which will automatically dock it.

General Discussion / Re: vibrato...
MIDI synthesizers support a variety of "controllers" which can change the tonal characteristics of the sounds you hear. You probably played a song file that changed some of these controllers. You have two choices:

  • You can try to reset the controllers using NWC, as in Fred's first suggestion (at the start of the staff, use the Insert|Multi-point Controller to change the Modulation Wheel setting).

  • Usually, sound card synthesizers do not retain controller settings after they have been powered down. Using Fred's second suggestion, you can simply power down your computer, then restart it, and your settings should be back to normal defaults.

General Discussion / Re: Balance problem
I assume that the new computer has a different sound card. Different sound cards/synthesizers can respond differently (or not at all) to stereo panning.

General Discussion / Re: File Tool Bar is unstuck
This file will only exist if your have customized your toolbars. It defines the contents of your toolbars. The actual location of your toolbars is stored elsewhere (the nwc.ini file, to be exact).

General Discussion / Re: Crystal Soundfusion Sound Card Problem?
You probably have a BIOS option to disable the motherboard's built-in sound. Make sure you do this. If this does not work, you might check for a newer version of your BIOS, but only do this if you know what you are doing. If you make a mistake when flashing your BIOS, you could render your PC useless.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: How do I get instr.names of new fonts in NWC?
As you start learning more about how this works, you could initially select your patches by number (select Numeric from the drop down box). If you settle on a bank of sounds that you like, you can then go to the trouble of making modifications to the NTWPATCH.INI file to include your new soundfont bank.

General Discussion / Re: Change in displaying non-visable beamed notes: kills user tip 82
This is not a bug. If the editor did not show the beam segment for the hidden note, then you would not be able to tell its duration by looking. In the editor, the hidden segment is shown, so you can tell the note's duration. When printing, the note and its beam segment are ignored (just as is indicated by the hidden color in which it is shown while in the editor).

General Discussion / Re: Trying to convert midi to notation - too many staffs result
This means that your MIDI file contains more than 2 tracks. As David points out, if you believe that all of these tracks rightly belong to a piano grand staff, you can layer them (although this would be unusual). A better approach would be to listen to the result, and then remove any tracks (staves) that do not pertain to piano (for example, remove any percussion tracks).

General Discussion / Re: Instrument sounds
You probably won't get too much comment on this, since most people want to improve the quality of the instrument sounds they hear. Your post reads as though you want to make your card sound worse, rather than better.

You have 128 standard MIDI sounds to work with in trying to find one that sounds to your liking. If you cannot find one that sounds like your old card, you might try exploring the world of software synths that support sound fonts. With sound font technology, you can load up a suitably "cheap sounding" set of instruments, thus emulating the sound of your old card. Since you desire that old sound, your preferred font should also have the added benefit of having a fairly small memory footprint. Search on soundfont for more details.

General Discussion / Re: external MIDI clock
NWC does not support external MIDI clock, either as a source or a receiver of the clock information. In this case, you should use a MIDI sequencer to handle your MIDI synch needs.

General Discussion / Re: Mozilla 1.2.1 Noteworthy plugin under XP
If the "gibberish" you see is the actual NWC file, then the site you are testing with is not sending the correct mime type. Mozilla still requires the correct mime type from the web site in order for plug-ins to work. IE, on the other hand, will often rely on the file's extension, and ignore the mime type. This is probably why you are getting it to work on IE and not mozilla. Try testing from our samples section first, to see if your setup is correct.

General Discussion / Re: 2 very basic questions about MIDI / NWC
A track is a term to describe a collection of MIDI events that belong to one another inside a MIDI file. Sequencers also generally use the concept of tracks as a way for the user to group a series of MIDI events into a collection. The closest thing to a track in NWC is a staff, although it is not really the same thing.

A MIDI channel can best be though of as an instrument in a MIDI synthesizer device. Most MIDI synthesizers support multiple channels (up to 16 per device), with each channel being able to sound like a particular instrument (usually user definable, such as is done in NWC). The exact instruments supported by each channel will often be device specific, but normally General MIDI instruments are supported on most channels, with the exception of channel 10. MIDI Channel 10 is generally reserved for percussion sounds, with different percussion instruments sounding at different note pitches.

General Discussion / Re: problems printing my composition
Without your file, it is hard to tell you the problem. Fred points out one likely cause. Another possible problem is caused when measures are not the same length in all staves. If your bar lines do not match up, you will not get proper print output. You can use the Audit Bar Lines facility to find bars that do not match the time signature that you are using.

As of now, the forum's listing of recent posts is available in only one format. The format lists posts in order, from newest to oldest. The list is broken by days, so it is easy to find only the most recent activity.

General Discussion / Re: No Sound !!
Also, there is one or two media file players that stubbornly insist on resetting the MIDI Synth volume to 0 in some computer configurations. This means that your synth volume might be turned down in the system mixer, even though you did not do it yourself.
2287
General Discussion / Re: No Sound !!
Since your problem arrived suddenly, the key is to figure out what you changed and fix it. Common changes are:

  • turning down the volume

  • using the same MIDI device in multiple programs when the device driver does not support this

  • changing the devices used by NWC from Tools | Options but not updating the staff play device (for example, selecting both the MIDI Mapper and another device in Devices used by play back can cause problems unless you are sure that you know what you are doing)

General Discussion / Re: the instrument choices
Your instrument choices are a function of your sound card's MIDI synthesizer. Your sound card, at the least, should support the 128 General MIDI instruments. You can try these from Staff Properties (press F2 while in whatever staff you want to change).

General Discussion / Re: MIDI Playback disabled
The Options | Properties section is used to show or hide various volume controls. Maybe you simply have the Synth section hidden. If it is missing from there, then the Windows XP drivers either 1) do not support it, or 2) need to be updated to the driver set that adds such support.

General Discussion / Re: NoteWorthy Composer vs MIDIs
When you import MIDI events into NWC, the note pitches and durations are the basis for most of the notation that is created in the process. In NWC, dynamics are controlled via Dynamic instructions and articulations that you add to notes. These are not currently added during the MIDI import process.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Installed latest version, but can't see any notation
This behavior is not predictable. It is a problem where the system goes flaky with the font. This can happen when a font is replaced, or removed and replaced, as might be done when reinstalling NWC. We are working on an improved mechanism for installing the font. In the mean time, try rebooting. If a problem remains, go to your Fonts control panel and confirm that the NWCV15.TTF font is installed and working as expected.  Simply double click it to see if it is working correctly. You should see some notation glyphs when you open the font.

General Discussion / Re: Different Drum Kits/Sets
When a sound card/MIDI synthesizer supports different drum kits, it usually does so via patch number changes sent on channel 10. If your synth says it supports different drum kits, then you should refer to its manual for details on how to activate them (what MIDI messages need to be sent to change kits).
2299
General Discussion / Re: Number of copies
Your other programs might include native support for printing multiple copies. NWC does not natively support printing multiple copies. With NWC, the print driver has total control over this. If the box is grayed out, then your printer driver does not support this function.

General Discussion / Re: Using template for imported songs
You don't need to ask the same question twice. In your duplicate post, you made reference to a version 7.00. There is no such version of NWC, and never has been.

As for your query, there is no way to do this in NWC at the moment. As of this writing, the Template feature only works with new scores that you start from scratch. When you import a MIDI file, you end up with program defaults, which you can only change manually after the import process is complete.

We received your thoughtful wish on the subject, and your wish will be given consideration.
