General Discussion / Issue: installing object plugins
The installation of object plugins silently fails if the Object Plugins directory is absent.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a file that uses one or more object plugins.
2. Open the Insert>Object...>Manage Objects dialog.
3. Perform an online synch.
4. Install updates.

Fix:
1. Create the missing directory indicated by Tools>Options>Folders>Object Plugins.
2. Then follow the steps above.

General Discussion / Repeated measures

General Discussion / Discord channel
Let's be honest, how often do you spend 30 minutes to an hour typing a forum post when talking to the same people (assuming people were in the same room as you) would be faster, more productive, and get your question resolved within mere minutes?

Back in the old days, programmers used a chat system known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to speed up conversations and increase productivity. Today, Discord (designed for gamers, but used for all types of online communities) is probably the most popular way to chat, and is packed with powerful features that make it more convenient and easier to use than any other platform.

I'm not suggesting we stop using the forum-- in fact, the forum is a great tool for many circumstances-- but that we strengthen the community by adding this method of communication to our toolbox. Many communities still use forums in addition to Discord, and it's a great combination.

I'll check this post again later for replies (I confess I'm not as good with checking forums as I was 10 years ago), but I'm going to go ahead and set up an unofficial (for now, unless someone officially decides to endorse the idea) Discord server for NWC in the hopes this catches on, even if there are only a handful of users.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Beam subgrouping
Ah, played around some more and found out I can do it without a plugin!

1) Select the first note of the new subgroup (no need to do this for the first subgroup).
2) Right-click > Properties....
3) In the Notes tab, check the Beam group start checkbox.
4) Press [Okay].

General Discussion / String section misses their cue at the end of piano roll
This is probably a sound card issue, but I thought I'd check here and see if anyone else has this problem, or if it's possibly a limitation of NWC.

See the attached file, mm 11-12. The two pianos roll nearly the entire keyboard in a single measure, and the strings punctuates the final beat with a chord.

The problem I'm having is that the strings don't play that chord. It's like they're all missing their cue.  :D

General Discussion / Re: YA ALL ROCK
Yes, I happen to find it an interesting effect, and it does help set the tone...but only if it's tolerable.  And for many people, it's not.  Inspired by Fr. Stan Keroppi's awesome rap rendition of Kumbaya, I decided to borrow the common technique.  It probably would sound better if the strings faded in where they come back in each time, but that's a project for another evening when I don't have to be up early in the morning.

Still glad you like it (and figured out how to turn off the strings-- things like that tend to distract musicians, I've noticed...even myself.  Ever catch yourself only listening to the drums and forgetting to hear the rest of the music?)...by the way, thanks again for uploading the song, kahman.  Saves me reposting it in due time when it will surely come up in another conversation!

By the way, if anyone else has remixes, I'd love to hear them.  I've got a couple others from the same summer, but they weren't quite as good-- almost embarrassing compared to this one.

General Discussion / Re: Trills
Let me give it another try:

tr d
tr e
tr f
tr g
tr h

I made the accidentals smaller and shifted them out from above the "tr".  Smart thinking with the subscript, but it requires a few extra lines beneath the last one.

General Discussion / Re: YA ALL ROCK
While I probably wouldn't want a career like Sir Pauls for myself, I think he beat the heck out of the other three in the post-Beatle category, and still going! - Couldn't get to the file from the link (revolutionary rap, that is).

That's because the link is outdated.  My FileUpYours account expired after 30 or so days of nonuse.  Let me repost it...and while I'm at it, I'll quote my original warning of the song's obscurity (with the new link):

Okay...I know it's been a few months...I even had to email myself my username/password because I forgot my username was just "Bob"...

I arranged this one a couple months ago (I had free time in the summer).

I never thought I would use Chopin and rap in the same sentence, but this post proves me wrong.

Here's my favorite piece by Chopin put to a slightly different beat:

Classical Remix, Op. 2, No. 3: Revolutionary Rap
written by Weird Bob Schnautz (except for solo piano parts)
inspired by Frydyryck Chopin, Fr. Stan Keroppi
http://www.fileupyours.com/files/114697/Revolutionary%20Rap.mid

Enjoy, or else have fun ripping your hair out as you listen.
By the way...the high-pitched noise is a string section holding two notes that are very close in pitch proximity to one another...not the dishwasher in the other room (I had to explain that to my mom). This is a common "noisemaker" in rap music that I find helps set the mood.

General Discussion / Re: Flag groupings for simplified reading
Mmmmm... I found a problem with that suggestion:  If I ungroup the first set of 32nds, and regroup them as groups of four, then the flags go different directions (one's horizontal and the other's slanted).  Can't use your workaround there.

EDIT:  Never mind.  I found a lovely little attribute attached to the note properties called "Override stem length."  That solves my problem and your suggestion works quite well.

General Discussion / Re: YA ALL ROCK
LOL...you've put up with some of my junk, too... in all forms, from suggestions to long posts to cluelessness to deranged arrangements, such as Chopin's Revolutionary Study put to rap!

General Discussion / Re: Trills
If I remember correctly, the trilled flat, etc, would just simply be these:
tr#
trb
trx
trbb <--this one, because of musical technicalities, can only be used in VERY rare instances involving a flat or double-flat on the note receiving the trill, and if the note receiving the trill is only a flat, then the trill note's natural must fall at least three half-steps above the note receiving the trill... consider yourself priveleged to see one in print as you read this post.

A trilled natural would be done the same way, but Verdana font doesn't have an appropriate character for a natural sign, and the NWCV15 font doesn't seem to display correctly as superscript.

General Discussion / Re: "This file was not properly saved"
About sound recorder, even on XP, it can only record 60 seconds of audio.  That's when I switched to Audacity.  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I used to use it on Windows 98se.  I realized that it was impossible to let it record for that long, but I quickly found the trick:

Record 1 second, and hit "Decrease Tempo" a few times until it's long enough.  (It doubles the length, and brings the frequency down to half the frequency, changing the pitch accordingly.-- at least, that was the INTENDED purpose!  Nice tweak there!)  THEN, record over that, and you can easily crop out the stuff at the beginning and end.  I had recordings that lasted over five minutes, possibly six, all made using sound recorder.  And now it's a single button.  So much for that.  It used to be such a powerful tool...

EDIT: Just tested it in XP, and it allows for just over 2.8 hours per file, and just under 3 hours.

General Discussion / Re: "This file was not properly saved"
That's why it's so fast!  ;-)

Fast if you're running it on a dual-core processor with 2 GB of RAM, anyway...Vista is the biggest resource hog of the whole Windows family.  The new computers are hardly enough to keep up with it!  That's why I'm upgrading my RAM this week...

Don't get me wrong, though.  I love Vista for everything but those advanced controls that they took away from us.  E.g. the Sound Recorder is now a panel with single button: "record."  Once you press it, it turns into "stop."  Once you press it again, it asks you where to save it, and there's no editing allowed at all, or even playback.  Urg....  Sound Recorder used to be as close a friend to me as Noteworthy!

General Discussion / When possible, synchronize the initial position of the lyric editor caret
Quote
When possible, synchronize the initial position of the lyric editor caret with the notation editor

I love it!  There are two things I would change, though:
  • The carat needs to be before the word, not after, as it is in the editor.  That, or mine is showing up on the next word instead of the current one.  Here's what I mean.  I clicked between "sky" and "was", so the caret should also appear between "sky" and "was" in the editor.  But instead, it's appearing between "was" and "starless":
    <Image Link>
    Shot at 2007-07-10

  • The lyric editor needs to scroll down to the point in the lyrics containing the caret, so that that line appears at the top of the box.  (Currently, I must still move the scrollbar down, scanning for the caret.)

Thanks for the neat feature, though!  It will definitely improve my lyric editing experience, as I work with church music which contains all kinds of special endings and repeated phrases, making it easy to get lost, as well as working with the chords in the lyric editor! :)[/list]

General Discussion / Re: "This file was not properly saved"
After doing an advanced search (forcing many options), I found them here:  C:\Users\WhateverYourIdentityIs\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\NoteWorthy Composer\FileFolderName
instead of here:  C:\Program Files\NoteWorthy Composer\FileFolderName
Don't know why Vist has to do this...

For those who haven't upgraded yet, "Advanced" in Vista means you can choose the location, the date, the name, tags, authors, and size...although a Vista search has yet to find something for me that I'm looking for.  For some reason, though...Vista searches are not as thorough as XP searches, much less as thorough as Windows 98/ME/2000 searches.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: labeling "right hand" and "left hand" simply as "piano"
"frumious" needs to be pronounced as 2 syllables.

Hence, we'd better read this with a strong British accent like the folks at NPR.

There used to be a popular computer game called Snark, which required finding a set of coordinates containing the snark in a 10x10 matrix using nets of different radii.

Ha...I caught the Snark this time in 1 try...with a hyphen!  :)

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: labeling "right hand" and "left hand" simply as "piano"
Love the graphic, Bob.  I think the hyphen rule is more a rule for when to break a word, not necessarily when to hyphenate per se.

It's actually not a graphic, but formatted text.  Here's the code:
Code: [Select · Download]

Something I learned how to do while adminning forums.

General Discussion / Re: Trills
Yes, Lawrie, thanks for the reference.  I love learning new things about music! :)  So then, this would indeed be called a "tremolo" (of type 2).  Sorry for doubting you.

I always wondered what to call those things...

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: labeling "right hand" and "left hand" simply as "piano"

You're under arrest, Snark.

This may seem a bit simplistic but I just label the Right hand Pia-
and the Left Hand                                                         no

According to Houghton-Mifflin,

 Revised    aside  remon- strated

General Discussion / Re: Trills
That would make it a tremolo, which is a whole 'nother kettle o' fish notationallywise speaking.
I am not at my computer right now, otherwise I'd attach an example of how to accomplish it.
During the meanwhile, you may want to search the forum for "tremolo."
[It is possible but much more difficult in Version 1.  Version 2 is a piece of cake.]

Correction:  In the wonderful world of strings, a tremolo is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a trill.  I'm not sure any instrument would play tremolo with two notes, but in string music, it's Italian or some fancy language for "bow back and forth with tiny strokes as fast as you can for the duration of this note"-- it's sort of like shivering.  I don't know the name for a trill like the one you're talking about, though.  I've seen it in violin music and piano music, and it uses those thick straight slanted lines in between the two notes, which are both written as the duration of the trill.

General Discussion / Re: I Need Some Help With Transcription
I already tried the same song last month with no success.  I was forced to make a LOT of compromises:

The 256th notes at H, although this could be worked around with some tempo adjustments.
Also, NWC doesn't support the 66th note timing at N.
I believe just before D I had making several rubato adjustments in order to allow each note to be played in sequence (which wasn't too bad until I reached the last bit of the first measure of H).
F was pretty simple, and probably the easiest measure I reached  The composer just has crooked handwriting, so it's hard to read.
The last measure of H was quite painful, as the song is SO PAINFULLY SLOW!!!  (At least it would gave you time to read the note and possibly decide how to play it before it comes!)
The instrument patches were fun to place, like the gong and the glockenspiel and bongos and the saxes and the explosives (Gunshot).  I wasn't sure what type of instrument sounded like rigatoni, so I figured it was a tempo change and sped it up a bit to save about ten minutes on the playback time.

By the way, it's not worth all the time and effort.  It will LOOK almost nothing like the original, and it sounds like someone banging out two minutes of seemingly random notes until they repeat it nine more times, and then there's a bit of odd resting, followed by J, which was where I stopped keying it in because I realized I wasted a whole evening on a joke.  It was deleted from my desktop the next day (I saved it the night before only to make myself feel like I had accomplished something!)

By the way, what does a triple-prime above a Bbbb mean?

Oh, and I found the third movement for string quartet.  I wonder where the first violinist finds Sears violin?  I didn't think they made those.

Looks like a very interesting and informative article!  I learned a lot just by skimming through it, like that horns and clarinets are preferred to NOT play vibrato (even though it IS possible)--neither of which I knew.

I must say that while figuring out how to reprogram Noteworthy to do that sounds complex, the feature would work somewhat like the "Lyric Syllable: Default/Always/Never" attribute (I love that feature!) for notes and rests:
"Word extender: Default/Always/Never"

This would allow for the maximum possibilties with the word extender (if NWC2 should incorporate it into the program).

General Discussion / Re: tied note keeps playing
When I switched to NWC2 Beta, the new hanging note fix caught me off-guard...If I remember correctly, I tied my Bb to a forced Bb in the next measure, and the Bb hung there...that's when I realized the issue had been fixed.

Edit: Actually...I'm not sure that was right, but that's how I remember it.  I'll have to do a reenactment when I get home to see if that's really how I figured it out...but if that's true, then I need to redo all my old music...

I agree.  I wish there was a way to do this in NWC2...  It's really pretty simple...any time you tie the word to another note or slur the word to another note (drunk or not), you extend it.  I think it's a feature the lyrics handler needs to be able to take care of, but, in the meantime, it would be nice to have an extender.  I find it annoying that I can't type an underspace into the lyrics, because the underspace functions as a whitespace character, since the whitespace functions as a separator character.

General Discussion / Re: Noteworthy Software en español?
I don't remember whether I was asked my language when installing NWC (apparantly there's not an option, since there's not Spanish), but I think a multilingual piece of software would be most beneficial in promoting the product.  As I browsed through the different notation processors on Wikipedia, I found articlees written in the following languages, meaning there are probably composers in those countries:

English, Español (Spanish), Deutsch (German), Français (French), Italiano (Italian), 日本語 (Japanese), Slovenščina (Slovenian), Slovenčina (Slovak), Nederlands (Dutch), Русский (Russian), Suomi (Finnish), Català (Catalan), Magyar (Hungarian), Latviešu (Latvian), Português (Portuguese), Беларуская (Belarusian), Česky (Czech), 한국어 (Korean), Polski (Polish), ไทย (Thai), Українська (Ukranian), 中文 (Chinese).

I think at a minimum we should have English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese, the more common languages.
