General Discussion / Re: polymetric music?
No that doesn't do anything-good. as you can see from this example and compare it to the previous one there's no way it could be performed.  And in another notation program where I put the system breaks is the same and it lines up in beat counts on both.
Anyone else?
Thanks for trying.

General Discussion / polymetric music?
Hello-
I rarely visit but I've attached a file with each instrument using different time signatures.  In edit mode (which is what I call it the view where you add/change notes etc...) the music looks fine however in view or print it's a mess and unperformable.
I'm wondering if there is a work around?
Thanks

User Tools / can't figure out from the info if this is possible
I thought that the user tool could somehow give me a text that I could then run through and do global changes to notes
what I need....
I use a different notation program to create a slightly better looking score that can do a few things that NWC can't do.  This program also produces a midi file
when I import the file all the flatted notes are registered as sharps and it's tedious to go through and change them all.

So can I somehow get  the user tool to work with me on this or is this not how it can be used.

So far all I've been able to get is text spelling above the notes and changing the text doesn't change the note which even if it did wouldn't save me any time anyway.

Hope I'm in the right place, don't come to the forum too often so if wrong please direct me.
Thanks
Jay

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi-sucess!!!
I had to change a bunch of settings in the externals and then found that the midi input had been turned off (it wasn't last I had looked so no excuses and no explanation) too

But thank you all again for the patience to follow through on this.

Much appreciated

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi new info
maybe I just don't understand something in NWCv-2.
I have never used because to my mind and the way I work, it's useless- the record fuction of NWC.
So I've always used my midi keyboard to enter chords or notes one by one.
Just now I tried the 'record' function and it works- I still would never use it I don't compose that way or think that way but it seems like I now have a slightly different question/problem-
how do I enter the notes like I am used to? From the midi keyboard so that they appear in the score as I play each one individually?

seems like I'm getting closer? I know that one has to ask the right question to get the correct answer.

thanks for your patience

General Discussion / Re: trouble with win7 and midi
William-
ok I get the joke/problem (I'm guessing the the problem is worse jumping from xp-pro to win7 as I am doing)
however- what do you think I'm missing?
I loaded all new drivers for all the externals, win7 says that they are all working-
I've re-examined my connections about 15 times (which does not mean they aren't the problem),
which is why I wrote-I don't exactly know what to check next.

Thanks for thesmile- weather here is misery-

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi
Rick-
ok I installed midi-ox it 'sees' all the elements but then doesn't show anything responding- even though three of them are doing so-
so I guess the trouble is elsewhere but it's got me totally confused as I haven't changed any part of the set up except the new computer.
Just means I go back to entering everything note by note like I used to.

Thanks for trying to help

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi
Rick-
Why would adding another layer (or two) between the program (NWC) and equipment that the program can already see and in play works fine help?
I used midi-yoke when I used garratan and even than what I am trying to get to work now worked better than midi-yoke.

I would like to understand your reason for suggesting this before I add another program to the mess.
thanks
jay

Lawrie- I'm not trying to record the way you mean.  Yes it doesn't work either but I would never enter music that way.
thanks

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi
Hello- unhappily I have answers and no solution.
All the 'input' devices show in the tools option boxes, that's why I'm so perplexed.
As for a driver for the Roland- I'm not sure why that would be needed- the midi into the FantomXR is working- I can hear it and the indicator light informs me that input is happening too.
NWC 'sees' the FantomXR as a midi record device and the FantomXR 'sees' the Roland but no notes appear on the screen when I press a key on the Roland.
Oh and the driver for the FantomXR is up to date.

So I'm stuck.

Unless I'm not understanding something that you are trying to point out to me (which I hope is the case- I'd much prefer that there was an error on my part.)

General Discussion / Re: trouble witn win7 and midi
Not sure how much information you really want but here goes-
a] I knew/know all of what you have written and have tried all the combinations of midi inputs available.
I believe the one thing that I must not have been clear about is playback is not the problem midi works fine in playback mode.
It is in entry mode that I have failed to get anything to work.
Additionally all of the modes that I have tried this time worked in xp.
So here goes.
Midi keyboard roland RD-1000 out
into (choose one)
FantomXR (synth voices) and midi thru to
PreSonus FP10 firewire midi in
or
midi in Juli@ 24/96 soundcard midi in interface.

As I say both the soundcard and the firewire box have worked in the past AND playback via NWC to FantomXR works now but nothing I have tried and still keeping the FantomXR allows keyboard input of notes.

So what next?
Thanks for your reply it helped clean up a confusion that I gave you.

General Discussion / trouble witn win7 and midi
I've been using NWC since it was on a floppy.  So I think/thought I knew how to set the midi up to enter notes.
But a new computer and instead of XP pro ended up with win7
And even though NWC sees my midi interfaces midi entry isn't working and I've got 3 options and none are working.
Is there anyone who has run into this problem and if so did you find a solution?
Thanks

General Discussion / A tacet staff before end of piece, can one do that?
I know how to invisiblize all the notes/rests/barlines in a staff, I have a score where the top vocal line stops well short of the end of the piece and would like to just have it (the staff) stop.
But if I stop it there's no more piece after it in printed view or in print.
So is there a way to end a staff and still have the printed piece continue?
Thanks

User Tools / Re: NWC to LilyPond
I downloaded unzipped and opened (clicked on the exe)
Figured out how to export a nwctxt file
found it browsed and loaded
I have been using lilypond for a number of years etc.... but here's the response I got

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hope you can make sense of this as I've used NWC since it was on a floppy and I'd love to get the scores looking more like Lilypond

General Discussion / Re: Recommendations for two note chords c, c# and a printing problem
Thanks for finding the hanging tie.

Layering doesn't do anything to solve the problem. Unless you mean make it more like an organ/trio score and leave that note hanging out there using up a whole line of a system?

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are talking about in terms of "spelling".

I have been using lilypond for many years and the nwc 'spelling' that you are currently using is incomprehensible to me.  After many  iterations of NWC (I started when it was on a floppy disk 1.55b) I don't understand the use of the txt files- perhaps someday?

As for changing the key that only works when you are on a keyboard.  This will eventually be for strings/winds and the change you suggest would completely alter the overtones etc....

Ok now there's a third reply- is everyone using txt to enter notes in NWC now?  I still believe that there is a huge difference between a c# and db so that just isn't a solution.  But this is turning into a pretty good learning situation for me .

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

General Discussion / Recommendations for two note chords c, c# and a printing problem
In the attached file measure 10 I have a chord that contains c and c# but in performance that would be difficult to discern. What recommendations do you have to make it possible to read this chord and still have it be a chord.

Then in measure 17 there is an errant tie.  Which in playback often does not show as it scrolls but printed and file view and often in cntrl>g 17 does show up.

I've tried to see where my fault is but have no more ideas.

Thanks for any help.

General Discussion / Help with a silent staff
I don't understand the forum setup anymore but here's my problem,
Score is small at the moment, 7 staves, two are single line percussion staves.
Last staff (percussion-cymbal/tinklebell for now) has notes however export to midi = nothing, no sound no material, I have tried to output through a garritan and through a synthfont software and there's no info in the output.
The dynamics are up and midi channel is correct (i.e. no conflict)
So what should I check next- this is the first time I've had this problem in many years......

I'd attach the piece but can't figure out how to do that with this new interface.

General Discussion / Re: Weird sounds
Well this was a surprise.  I don't visit the forum very often, just compose and use the program and scriptorum for saving my compositions.
Responses to comments as they occur to me;
1] I met John Cage and played played his music 5 or 6 times, at least once under his direction.  Was honored to be at one of his last birthday parties.  Influenced? Probably-

2] Gamelan, yes the compositional method is based on both Persian dastgahs and Indonesian selendro models.  Therapy was performed live a number of times.  The instrumentation for Scriptorum is an approximation of what I did and had performed.  Most of the actual instruments were plucked open strings that I created and built, flute, drum, and metallic idiophones- very difficult to simulate with general midi.

3] I don't think of this as minimal music at all.  And I do think of it as melodic, that's been interesting both in live performances and here that someone would say that melody is lacking.  One thing about both Persian and Indonesian music that I had taken to heart is that the melody is stretched out, We in the west are more used to hearing the melody over a very short period of time yet some of my music the melody can take a full minute to hear.

Also I have a tendency to not repeat the melody but to run with it through out the entire piece with little or no repetition (that is not entirely the case with this piece).

4] Lastly for now- what you can't do with midi is give a sense of space, there's no 'room' with midi and most of my performances with that ensemble the audience either surrounded the ensemble or we surrounded them.

5] oh and thank you
Hope this helps

General Discussion / Midi import not working ubXP Pro doesn't let me change extensions
I haven't written in the forum for probably more than a year. But...
I did a quick search. And didn't see the problem I'm having.
For years I've been using various programs to create midi files, including NWC.
Recently I was forced to get a new computer with XP-pro.
In regular flavor XP I could take midi files produced by another program and if NWC didn't recognize them I could change the extension to mid and all was well.
Now I can't seem to find a way to change the extension and none of my midi files are importable into NWC.
I get a MCI error message too.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Jay
