It worked—Thanks so much!

I've been using NWC for almost 30 years, and don’t recall ever setting that option before. Or even being aware of the option, for that matter.

Did option setting behavior change recently? I’m wondering what else may have changed that I’m unaware of.

I recently upgraded to Windows 11 on a new machine, and re-installed Noteworthy Composer (NWC), version 2.75a.2 (image below).

NWC now ignores the MIDI file folder I set in the Options dialog (image below): When I try to export an NWC file to MIDI format, NWC brings up the NWC file folder, instead of the specified MIDI file folder. Note: The NWC file folder and MIDI file folder are siblings in my folder tree (File Explorer image below).

Is this a true bug, or am I doing something wrong?

General Discussion / Persistent Tools Not Working as Expected under Windows 11
I just upgraded to Windows 11 on a new computer, and find that NWC persistent tools don't work as they used to. Specifically, I used to be able to make "dots" persistent, but not now. Dotted notes don’t even appear on the persistent tools dialog.

Did this functionality move somewhere else? If not, can we put it back in the persistent tools dialog?

This is the absolutely *worst* NWC change I've seen in 20 years. My productivity has slowed down to a crawl, and it's enough to make me seriously consider moving to Muse Score.

Please tell me you're going to restore dots to the persistent tools. If they aren't restored, I will no longer recommend Noteworthy Composer.

You were right! All I had to do was change the corresponding MPC in the base clef, and it works perfectly now.

Actually, one of the reasons I wanted to pursue this was so I could learn about MPC’s & make better use of them in the future.

General Discussion / Re: Exported MIDI Malformed
Ok, I changed the first two time offsets to 0 and 3, but the exported MIDI file seems to be the same. Maybe the problem is that I need to specify when the volume change ends? I read the NWC help file several times, but don't see how that’s done.

Adding to my confusion is that the NWC help file for the Multi-point Controller topic is outdated: It refers to fields that don’t appear in the MPC dialog, such as TimeOffsetMultipler & Linear Sweep Contour. And the dialog has a field that isn’t mentioned in the help file (Time Resolution).  I have NWC version 2.75a.2.

So I’m groping in the dark by trial & error.

Do you see anything wrong with the MPC definition now?

General Discussion / Exported MIDI Malformed
We’ve just encountered a problem we’ve never seen before in the many years we’ve used Noteworthy.

When we export a MIDI file from the attached NWC file (SleepMyLittleOneSleep.nwc), the resulting MIDI has two problems:

1. The MIDI file is twice as long as the original NWC file.

2. The second half of the MIDI is silent (no audio).


I assume something’s wrong with the NWC file, but its appearance and playback seem completely normal.

This is a huge show stopper for us. Can anyone tell what’s wrong?

Thanks for the quick turnaround! But this raises more questions.

  • How did you achieve that effect? I understand what layering is, but I don’t find a way to “unlayer” the now-combined staffs.

  • How can I push the top slur up so it doesn’t cross the note stems? I tried inserting an object, but it had no effect (I guess because it was inserted on the wrong staff?)

General Discussion / Ties Obscuring Notes
The ties in the attached score (measures 3 & 7) are overlaying and obscuring notes, making the score difficult to read.

I think it’s due to the rest chords, but I haven’t found a way to make the ties go down instead of up, or to make them arch higher/lower so they don’t obscure the notes.

Is there any way to prevent these ties from obscuring the notes?

(I already posed this question to NoteWorthy Support, but got no reply).

General Discussion / Staff Spacing Problem
I’ve encountered a problem with staff spacing that I’ve not seen before.

The attached score has an introduction (without lyrics) that needs much less inter-staff spacing than measures which have lyrics.

I was able to adjust the spacing so the printout looks acceptable, but in the edit mode it’s impossible to read. I came up with a workaround of temporarily adding extra spacing while editing, then removing the extra spacing before printing. But it’s incredibly awkward.

Is there a way in NWC to make the spacing look acceptable in both editing and printing modes without resorting to workarounds? Or is this just a limitation we have to accept in a non-WYSIWYG application?

For NoteWorthy Software: I don’t see a mention of the top staff being required in the help documentation. Did I miss it?

If it’s not in the documentation, seems like this is a key point that should be added.

General Discussion / Collapsible Staff Doesn't Work Correctly
I’ve spent several hours trying to collapse a staff (going from 3 staves to 2), without success.

I read the help file and examples, but still can’t make it work. I’ve sent three e-mails to the NWC support address, but have received no replies.

The score is attached. The boundary in question is at the end of the top staff. It collapses the top staff, but it also collapses the other staffs!

What am I doing wrong?

Interesting! I've used NWC for over 20 years, but never knew that functionality was there.

I see it in the online help (now that I know to look under Markers), but I don't find it in the PDF user guide. Oh well, something for the next user guide edition.

Is there a way to explicitly state that we want a triplet marker above (or below) the notes?

Most of the time NWC does a satisfactory job of picking the vertical offset for triplet markers. Occasionally, though, the marker overlays the lyrics, and I have to drastically increase the lyric offset, which introduces a lot of wasteful white space.

The attached score illustrates this issue.

General Discussion / Chord Fonts
I need to add guitar chords to an SATB score, but the only solutions I've found require using additional fonts that don't come with NWC. Unfortunately (unless I'm missing something), I can only use one font for staff metrics, so there's no easy way achieve WYSIWYG appearance in the NWC editor when I have to mix, for example, Times New Roman with a special music font.

My other concern is that, though there seem to be free music fonts available for download, my concern is whether other people to whom I give NWC files have to download the special music fonts separately.  Are "external" fonts automatically included in the resulting NWC file, or do I have to tell my visitors to download music fonts on their own? Telling thousands of Web site visitors to download additional fonts is not a practical solution.

Perhaps my techniques are dated, but the fact that such a common feature (guitar chords) is so fraught with difficulty seems to be a serious deficiency in the software, & makes me difficult for me  to recommend the current version of NoteWorthy Composer to others.

General Discussion / Batch Export to Text
I have 10,000 or so NWC files I'd like to search for various strings (e.g., obsolete copyright notices, Web site URLs etc). I can't search the files directly because they're in some proprietary binary format (zipped?)

I was thinking of using NWCTXT, but don't find a way export files in bulk, just one at a time. I found a very old reference to the NWCINFO program, but that doesn't seem to be available any more.

Does anyone know of a utility to export an entire directory tree of NWC files to text with a single command?

General Discussion / Lyric Syllables Extend Past Bar Lines
After updating to NWC version 2.51a, I notice the last lyric syllable in a measure now extends beyond the bar line. In other words, the bar line's horizontal position is before the end of the last lyric syllable in the measure. This is especially noticeable when the refrain starts, when the other lyrics extend into the refrain area, creating a very unprofessional appearance, especially in the printed score. I know I can prefix the refrain lyrics with underscores, but then the start of the refrain lyrics is no longer left aligned with the first note of the refrain.

Perhaps this is not new behavior, but I don't remember seeing it before. Is there something I'm missing here? I didn't see anything on bar line properties that would cause this. Is this a new bug?

General Discussion / Re: MusicXML to Noteworthy converter
From what I read in this thread, only an online version of the converter is available. I'd like to investigate it, but unfortunately have a very large number of files (approaching 10,000). Is there an automated way to convert files en masse? Converting individual files one-by would take impossibly long, I'm afraid.

General Discussion / Marching Through Georgia
Does anyone have an SATB arrangement of Marching Through Georgia, written by Henry Clay Work in 1865? I found a Gospel song by Mark Trafton (1810-1901) that uses the music (with different words) & wanted to put it on line, but can't find the music (already checked the Scriptorium). The only copies I've found on the Internet have just the melody, or just the cover page for the score.

I don't need necessarily need NWC format (though that would be great!); even a PDF or scanned image would do.  Would appreciate any help!

After some more digging, I found that some of the fonts supplied with Windows 7 do support both alphanumeric characters & sharps/flats. However, NWC doesn't render them correctly.

For example, on my test score, I go into Page Setup & set the User 1 font to DejaVu Serif Condensed Bold. Then I insert the text "Sib" (where b is the flat character, copied via the cilpboard from the Windows CharMap utility. At first, the flat character appears correctly in the dialog. But when I close the dialog, the flat character appears as a question mark in the score, as if the font I specified is being ignored. Is this an NWC2 bug?

General Discussion / Need Alphabetic/Musical font
I searched the community "font" threads, but didn't see any addressing the specific issue I'm facing.

I'm trying to enter scores from a Spanish language hymnal that contain what I assume are chord markings above the treble clef. For example, it has things like "Reb" and "Mib7" (where 'b' is a flat character). My problem is I can't find a font which contains both sharps/flats & letters/numbers. Surprisingly, the Times New Roman font that comes with Windows contains a sharp character (Unicode 266f), but not a flat (Unicode 266d) (at least, not that I can find). And the NWC2STDA font that NWC uses doesn't have letters.

In other words, I can't find a single font to accurately render this type of score. Anyone have any ideas?

I presume there will be applications that convert MIDI to and from MusicXML.  If not, I'll write one, just as soon as I've written the improved MIDI-to-NWC application I started two years ago (in other words, the next time you see a flying pig!)

General Discussion / Windows 7 - Dot Tool
I just set up NWC2 on a Windows 7 machine. Though in general it runs just fine, I've noticed at least one oddity. When I press the period key, instead of toggling the "Dot" toolbar button, it now cycles through the "Dot," "Double Dot" and "no dots." It worked fine (i.e., toggled the "Dot" button on & off) in Windows XP, so I'm guessing it's due to a new keyboard driver. Has anyone else noticed this behavior, or know of a fix?

General Discussion / Re: What happened to CyberHymnal?
We are sad to report that our domain name has been hacked. We are trying to reach our Web hosting company (Word.net) to fix the problem, but so far they have been unresponsive, despite numerous phone calls, pages, and e-mails. The WHOIS registration shows the domain name was changed late yesterday. Please pray for us.

We can still be reached by our normal e-mail, cyberhymnal@hotmail.com. But until the Web hosting service fixes the problem, there is little or nothing we can do.

General Discussion / Re: Bug in Audit Accidentals?
I don't have any problem being prompted to save work, when there's actually something to save. But asking just because there "might" be something to save is evidence of poor design. The application knows (or should know) whether there's something to save, and shouldn't bother the user with pointless questions. Besides, with a large score, it can be difficult to tell if anything really has changed, so I usually answer "yes" to be safe; if I saved a file that didn't need saving, I use unecessary bandwidth & time uploading an unchanged file to our Web site.
