General Discussion / Re: Problem with online object sync.
The ssl cert has not been changed, but the api server was upgraded in the last 30 days. It would not be surprising if XP has issue with something new around openssh or apache config. We will look into it.

User Tools / Re: Colouring Tools
Another idea....though manual, not a user tool

Color a certain note for all instances on a staff (notehead and stem)

Select the note
Edit: Find (Ctrl+F) to show the text representation of note
Ctrl+C to copy the text representation
Press Esc
Place insertion point at the start of staff
Press Shift+End to select entire staff
Go to Edit: Filtered Properties (Ctrl+F3)
Ctrl+V to paste into field
Click Next, under Visibility tab, set item color to "whatever color"
Click OK
Those notes will be "whatever color"

Tips & Tricks / Printing Multiple Songs on a Page
Although you cannot print multiple songs on one page automatically, you can create the effect using the Force System Break option (in Insert | Bar Line (Decorated)). By using extra vertical space above the top staff and below the bottom staff, combined with a Force System Break, you can create the effect of multiple songs on a page. This sample (1K) demonstrates this technique. Title and author info are added with Insert: Text.

Tips & Tricks / Numbering Lyric Lines
There is not a feature in NWC to automatically number the lyric lines. However, you can manually number each lyric line. In Edit: Lyrics, type "1._Firstword" You will see on the staff "1. Firstword" The number 1 will appear under the first note. To adjust this, select the first note, press Alt+Enter, under the Notes tab, increase Extra Note Spacing to 2. This will place the note over Firstword instead of 1.

Tips & Tricks / Aligning Last System When Using System Breaks
If you are using System Breaks to put the same number of measures per system, you may find the last system does not have spacing like the other systems. To make it the same, at the end of the song, insert a single bar line (Insert: Bar Line Decorated) and check Force System Break.

Tips & Tricks / Blank Staff Paper
With the ability to hide items such as notes, rests, bar lines, etc. and the ability to force line breaks, you can create blank staff paper. The file staffppr.nwc (1K) is an example for 8.5 x 11 inch paper. You can use the idea to create staff paper in the size that you want or to create one blank staff below a staff of music.

Tips & Tricks / Working with Repeats, Flow Directions and Special Endings
The functionality of Repeats, Flow Directions and Special Endings are covered in detail in the NoteWorthy Composer Help File, examples are shown in the User's Guide and the 4 sample song files repeatx.nwc (where x=1-4) in NWC allow you to follow the flow by  playing back the files. Go to File: Info for each file for an explanation of what is being illustrated. All of these resources should provide a good understanding of how these features work.

An additional tip when working on the flow of a song is to break the song into blocks. These blocks are individual sections that may or may not be played more than once, but they can be separated. Then give each block a name, like A, B, C, etc. Then write out the flow of the song, using the block names. For example, your song may flow ABACDAC. From that, figure out how to implement Repeats, Flow Directions and Special Endings in your song. This will help you see at a higher level without all the measures of notes clouding your view.

Tips & Tricks / Metronome
If you want to set up a basic metronome to click the beat while you practice your instrument, just create a *.nwc song file to do the job.

The file metronom.nwc (1K) is an example of a simple beat metronome with the sound of a Side Stick from the MIDI Drum list. You may want to select a Hand Clap for the sound, if that reminds you of your teacher sitting beside you clapping out the beat. To change the tempo, simply select the tempo and press Alt+Enter to edit it.

You may want to create your own collection of metronomes, from simple to more elaborate like the rhythm templates in NoteWorthy Composer. Remember to set the Channel of the staff (Staff: Staff Properties, MIDI) to 10 or 16 for your drum channel. See the file drumref.nwc in NoteWorthy Composer for more examples of sounds and how the drum channel works.

Tips & Tricks / Printing a Song with Varying Number of Staves / Printing One Song After Another
In a *.nwc song file, there must be the same number of staves throughout the entire song. For example, if you want to print a song with 3 staves, then  2 staves, and then 3 staves at the end, this is not possible in one song file. However, to print a song that has varying number of staves in the song, there is a work around:

  • Create each group of staves in different *.nwc song file (Ex: song file for 3 staves, song file for 2 staves, song file for 3 staves)
  • Use File: Print Preview Copy to copy the first section (first *.nwc song file)
  • Paste (Ctrl+V) into another application like a word processor
  • Use File: Print Preview Copy to copy the next section (next *.nwc song file)
  • Paste (Ctrl+V) into other application after the first section
  • Repeat as many times as needed
This is a work around and will take some trial and error to get the look you want. It will not be perfect, as there will be final bar lines in the middle of the song print, etc. You will not want to print the Title Info (File: Page Setup, Options) and will need to decrease the margins and staff size (ex: margins - 2,2,2,5 and staff size -12).

You can also use this procedure to print one song after another.

Tips & Tricks / Print Group and Play Group
Using Groups and creating symbols with Insert: Text has been covered in several individual tips, but it may be helpful to sum up the ideas.

It is possible to create text symbols with Insert: Text like tr~~~~ for trill or { for arpeggiating chords. It is also possible to notate how a trill or an arpeggiating chord would play back.

Using groups in NoteWorthy Composer, you can create a Print/Display Group using Insert: Text for the symbols. Then create a Play Group where you notate the symbols. A staff is placed in a Group with Staff: Staff Properties, General tab, Group. Use File: Page Setup, Contents to select the staves to display and the staves to print.

The sample song file moonlite.nwc is a good example of using a Print Group and a Play Group.

Have ever wanted to print your score from NoteWorthy Composer onto a page in landscape view with 2 small pages of music side by side? The trick is a neat software package called ClickBook. It will help you create one page or an entire booklet of your music.
