General Discussion / Re: Complicated rhythms
Yes and NWC2 handles this with ease.
Fire up your PIANO Template, set User 1 to NWC2STDA, Font size = <staff size> or set staff size to 18pt.
Paste the first clip into the Upper Grand Staff, and the second into the Lower Grand Staff.

General Discussion / Re: Section Close - Section Open Printing Problem
Maybe this will work for you.
Use the last variation (with the tied grace notes) if you can't tolerate a 32nd note pause (unlikely to be a problem here);
Just be careful "auditing" accidentals with the invisible notes.  Or you can use a tempo mpc to compensate.

This is all perfectly logical, IOW, not a bug turned into a feature, but I'll spare you the explanation.
I posted the same thing to the newsgroup awhile back (using a master repeat open instead of a Section Open). The only comment  I got was: "Why would anyone want to do that?"

ahem ....

General Discussion / Re: Complicated rhythms
David, this must be my day for being misunderstood.

Nowhere in my post did I imply that the two clips were to be placed on opposing staves.

My comments: "Conceptually, I think this is easier." and "Musically, this is close ..." would seem to imply quite the opposite.
3405
General Discussion / Re: Hidden note display anomaly in Preview 1x
There are no x-heads in my clips.

One of the purposes of XNoteSpace is to align stems of notes sounding together but with opposing stem direction.

An invisible note at the beginning of a beam  determines where the beam starts. In order to use beams from one staff and notes from another, it is important that XNoteSpace not be ignored on invisible notes.

It would be like muting all invisible notes and saying "Well, if you can't see it, why would you want to hear it?"

It is also inconsistent.

Patient: It hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Then don't do that.

General Discussion / Hidden note display anomaly in Preview 1x
If I add XNoteSpace to a Visibility:Never note it shifts the note in my work view, but not in print preview.
This has ramifications when I try to attach things to hidden notes.

Put each clip on its own staff. Note the difference in bar 2

General Discussion / Re: Bar numbers not coinciding with the music
When you check "force system break" a whole lot of options should be made available. "Measure #" from Page Setup  and just about everything from Properties for <staff>.

Another way to implement this would be a check box for bar line: Measure start that defaults to "checked"

"accidental scheme" would be a good addition to Page Setup
The ability to confine Audit Accidentals to a selection would help.
3410
General Discussion / Re: numbering lyrics lines
This is a better question for the newsgroup where we can post samples. You should be able to find info on how to access the newsgroups on the site map.

Best solution I have found is somewhat complicated.

1) put a quarter grace note where you want the number.
make it the same pitch as the next note. tie it, make it Lyrics=Always, Visibility=Never

2) put the verse # at the beginning each lyric line followed by a space. If you have fewer than 10 verses, the numbers should all line up vertically under the grace note.
3411
General Discussion / Re: Exporting files
Look in your windows folder for mplayer.exe

Try it. I've found that the graphics overhead from the fancy players gets in the way of the sound.

It is also the easiest way to mark a short passage and loop it.
3414
General Discussion / Re: Preview 1w Shift+Ctrl+Home buglet
Further testing indicates:
Ctrl+Home works the same as Shift+Ctrl+Home

Ctrl+Home does not handle a selection properly.

If on the top staff and the cursor is not at position 0
Ctrl+Home will move it to position 0

Contrast this with:
PgUp, Ctrl+PgUp, Shift+PgUp, and Shift+Ctrl+PgUp
which are all properly ignored when pressed while on the top staff.
3415
General Discussion / Preview 1w Shift+Ctrl+Home buglet
Although not in the Keyboard Guide, Shift+Ctrl+Home moves to the current horizontal position on the topmost visible staff. If already on the topmost staff, it just vertically homes the cursor.

But, if there is a selection, highlighting is not canceled. F9 or toggling layering fixes the display.
3416
General Discussion / Re: Skipping bars in the second repeat
Has anyone experimented with the use of codas and segnos to achieve this?

I can't see why anyone would want to. It seems to me that Da Capo, Segno, Coda, and Fine are just variations of Master Repeat Open, Special Ending, and Master Repeat Close.

IOW, I think that anything that doesn't involve playing a measure more than 8 times can be achieved with just Master Repeat Open, Special Ending, and Master Repeat Close.

It would help if NWC didn't become stupid when it hits a double bar.
3418
General Discussion / Re: Forum navigation glitch?
It seems to act very predictably now.
If I click in a user message, the cursor keys are ignored.
To select any text in a message, I must use the mouse.

Pressing Tab key,  clicking on the top or bottom of the page, or clicking on any blue bar  cancels the effect.
I would say that this is quite acceptable.
3419
General Discussion / Re: Layering Request
And having an active selection shouldn't matter!
I select the area of concern, because I want to move it up or down and then try to toggle layering to see exactly how much, but nooooo...

Edit: This was fixed long ago. Toggling layering no longer affects the selection.
3420
General Discussion / Re: Printing email graphics
The solution is for the recipient to configure his machine for what he wants to receive and be satisfied with the consequences.

Sorry Rob, but if a user has his security set to exclude jpegs, the solution should decidedly not be for the sender to try to fool security.

Word costs several hundred $USD. I don't have it. I would guess that most "home" users that have it, have an illegal copy.  Same for WordPerfect, Excel, PowerPoint...

Too many senders assume that the recipient will have all the software that the sender has. bad assumption

That said, I can usually get what I need. It is amazing what I can extract using WordView and a Hex editor.
3422
General Discussion / Re: Forum navigation glitch?
I'm having problems as well. Sometimes works, sometimes not. Sometimes I have to click on the page to get them to work. I have noticed that when I have to click, tapping the Alt key twice really messes things up. I have to navigate away, then back. Even refreshing the page won't work.

I'm hoping this just goes away...
3423
General Discussion / Re: How to put chord symbols on a lead sheet?
The problem chord symbols as lyrics is that I am seldom satisfied with having them all in the same vertical position.

Best solution I have found is to put them on their own layered staff attached to invisible rests (but don't use whole rests). When I am satisfied with the rest of my work, I put hard line breaks in. Then I move the chord symbols a line at a time just high enough to clear the notation. When they are on their own staff with just rests, I can select them as a group and adjust them with the cursor keys.

Now if I could layer/unlayer with a hot-key or while I have something selected grr....
3425
General Discussion / Re: wish list entry re hairpins
When I see a crescendo over a sustained note  I raise the piano lid with my free hand. I figure that that must be what the composer had in mind. When the composer is Debussy, I might actually be right.
3427
General Discussion / Re: Octave change indicator
The clef problem is solved in NWC2. Instead of a clef, you insert an instrument patch with transposition +12 and uncheck Send Patch. If you don't mind 8va in Staff Bold, you can even add it as the instrument name.
3428
General Discussion / Re: tie & slur
Legato is useful for a host of things. To simulate staccato, tenuto, precede the passage with legato, make the notes staccato, center a text underscore (of the proper font, size, and position) on each note. Add semplice at the end to cancel the legato. You will want to make legato and  semplice invisible.
3429
General Discussion / Re: Breve idea
Losing the zero as a home key has scripting issues. I don't use recorder macros anymore, but I remember using zero as a reference.

Can anyone post an example that can't be easily worked around by using text breves attached to white rests and a separate playing staff?
3430
General Discussion / Re: fit to page
https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=1498.msg33861#msg33861 there is this last bar that is orphaned on page 5

Usually, the last bar is a whole note (or chord). Try making it a RestChord with an eighth rest. Experiment with the rest position until it is well above or below the staff and then use a little "digital white-out" to obliterate the rest. Then use some text spaces centered at next note/bar and preserve width to make the measure as wide as you like.  This works with any whole note measure and can often shorten a song to save a page.  The rests do not affect playback or midi export.

To save even more space, tie an invisible grace note with accidentals to you visible note. Then add the accidental(s) as text. In a measure with lots of notes this often is the difference between getting 1 measure on a line (ugh!) and 2.  This will also make the accidental "persistent", i.e., impervious to audit accidentals, but wrong if you transpose staff.

If you would like some examples, I can post some either to the NWC2 forum or the newsgroup.

HTH
3433
General Discussion / Re: Problem with rest and note in a chord
You can't. Musically, it is never necessary. For appearance, you can use NoteWorthy's NWCV15.FNT as a user font and add them as text. Set the font size to about 133% of the staff font. e.g. Staff Size:18 -> User Font:24
Rests are represented by the letters l, m, n, o, p, q, and r.

A better and more straightforward approach is to use layers, especially for choral music.
See the sample file: layering.nwc

Note: NWC2 will allow rests and notes of the same duration, but rests longer than notes are still not permitted.
3434
General Discussion / Re: direction of beams (not stems)
clare: If you would post some of the "scale and bowing patterns, rhythms, and exercises" that are problematic, to the newsgroup, some of us might take a wack at them.

I'm with you on the gravity of this bug.  NoteWorthy doesn't purport to do everything, but what it does purport to do, it usually does accurately.
3435
General Discussion / Re: Beam Highlight color
If you put your notes on a grey staff and layer it with a normal staff with hidden rests, I think you will get the effect you are looking for.

I could post an example in the newsgroup if you can access it.

General Discussion / Re: direction of beams (not stems)
Amazing that such a major bug should be uncovered 20 months after v1.75b is released.  I guess this is why we need teachers. To teach the basics, they need to understand them better than the rest of us.

NWC2 has the same behaviour and it cannot always be worked around even with layers, invisible notes and varied stem lengths.  IMO, this needs to be fixed before the release of the NWC2 beta.
3439
General Discussion / Re: Volume and stereo pan combinations
I doubt there is any standard. Rock and roll seems to eschew them.

You might search the internet, or go to your local record store, and look at album covers to see how bands arrange themselves. IIRC, keyboards  seem to be on the left edge, bass on the right, drums in the center, with the lead guitar roaming across the front.

HTH

Note to Eric: you might want to add internet to your dictionary.

Re: https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=5191.msg33205#msg33205  You seem to be right. I can't get an html file to load.

Under XP and Win98 I can get a text file to display with a command: notepad foo.txt but ...
[path]\iexplore foo.htm just hangs NWC2. Once I terminate NWC2 with the task manager (aka Ctrl+Alt+Del->End Task), the web page displays.

Under Win98 I can use start foo.txt, or start Scripts\foo.vbs but start foo.htm hangs NWC2 as above.
Under XP, start seems always to display STDERR with "command process failed". There are a lot of new switches with XP's start command, maybe I need one or more of them.

I thought this may be a memory issue, but with Win98, start foo.pdf works and, in my experience, Acrobat is at least as big a memory hog as IExplore.

All attempts to use VBScript's Run command gave the same result as start. There are some other ways to load web pages with VBScript, so a solution may yet exist.

General Discussion / Re: VBScript User Tools cause NWC2 to leave temporary files.
Sorry, my example had an error. Should have started:

'---- begin ToNotePad.vbs ---------------
Option Explicit
Dim fso: Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

-----------------------------------------
To Peter:
You can run hta's and html's directly as a user tool.
html probably would not have enough access to do more than display some help.

To get the context you want, you would have to mark the part you wanted the tool to work on (perhaps with some distinctive text) and the send the entire staff.

VBScript will let you access the registry and and the clipboard, something I suspect cannot be done with PHP.

Re: #1
Patient: It hurts when I do this.
Doctor:  well, stop doing it.

I'm not sure what is locking files. That's why I asked about PHP.
Spawning is a large part of scripting. Would be a shame to have it limited.

Re: #2
stdout and stderr display are not much use as they lock the program. If I just wanted to see it, I'd use the Clipboard viewer.

This was as short an example as I had. Some uses:

If I have a measure of music that does not sound right, I highlight it and send it to notepad.  It's like seeing all the properties at once.

Some music is quite repetitive. I put that in notepad, sometimes with comments, and copy/paste from there. Much faster than jumping around the song file.

I have longer scripts. One uses IrfanView to send the current page to the default printer, another sends all pages to a mult-page tif.

General Discussion / VBScript User Tools cause NWC2 to leave temporary files.
This does not seem to be a problem with WinXP

Under Win98SE, any time a User Tool is run, NWC2 creates 3 files in windows\temp in the form of nwt*.TMP.  They are the STDIN, STDOUT, and STDERR.  Usually these are deleted when the User Tool finishes, but if the tool "spawns" any processes, they are locked until the spawned process finishes and are never deleted. Here's a simple example:

'---- begin ToNotePad.vbs ---------------
Option Explicit
Dim fso: fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Dim f: f = fso.GetBaseName(fso.GetTempName) & ".txt"
f = fso.BuildPath(fso.GetSpecialFolder(2), f) ' 2 = %TEMP%
fso.CreateTextFile(f).Write(WScript.StdIn.Read(46080))
CreateObject("WScript.Shell").Run(f) ' leaves %TEMP%\nwt*.TMP
WScript.Sleep 500: fso.DeleteFile(f)
If WScript.StdIn.AtEndOfStream Then WScript.Quit
MsgBox "Truncated to 45K bytes", vbExclamation, "Warning"
'---- end ToNotePad.vbs ---------------

The offending line is:
CreateObject("WScript.Shell").Run(f)
which runs notepad and loads the file. The temp files are locked until notepad is closed and never deleted.

I can't figure out how to avoid it. I can solve it with an onExit routine that deletes all the files it can that match the pattern, but if it can be fixed within NWC2, that would certainly be preferable.

I know nothing of PHP (and since I have failed at every attempt to become adept at "regular expressions", I'm not eager to learn.)

Can PHP "spawn processes"? (It may be called "exec" or "shell".)  If so, does it leave the temp files?
Anyone have any ideas on the best way to handle this?

General Discussion / Re: Print Preview Aliasing
Try an Okidata ML 192.
288x144 (not very useful)
144x144 quite nice, comes close to matching 300x300dpi
72x72  a page fits nicely in a screen.

I remember this printer. ML stands for "MicroLine" It is a dot matrix printer that is only ~3" high (x8x10).

Hope this helps.
