General Discussion / Re: Not really NWC, but on music theroy
Now that we have a bass line...
I changed the b-nat to a c-flat. Seems more readable to me.
A c-nat in measure 2 would seem more than a "courtesy".

If you don't consider the top line a melody, I would think measures 1-2 best.
But I just see this as a chromatic descent with one chord change as in measures 3-4.

General Discussion / Re: taping pages together
I've been playing piano (organs and various keyboards) for 41 years.  In that time I have been able to memorize exactly zero songs, nor can I memorize poetry of any length. Yet, I  get paid to play several dozen times a year. To say that I am fussy about the presentational aspects of music would be a gross understatement. That said, this is what has worked for me over the last 5 years or so joining pages of music:

1) Get a pack of standard envelope labels. 2 1/2" x 15/16" or so.  Make sure the pack says non-removable.  Removable ones don't work at all.

2) Use a paper cutter to cut these down to 1/2" x 15/16", discarding 1/4" (the rounded part) from each end. You should get 4 "joiners" from each label.

3) Put the pages to be joined on a large, flat surface. Put one joiner (long dimension up/down) dead center. Put one about 1" from the bottom, one about 1" from the top. Burnish them down with your fingernail and fold along the joint.

I put my joiners on the front so I can see if any are coming loose or tearing, but the back is good if you plan to copy them on to 11"x17".

It is quite rare to have a tear or loosening.

Another tip I would give you is to use 28# paper for music that fits on one page and 24# paper for the rest.  Costs just a bit more, but it is so much easier to find a piece of music in a large stack.

Good luck,

General Discussion / Re: New slur font
Re: https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=4785.msg31553#msg31553 Here's a workaround with a layer. It uses a headless whole note to anchor in. A white rest would do as well. An invisible rest works fine as an anchor at the end of the line, but not the beginning as it renders the slur invisible.

Try this on an 18pt staff with no xspace, vertical size of 22/12 and 1/2" page margins. Layer this:

General Discussion / Re: Measure numbers
I was able to duplicate this situation exactly using viewer 2.0, Public release 1.1. The problem is still there in 1.6. Worse, if you happen to have a system break on measure 5, 10 15, .... you get measure numbers at both the end of the line and the start of the next.

Best fix is to put in explicit line breaks and use Staff Bold, Staff position 9, no preserve width, right, anything but at next note or bar. The text will be the measure number and about 11 spaces. If you need finer control, try center and about 22 spaces.

But if you value your time at more than the minimum wage, you might consider spending $30 and join the club.

General Discussion / Re: New slur font
If you are referring to the slur in measure 7, I don't find it all that bad, but I couldn't come up with any tricks to change it.

Try this on an 18pt staff with no xspace, vertical size of 22/12 and 1/2" page margins.

Worst problem I see is the funny tilt to the triplet bar in measure 9.
I put discrete page breaks in. You may need to adjust margins a bit to see what I am seeing.
Note that this is not how I would normally add space between notes. For this piece I would use a layer and "white rests", but that would make the example much more complex.

Plays pretty well too.

General Discussion / Re: grace notes and duration
You can slow them down by tying several of them together and making all but the last one invisible. If you are using NWC2, ask over there and I will post some examples.

A Tempo mpc can speed them up. Properly done it can make them appear to sound before the beat, but this is usually more trouble than a separate "play" staff.

Underscore and ALT+0234 for an 8vb is passable but not great.

Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Pedal markings
David has good advice. A couple of things you should know about NWC2's implementation:

1) Pedal up|down applies to the midi channel, not just to the staff. If you make both the upper and lower grand staves say, channel 3, the pedal points on you put on the lower staff apply to the upper one. Try changing to a cello to hear this clearly.

2) Two pedal downs do NOT make a pedal up! It is common to see a pedal down, then another pedal down, without a pedal up. The pedal up is implied. Not so with NWC2. You must put in a pedal up (it can be invisible). Make sure there is a pedal up at the logical end of the piece or you will get the dreaded "stuck notes".

As to you other questions:
The left pedal on a piano is usually called the "soft pedal".
This is accurate enough for most pianos. Some lower a strip of felt between the hammers and the strings. Others move the entire hammer mechanism closer to the strings. A good piano will shift the entire keyboard about 1/8" (usually to the left). You can see and feel it move. On this type of piano, "soft pedal" is a misnomer. "Una corde pedal" is correct. The upper keys normally hit 3 strings. Shifting the keyboard causes the hammer to hit only one, hence "una corde" (Italian for "one string"). This produces both a softer and "thinner" sound.

The usual marking for this is una corde or una córde in Staff Italics below the lower Grand Staff. The "pedal up" indication is: tre corde (Italian for "three strings"). Like the damper pedal up, tre corde is often implied. Any increase in dynamics means a release unless an explicit release is noted. Debussy wrote a piece calling for una corde even in sections marked forte.

The center pedal is usually called the "sostenuto pedal". Some pianos don't have it. On others it does nothing! On my piano, it lifts all the dampers from great C down. On a good piano, it sustains just the notes that are down when it it depressed. Any notes played after are normally dampened. This is no standard notation for this.  Sometimes it's use is indicated in a footnote. Debussy's "Claire de Lune"  and Rachmaninoff's "C# minor prelude" clearly need it, but there is no indication in the music. Here's an example from Elgar:

You just can't do it without a sostenuto pedal!
In this case it would be pressed just after the 8th rest in measure 73 and released at beat 2 of the next measure.  Midi-wise, you have no problem; the computer doesn't care how far the notes are from each other.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but ...

General Discussion / Re: Privacy concern?
I'd say this is the price you pay for being a beta tester ( and well worth it, considering that it has solved about half my formatting problems!)

Still it is annoying. This is my 3rd launch of NWC2 today and this time it took about 5 seconds to access the website.  But it's a lot better than having to put my v1.75b disk in and enter my Authenticity ID like I had to for 2.0a - e.

General Discussion / Re: Stuck notes
You are correct. For a BIG score:

Finding stuck notes.

1) Edit->Find...->By Category->Hanging Note Tie
Repeat at beginning of each staff until found.

If not play each staff solo until you find the offending track. Then, one of the following should fix the problem:

2) Play from various endings until you isolate the problem.

3) Put a note at the very end of the track. Select it. Move it up and down with control+shift+up|down. If a tie into this note appears, you found the pitch! Now look for tied notes with this pitch.

<end Finding stuck notes>

Edit->Find...->By Category->Hanging Note Tie (aka Ctrl-F)
won't always work.  Example:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Instrument|Name:"Flute"|Patch:73|Trans:0|DynVel:10,30,45,60,75,92,108,127|Pos:8

|Ending|Endings:1
|Note|Dur:Whole|Pos:0
|Bar|Style:MasterRepeatClose
|Ending|Endings:2
|Note|Dur:Whole|Pos:1
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
This seems trivial but flow on some pieces are non-trivial.
I have seen some pieces where there is a tie into some endings but a slur into others. A quick way to simulate this is:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Instrument|Name:"Flute"|Patch:73|Trans:0|DynVel:10,30,45,60,75,92,108,127|Pos:8

General Discussion / Re: Stuck notes
You get a stuck note if it is tied and the piece ends.

When the piece has complicated flow instructions the fix can be less than obvious.
Clef and key changes can also be a problem. Here's a particularly egregious example:

Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Bass
|Key|Signature:C
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:5^|Opts:Stem=Down
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:b-6
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:#-1^
|Bar
|Key|Signature:Bb
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-1
|Rest|Dur:4th
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:0
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Solution: Play each staff solo until you find the offending track. Then, one of the following should fix the problem:

1) Edit->Find...->By Category->Hanging Note Tie
(aka control+F)

2) Play from various endings until you isolate the problem.

3) Put a note at the very end of the track. Select it. Move it up and down with control+shift+up|down. If a tie into this note appears, you found the pitch! Now look for tied notes with this pitch.

In "midi speak'" a note causes a "note on" followed by a "note off" (or a "note on" with velocity=0) when the note's duration is reached. A tied note causes a note on. The note is not turned off until an untied note of the same pitch is reached.

The example above produces these events:

time event note  velocity
000  On    n=75 v=110
192  On    n=75 v=110
352  On    n=75 v=0
384  On    n=70 v=110
736  On    n=69 v=0
768  On    n=70 v=110
928  On    n=70 v=0

Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Would NWC ever have a WYSIWYG layout?
You may want to explore printing to a virtual printer that prints to a file. I use GhostScript and RedMon for this. Output is a multi-page b&w tiff. Uses about 35k of disk space for each page. Took well over a day to set up, but it has been worth it.

General Discussion / Re: RestChord problem with: &Tools->Audit &Note Stems
I'm using ver 1i.
I guess I was not clear enough. IMO, Audit note stems should not flip a RestChord. I have found a solution. A grace RestChord tied to a note or RestChord will produce the desired display and play properly (except for very short notes)
Example:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|RestChord|Dur:8th,Grace|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:4th|Pos2:-3^|Visibility:Never
|RestChord|Dur:4th|Opts:Stem=Up,ArticulationsOnStem|Dur2:4th|Pos2:-3
|RestChord|Dur:8th,Grace|Opts:Stem=Down|Dur2:4th|Pos2:3^|Visibility:Never
|RestChord|Dur:4th|Opts:Stem=Down,ArticulationsOnStem|Dur2:4th|Pos2:3
|RestChord|Dur:8th,Grace|Opts:Stem=Down|Dur2:4th|Pos2:-3^|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-3|Opts:Stem=Down
|RestChord|Dur:8th,Grace|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:4th|Pos2:3^|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:3|Opts:Stem=Up
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
N. B. the grace rest must be shorter than the attached note(s). This will affect notes thru the duration of the note in the grace RestChord. A bar line will reset to the usual behavior.

This is a complete enough solution for my needs. Thanks to all who have responded.

General Discussion / RestChord problem with: &Tools->Audit &Note Stems
If I enter:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|RestChord|Dur:8th|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:8th|Pos2:-5
|RestChord|Dur:8th|Dur2:8th|Pos2:-5
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
into a blank staff and then invoke: &Tools->Audit &Note Stems
the first note gets flipped up. This only happens when the note has a negative position.

Oddly, if I set the rest position to -2 thru -15, before I add the note, a note stem audit will not flip the note.

Is this a feature or a bug? Please advise.

General Discussion / Re: Trills?
My experience is that wind instruments sound better with pitch bends. Percussion and plucked strings sound better with disrete notes. Bowed strings depend on the effect you want.
