This sounds difficult.  Maybe a little rubato wouldn't hurt...  :P  (I wish I could make a tongue smiley with X eyes)

General Discussion / Re: Just upgraded Noteworthy 2 Beta 2.17 tonight
If you're using one of the older versions, yes, it's one of the Save options, I believe.  I haven't quite figured out how to use 2007 yet.  I absolutely cannot stand not having toolbars and menus, and the in-your-face picture buttons scattered across the top with random tabs is just the worst excuse for application novelty I have ever seen in Microsoft's programs.  Can you believe that there are less features in 2007 than in 2003 and XP?  It's ridiculous!

General Discussion / Re: Playing back MIDI files on a Rodgers i557 organ
If you have a MIDI floppy from the PR-300S that plays on the Rodgers, try reading it on your PC. If you can't, chances are good that your are not going to produce a floppy with your PC that will work. If you can, try copying all the files to your hard drive and then copy them to a blank floppy.

If saving it as a Type 1 file doesn't work, try Type 0.

Couldn't have said it better myself...this is exactly where I would start troubleshooting!

I also suggest you look in the manual, and if there are any samples that you can get offline or from another disk, you might want to try those first, just to make sure you really understand how to do it.

My brother helped me get my Sunrise Remix, Fifth Symphony Tangopolka, and Revolutionary Rap off a floppy onto the keyboard at church so I could play them and see what everyone (the music team) thought of them.  Basically, I think it held eight "places" to store files, and you had to select which of those eight "slots" you wanted to erase to put your new song in.  I don't think it allowed a direct playback from the floppy.

General Discussion / Re: Just upgraded Noteworthy 2 Beta 2.17 tonight
On the topic of changes in the different versions...

I believe this is an operating-system-related change that happened between Windows Me to Windows XP, but it would be neat to put this feature in Noteworthy that we once had:

In Windows Me, you could print to a file, and it could be opened with Microsoft Word to be printed.  This was a handy way to format the sheet music, as well as to email it to fellow musicians, provided the NWCV15.ttf font was also sent with it.  It meant they didn't have to install a piece of software, just the fonts.  I wish I could remember what type of file this was...

Anyway, I'd like to see Noteworthy incorporate this into the version 2.  It was originally part of the Windows OS, (I believe it was simply called "Print to File") and was changed to print to Microsoft Office Document Image Writer and XPS Document Image Writer (or something like that).

General Discussion / Re: Playing back MIDI files on a Rodgers i557 organ
For those of us who aren't familiar with this keyboard, could you explain how far you've come?

For example, have you transferred the music via floppy or other device already where it is waiting to be played on the keyboard?

Can you see the song on the keyboard?

Are you able to attempt to play it but just aren't happy with it due to distortion or possibly no playback sound?

General Discussion / Re: Workflow recommendations?
Yes, I've tried reading manuscripts of W. A. Mozart and Chip Davis (the new age electric orchestral composer/director for Mannheim Steamroller)...it's not easy.  Mozart's notes are all curvy and stuff, like he forgot to put them in and fixed them later, and Chip's music is just plain sloppy.

General Discussion / Re: getting ride of title space
In Windows Me or lower, you should be able to hit the print option in the File menu, and select Print to File.  From there, it will save it (you may need to search your computer later to find the most recent files, but pay attention to where you save it).

In Windows XP and later, select either the XPS or Office Document image writer (I don't have a preference, since neither mean anything to me).  Office Document = .tif and XPS = .xps

I've not worked yet with XP and Vista for this procedure yet, so I'm not sure how well it works.  I grew up using the early versions of Windows and just switched to Vista here at home, and haven't needed to send someone a song since the upgrade.

Hope this is helpful.

General Discussion / Re: 2007 Software Review Notation Pragrams
lol....apparently it's pretty easy to misrepresent something...

I wonder if they're getting all these emails and thinking, "Oh, look!  More junk mail!  Don't tell the boss...he's already in a crummy mood today."

Makes you think...are they even looking at these and redirecting them to the appropriate people?

Just a thought...  By the way... They listed five or so email addresses on their site (under Contact Us).  I just picked the first one because I didn't feel like figuring out what they all were.  Just in case someone wants to try a different address...

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
Yesterday I watched a YouTube movie of a 14-year-old girl playing an expert-level piece featuring Spanish-sounding classical music, and one part sounded exactly like a piccolo (although it did come out in tune, making it less piccolo-like).

Here's the link: http://www.violinist.com/media/439/
It's pretty scary that a girl so young can do that.  Just imagine the kind of stuff, though, that she can't do because she's devoted her young life already solely to violin...say maybe sports?

General Discussion / Re: Workflow recommendations?
A silly question - if all you want is paper output, why not just photocopy?

I was wondering the same thing, so I read the original question:

I'm transcribing some arrangements for a friend and I'm only interested in good quality paper output - essentially matching his notation as best possible.

Apparantly he's transposing to another key, or sticking it on a different clef.  That wouldn't be very easy to do with a copy machine.

They should invent a copy machine that transposes your sheet music for you.

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
I think it's all a conspiracy...it is Vista, but it's not the limitations of Vista.

Here's how it works.

You have just bought a nice computer.  12 months ago, that is.  It's great.  Top-of-the-line.  And even the sound card has that perfect timbre for every instrument.

Vista comes out.  Everyone is forced to upgrade if they want to use the latest version of anything.

So you buy a new computer.  It's absolutely crappy, but it runs Vista.

The monitor is 15" and has little lines going across it like an old TV (and it's supposed to...not sure why...).  The memory needs upgrading.  Maybe the hard drive is too tiny.  But the sound card...oh, the sound card...it's the worst you've ever heard.

Eventually, people will make a driver for those really good sound cards when their business begins to wish they had a better one that would work in Vista, but for now, everyone can sell cheap sound cards in their computers as long as there's not a better computer out there with Vista.

I felt cheated, too.  I feel your pain.

It's all a whacked out conspiracy.

General Discussion / Re: chord members
Someone (probably Lawrie) has actually made a chord font, I believe, if that's what you're asking about.  You can find it in the Scriptorium.  To use it, first download and install it.  In page setup, set one of the User fonts to the chord font (and remember which number).  Open your character map and copy the chord you want.  In NWC, insert text, using the appropriate number User font, "at next note/bar" centered above the appropriate beat using the character copied from the clipboard.

Now I'll go make sure there's actually such a font...

Okay...http://nwc-scriptorium.org/ftp/helpful/fretqwik400k.zip

But it looks like in this font, you need several characters in that text string to create a chord.  However, this makes it more usable, since it's not limited to a certain set of chords!

General Discussion / Re: getting ride of title space
When I want to do additional formatting (or email sheet music to someone), I print it to a file, which retains such great resolution that an infinite zoom in Microsoft Word will never make the notes look fuzzy.  Although Word is a terrible graphics editor, you could edit your graphics and copy them into Word.  Note that wherever you take your file, even if it's a Word document, you'll need to bring with you and install all the fonts you used, including the staff font NWCV15.ttf.

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
yes, Chunk chunk (metal guitar)

nick mccabe was able to use his guitar to immitate bird songs(using feed back) the creaking of trees and some sounds that really pass beyond comparison. Johnny greenwood has imitated whale songs, jazz trumpets and a rhodes piano. and jimmy hendrix has done every sound concievable

The violin has many voices, too, in addition to the common arco, pizziccato, spiccato, and col legno--
Once I heard a famous violinist play "Listen to the Mockingbird" and he put in a really long complex mockingbird song that sounded really authentic.
Yesterday I watched a YouTube movie of a 14-year-old girl playing an expert-level piece featuring Spanish-sounding classical music, and one part sounded exactly like a piccolo (although it did come out in tune, making it less piccolo-like).
My brother's old orchestra teacher tells a story on her violin about a mouse and an elephant and makes appropriate sound effects.

General Discussion / Re: Breaking a print line in the middle of a measure (bar)
Bob, you may be reprinting the music from time to time.  If so, you may wish to avoid the hassle of renumbering each sheet of music each time.

Use a "conductor" staff with muted headless whole notes, and ordinary bar lines.  Enter bar numbers as text, just before each bar line, justify centre, placed at next bar/note.  Then you just layer that with your music.

Now you can print anytime, or print once to pdf, and make hard copy whenever.

Good point, but it is a lot of effort, and renders the score less editable unless bars are renumbered.  But I see where you're coming from.  I guess I normally print a single time and run copies of it, keeping an original tucked away somewhere safe.

To those responsible for evaluating Noteworthy Composer 1.75b in the Music Notation Software 2007 Review:

Here at the Noteworthy Software Community, we heard about your Music Notation Software Review 2007. In inspecting the stats, we found that Noteworthy Composer had a faulty evaluation.

The primary problems we noticed were as follows:

  • Is hard to use-- While I haven't tried the other notation softwares presented in the survey, I was able to learn how to use Noteworthy within a few minutes. I certainly found it much easier to use than any other notation processor I've seen.  Difficulty is relative, though, so I won't go further here.
  • Has cross staff beaming-- There's no such feature in this program.
  • Has a metronome-- See the above, no such feature.
  • Doesn't have a time display-- Yes it does. It's in the right end of the status bar at the bottom. It shows both the elapsed time and the total time.
  • Doesn't have "Computer Keyboard Note Input"-- Keyboard input is the primary input method. [Enter/Return] = note; [Spacebar] = rest; [arrow keys] = navigate the staff for foolproof accurate note placement(up, down, forward, backward); [Tab] = bar line; [CTRL] = insert a chord member. Also, most mouse-accessible commands are available through easy-to-use keyboard shortcuts.
  • Doesn't have a paper manual-- Yes it does, although it's seldom used.
  • There are no download Patches-- Yes there are. Go to noteworthysoftware.com
  • There are no download Updates-- Same answer here as above.
  • Doesn't support Vista-- Even though it was developed in early versions of Windows, it is supported in ALL versions of Windows, including Vista, running error-free.
  • Doesn't support NT-- Again, it is supported and runs error-free.
  • The software doesn't automatically place the measure bars so you can enter an infinite number of notes on one measure, whereas other programs prevent you from entering notes that exceed the measure's time.-- One of the things we love the most about this notation processor is just about anything in it can be overridden to meet your composing needs. It's important to allow for too many notes in a measure, especially since the software is used to enter classical compositions, many of which contain "too many" beats in some measures. Corelli is a great example of a composer who did this on purpose. For those who REALLY want their bars forced, there's a button that allows you to force bar lines.
  • We found Noteworthy Composer a difficult program to use with a confusing staff set up and inaccurate note placement. For half the cost, you can purchase the Silver or Bronze award winning products.-- Totally wrong. Noteworthy is $39. The silver is $99.95, and the bronze is $399.99. The Noteworthy software is not high-priced at all for what it is capable of. Also, note placement is VERY accurate. You're supposed to use the up and down keys to position your note, not your cursor, which gives you perfect and fast placement EVERY TIME. I don't know anyone who uses the mouse to position their notes. In fact, the ability to use the keyboard for note placement is one of the primary reasons I prefer it over similar notation processors!
All of the the above responses refer to version 1.75b, and the answers are the same regarding the upcoming version 2.

I hope that in the future you are more careful about errors in your reviews.  This could cause Noteworthy Software or any other affected company a loss in popularity and profit.

Thank you for your time,

(my name)

A satisfied Noteworthy Composer user and beta tester

General Discussion / Re: 2007 Software Review Notation Pragrams
As was reported, there are a number of software products such as Cakewalk and Finale among others, which are not even mentioned.

Ugh! Don't even mention Finale Notepad while I'm around!  Cakewalk isn't too bad for midi importing.  It actually does a very decent job with it, including jazz notation, triplets, and getting the notes to fall on the actual beat.  I can't say the same about Noteworthy.

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
Why is the viola called a Bratsche in German?
Because that's the noise it makes when you sit on it.

I wonder, what sound does a smashing guitar make?  I don't typically go to full-blown rock concerts.

General Discussion / Re: 2007 Software Review Notation Pragrams
The specs given are so misleading. 8 lyrics is actually 8 lyrics per stave. I could do 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall in NWC without it even breaking a sweat.
How do you do that? I have a guess...is it by using multiple staves?  If so, you'd run into the playback problem of displaying highlights on the words on the correct verse and only correct verse's lyrics.

I'm just dying to try the wav input on The Firebird Suite. I wonder, if I try Carmina Burana, will I get the lyrics too? Always wanted to know what they were.
I've always been overly critical of wave input into a notation processor, and I've never seen one that even comes remotely close to even picking up a note for every beat, let alone anything that sounds like the song.

General Discussion / Re: Breaking a print line in the middle of a measure (bar)
One workaround for the NWC1 problem is to exclude measure numbers, and then write them in yourself on the printed page.  From there you could use a copy machine.  I used to have to do this all the time, because I had certain instances in jazz where a song would have intro measures A, B, C, and D. :)

General Discussion / Re: "This file was not properly saved"
I don't think Windows Vista is your problem.  I've used NWC1 and 2beta on Vista for a few months now and haven't had a single problem, except I've found out the sound card that came with my computer reeks (doesn't have enough tracks on it or something).  I'd say you've either messed with a setting or you've got an outside interference from some other program.

You might consider closing background programs while using NWC just to see if it helps.  This would include messengers, Internet, and antivirus, as well as any media players or document editors.

What do you call a dog with no legs?

What do you call a deer with no legs and no eyes?

Still no-eye deer!

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
I just was thinking, and with an electric guitar there's even more.  Depending on several variables, you could have a "beeorp," "neep," "eueurgh" (with a rough glottal noise), "doo," "wowp," "jang," the list goes on.
82
General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
I'd say it depends on how it's played:

With the finger, it's more of a 'b' sound.  With the pick, it's definitely a 'd' sound.

Also, I feel it depends on more than that.  If it's done lightly, it's like "duh," if it's done hard, I think it's more of a "deeeeuhhhhhh," and if it's done slap-bass style, plucked perpendicularly to the fingerboard with force, it's like "dee-Tzzzzuuuhhh."  The latter is not recommended for normal use.
83
General Discussion / Re: Cue notes
Warren, I just looked at your file.  I immediately noticed that the notes weren't lined up, BUT, since they're text, I was able to do the following:

Highlight your text (the fake cue notes), go to properties, expression placement, and tell it At Next Note/Bar.  See how that looks.
84
Tips & Tricks / Re: Numbering Lyric Lines
I always center my lyrics with my notes, so this is a bit harder to do, but basically you have to test different numbers of spaces in different places until they all (the words AND numbers) line up.  I've used this method only to start the verses...it would take too long to do every single line with the lyrics centered.

General Discussion / Re: Cannot get correct NWC or font Icons.
Help, please!  I`ve just done a complete system restore, clearing my C drive. Having previously saved NWC to my back up drive D, I now find that all my NWC files now show the "Windows cannot open" icons instead of the usual green piano with red notes.   I have just re downloaded the Boxmarks font, but instead of the normal blue font icon, this too is showing the  "Windows cannot open" icon, and therefore will not load into my main icon folder.  What am I doing wrong??  Thanks. Stokots

There seems to be some confusion on your font file.  If you're looking at a *.ttf or *.fon file, then it sounds like you need to restore the file associations.  If you're looking at a *.zip file, make sure you have compressed folders enabled (this is in the add/remove programs > additional components area.  As far as NWC goes, make sure you've installed it on your freshly wiped C drive, as that is where it resided in its former life.

General Discussion / Cue notes
In order to display cue notes (commonly found in orchestral works), one could enter each cue note normally, then hide each of those notes.  Immediately in front of each hidden note, duplicate it with a visible grace note (no slur).  This will ensure that each note will be played on time, and that the staves will all line up correctly.  If you would like to mute the cue notes, I believe NWC2 has the capability to do so.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 not properly playing some songs from Scriptorium?
Bob,

I also had a quick look and found no problem (not that I think that any of the other people who had a listen might be wrong), but I was looking from a Scriptorium perspective.

There are a few versions of the "Carnival" - perhaps you could say which one you were playing. I used Ramón Pajares Box's sequence to try this out. Was this the one you were using ?

Which piece did you finish with before moving on to Tchaikovsky ?

Can you try to load the Tchaikovsky diectly onto NWC2 after a boot up and see if you still get the problem (ie a clean boot and no Carnival first).

If I remember correctly, it was something along this order:
Vivaldi's La Primavera: 3allegro, then 1allegro, then the 2nd one...whatever it was.
Scott Joplin's Ragtime (for flute and oboe), Maple Leaf Rag
Carnival of the Animals (in Windows, the first file in the zip folder)
Tchaik's Symphony No. 4: 3rd movement, 1st movement, 2nd movement.
1812 Overture

I didn't listen for all of the parts prior to the first and second movements of the 4th Symphony...partially because it was not an issue which took away from the enjoyment of listening to it (while fiddling along).  I did notice the entire string section missing (or so it seemed) on the 1 and 2 movements, although on the 3rd, which was pizzacatto, I heard them loud and clear, and played along.

I then tried the 1812 Overture and noticed that the string section was missing once again.

I tried using reset.nwc to fix it but my efforts were fruitless.

I've noticed this before, but didn't remember to report it, when I listened to the following sequence:
Holst's Planets Suite (all of them), Carnival of the Animals, Light Cavalry Overture (when I noticed the 1st trumpet was silent, but unmuted).  I remember muting all staves except the trumpet and heard nothing.

As far as my computer goes, I won't rule out that possiblity.  I did think about the possiblity that the files used tracks that didn't exist.  The strings typically fall under a higher-numbered track, so this seems logical.  I just bought a new emachine, and the only device listed under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers is Realtek High Definiton Audio.
91
General Discussion / Re: NWC2 not properly playing some songs from Scriptorium?
You might also be reaching the polyphony limit of your sound card.  MIDI sound cards and devices can only play so many sounds at once (and some sounds are layered, and as such take up more slots than others).

Have you tried just playing the trumpet line you couldn't hear (press Ctrl-F5 on that track to just play that track).  If you hear the trumpets when doing that, then my guess would be that you are overextending your sound card.

For example, on my keyboard, if I use a particularly busy rhythm part, and then add my playing using a multi-layered instrument with lots of DSP and 10-finger chords, I find I have a lot of dropouts.  That's all because of the polyphony limit.

Anyway, just a thought...

I've tried muting all staves but the first trumpet...and there's this weird silence...
92
General Discussion / NWC2 not properly playing some songs from Scriptorium?
After listening to Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Säens, I was not able to hear the first trumpet on Light Cavalry Overture or the majority of the orchestra on the first and second movements of Tchaik's 4th in F.  These lines are not muted, and I tried using reset.nwc to fix the issue, but to no success.  What's up?

As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first.
So if you're a composer, and you just wrote something, and you want to make sure your brother's grandkids don't steal it, publish it anonymously and commit suicide. :) (Please, don't, by the way...!!!)

Your example is an excellent reason why a Page Break is needed. So much better than sending a song out to a graphics file and editing it.
Excellent idea!  Seems like in mentioning that example, I would have realized Noteworthy doesn't allow for this currently.  (At least, not that I'm aware of.)

My workaround in NWC1 for this issue was to insert a bunch of invisible Forced Break bar lines and invisible rests between them until it flows onto the next page.  I haven't had a need for it yet in 2, and I'm not at home, so I can't test it right now...but I'm pretty sure that 2 does not allow you to insert blank space by inserting an invisible rest, so this doesn't work.  I'll test it when I get home.

General Discussion / Re: How Do I make a Staff wrap to the next line?
Well, it was bound to happen sometime...and I hope no one minds...I've resurrected a long-dead topic.

I'd like to insert my two cents before letting this topic rot again.

Well that's the beauty of NoteWorthy.  You design the song to minimize jumps.
# of pages would much be less important than # of page turns (and their complexity).

I think this is interesting...I'm guessing you are a guitarist or pianist?  In that case, I can see where page turns aren't a problem.

As a violinist, however, I must say I hate page turns with a passion.  On average, a violinist needs about four measures (two in some slower songs) to turn the page, due to the fact that the bow hand has to change to a pizzacatto grip (the grip we use to pluck, which frees up a finger and thumb), and following the page turn, shift back into an arco grip (arco is when you bow, not pluck), and gently get the bow back in position to play (this last part is hard for beginners and takes several years to master, because if you're too fast, then the bow bounces...very undesirable!!!)  This is one of the reasons many professional violinists hire a page turner.

Having said that, I would like to say that I use (probably overuse) flow direction/repeats.  The object when composing for an orchestral string instrument is to minimize page turns, and if there are any, put at least four measures rest at the end of the page or the beginning of the next one.

So yes, the "print preview play mode" would need to be able to jump around, for us violinists, if it were to chase the notes.  I think the note chasing most be appreciated as much as the consideration from the composer about page turns.

For a VERY good example of a decent job in a composer considering page turns for the violins...check out Korsakov's "Romeo and Juliet: Montagues and Capulets" (handwritten version, probably the original).  Some pages have only two lines on them, but the rests are just right for the violinist.  This adds maybe two pages to the song, but it's definitely worth it.
