Sounds useful. It'd also allow various other styles to be added later. By the way, working on this score has taught me lots about terrible old conventions of music. Like the transposing natural trumpets labelled using the word nowadays used to indicate [French] horns, but which have to be trumpets because they're very obviously within the natural trumpet harmonic series, to writing the Soprano part using the Soprano clef (a C clef on the bottom line) - so just because something's in an old score doesn't always make it a good idea. =)

If you want to affect the sound, the @ key before a note lets you suppress triplet, slurs, and other markings so you can use other visual tools.

Besides wanting to have the odd word italicised at times, there's also things like multilingual scores, where having the ability to put, say, the French in italics and the English in normal text would aid the singer a lot; that's also the standard convention, more or less.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. In this case, where I was inputting a score that was fairly constantly having two beamed sets of notes against each other, it was easier to just do it as two scores, but it's a useful trick for things like the vocal score, where minor differences between verses need two layered staves - but much more irregularly.

The how do I get the top set of notes to beam? Layering could work, but in a full score, that means wrangling 20-some staves. Ugh.

Thanks so much everyone. You know how it is when you've been using something for a while. Been trying out the ] menu, and can say my scores now look so much better, collapsing things whenever I want them to, and adding more spacing as well.

I don't actually have the Rose sample as it wasn't included when I installed, which doesn't help, but... I think I've figured it out...

In this system, the trill stops at the end of the rest under the note, not the end of the note. Also it seems difficult to get nice short trill markings - I'd like tr. then maybe two waves; it seems to want to shoot off for ages.

I know this is one of those things that has been discussed for... well, looks like at least 10 years, but with the new objects tools, is there any way to, for example, in a vocal score where the piano comes in before the voice, to hide the vocal line for the first few printed staves? It's literally the only thing keeping me from getting near-perfect prints of my music.

Useful trick! *And, aye, you kind of have to use forced system breaks - otherwise, nine times out of ten, it seems, you end up with a single bar in the last system. Not to mention the whole problem of breaks at the end of a page in the middle of fast complicated passages.

For my own use, I made a few minor tweaks to Boxmarks2: Basically, for the h, i, and j characters -- the three "trilllike" ones, I tweaked it a bit so that they can overlap, making a continuous trill symbol by using, say, hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii or hiiiiiij or hiiijjiiijijiji if you are so inclined, instead of one with gaps in it. Of course, they will still work fine on their own, since the change is fairly minimal.

Does anyone know who I'd ask to be able to offer it to others?

I'm not... quite sure how you'd fix this, but...

I'm preparing a vocal score of a cut song from Yeomen of the Guard of appropriate layout to allow it to be cut to size and added into the standard score. As such, I'm trying to imitate Chappell's use of fonts and so on, with the exception of making the lyric font a little bigger, at the request of others.

As the score at a few points changes the left hand to the treble clef, I'm following the chappell custom of using a smaller clef when indicating the changes, hiding the clef that actually changes them. However, this means that not only the clef at the point of change disappears... but all clefs at the start of lines from then on.

Now, I DO have to edit the score a bit anyway, so it's not that much of a problem, but should it be beer to have a null-clef to add if you wanted to remove the clefs at the start of systems?

Setting the extend last system checkbox seems to extend only the last bar. However, if you instead use the section close barline with the Force system break checkbox, you get a much more aesthetically pleasing staff, but must then manually edit out the last system. Is there any way to fix this?

Hmm. Looked a lot worse in situ, than when I've now reloaded it (and forgive the naming error, it was late.)

I was getting somewhat odd spaces for the beginning and end of the tie: I still get that on the bottommost note of the chord when I paste it in - the slur is much shorter than it ought to be.

Should I get a screenshot?

I seem to recall one of the updates mentioning this was fixed. - it does make sense: before you hit problems where the last note got cut off abruptly in the exported midi if ye weren't careful.

HAving Timpani in a funny place was fine in NWC1. But in NWC2, the use of instrument trees means you can't just hit T to find timpani, and it's counter-intuitive to open up non-percussion groups searching for it.

Even people who know midi aren't going to click on a strings label in search for Timpani, for goodness' sake! It's a situation where the additional features are making a former non-problem into a problem.

Aye, but should we really be making it difficult for new users? The groupings make the timpani highly obscured. That's a very bad thing in a default setting.

Preventing a tie from resolving to a muted note would be awkward for anyone who didn't know about it. Might be best just to have the muted note turn the note it's tied to off when reached.

Rests being display optional MIGHT be a good idea, but I do worry a little bit about how much work you'd have to do to get grand staffs to display correctly if too much is being presumed by the program. Forcing it to be done by hand would make sure that hiding was intended.

I should also add that only a whole rest should be display optional by default, as well as, possibly, bar lines. For one thing, display optional notes MUST be clearly marked on the display pane, with a unique colour (or it becomes impossible to adjust them with any certainty (N.B. a second unique colour would be needed for invisible display optional things, of course)), and having every rest a different colour than the notes would be supremely awkward

I was trying to imply that would be the case in my example, but probably was fairly opaque in my description. I'd say the easiest way to handle the other problems is to redefine top staff to top VISIBLE staff - as, after all, top staff only is easily overridden. A further "Bottom staff only" command would provide further functionality for notes on the music, pedals, etc. Decorative staves, orchestral bar lines and the rest should self-adjust when the system is passed to the drawing function sans the removed staves, presumably.

So, is there any chance of being able to hide staves in some systems on the printed page but not others in an upcoming release? How far off would it be?

Also, might I suggest a way of working it? Being able to designate features as "not important" would let you just, say, highlight bars 12-40 on a stave, click a "not important" checkbox, and then the system need merely check if everything on that stave of a proposed system is marked not important. If it is, skip that stave. If not, print it.

E.g. I have a stave "Lead Soprano". She sings from bars 20-40 of a 60-bar composition, then is silent. I mark highlight all the bar lines and rests in bars 1-19 and 41-60 and mark them not important.

The program divides my composition into 8 systems, of 8 bars each. The first two, covering bars 1-16, show only the accompaniment. The third [17-24] has some non-important, and some important bars, and so is printed. the next three systems, encompassing bars 25-40 are printed, and then, the remainder being not important, isn't.

Notes on special cases: If all staves are marked non-important in a system, rules should be in place to arbitrarily print one, (a warning should possibly be flagged up) In the case of layered staves, if either has important things on it, both should print.

It's going to be an awkward feature to add, but it's important enough that the bullet's going to have to be bitten sooner or later. Please do it.

I'd really like to see an extention of the grace note functionality so that I could use the small notes for things like Cadenzas easily. I brought up on the old forum a cadenza from Monckton's country girl that was impossible to set up correctly using grace notes alone. (because there was a firm-set [and thus larger] note played at the same time as its start)

I'd also like to request the ability to shift two octaves, though there's slightly less conventon fo rthat. 16va, 15va - I suspect it ought to be 15ma, really - as well as clefs with little 15s above and below 'em.

[Also, whilst I'm asking: Mezzo soprano clefs, and the other rare C-clefs of that sort? Pretty please?

Ties across a key change are actually quite common. Particularly when you have a pedal, and especially when temporary jumps to other keys are being noted, as opposed to using accidentals.

I also appear to have a SigmaTel C-Major Audio Sound gard, I think, though I recently had a major comptuter crash and it's possible that Control Panel speaks falsely.
