figured bass

I transcribe baroque music with figured bass, putting the figures under the stave as text. I need to be able to use accidental signs with no note attached. Flats and sharps OK, but how do I print a natural sign.

Depends on the font you're using, but far and away the easiest is to use "Staff Symbols - ..." as the display font for your text entry.  This is the System font NWC is using to create stuff on the staff and contains sharps, flats and the natural.
I plays 'Bones, crumpets, coronets, floosgals, youfonymums 'n tubies.

Maybe the XText.hmm plugin is helpful here, because it allows mixing different fonts in one object. I have attached a figured bass example to show its usage (hopefully, the chord numbers are correct - my knowledge here is quite rusty ...).
