"Play notes on entry" - not working?

Regardless of the setting of the "Play notes on entry" box, the piano toolbar always sounds and entry from my midi device never does.
Notes from either source appear on the staff as expected.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

You appear to have already tried Tools/Options/Midi/Play notes on entry. Try Tools/Options/Record/Echo midi input.

It's only a wild guess, since I don't use midi, and the Help topic "Record Options Dialog Tab" doesn't get my hopes up, but it only takes a couple of seconds to try it.

The other suggestion might be to look at your system sound settings. Be very careful to make note of the settings before you change anything, because it can be a pain to return to your before-tinkering state ( but you may have a sound dialogue box in the system tray that allows you to toggle various input devices on and off).
