Midi prob

I am using NWC through WINE on ubuntu. Things r going fine, x I cannot hear anything during playback. Last time I had this prob, I switched the midi voices to: String Ensemble, & it worked fine, but now it isn't working. Help please. Everything else works fine. Oh, also I need to register my software, but no longer have the CD - I do have the info from the cover of the CD though.

Thanks,
Michael

G'day Michael,
not being familiar with either Ubuntu nor wine I can't be of specific help, but as a generality:
Do you get "system sounds" (assuming you haven't deliberately disabled them) ?
Can you successfully play non-MIDI audio (mp3's etc.) ?
Can you play a MIDI via some other MIDI player (I.E. not NWC) ?
Have you checked mixer settings to make sure that the volume isn't turned down somewhere?
Is the logical connection between NWC and the MIDI subsystem intact (I.E. no essential services are turned off) ?

I plays 'Bones, crumpets, coronets, floosgals, youfonymums 'n tubies.

Yes, Lawrie I do get system sounds, & yes I can play mp3's too.
I dunno if I can play a non-NWC MIDI. I haven't tried yet, & I don't think that any essential services are turned off.
Thanks for the help thus far.

Some apps will reduce the SW Synth volume to nothing.  I have had to move it back up on many occasions so NWC could play.  You will need to open the full volume controls to do this.

G'day Michael,
good start so far...

The most likely possibilities are (not in any particular order):
  • MIDI volume down or muted - check the mixer(s?)
  • MIDI configuration in NWC somehow gone awry - check |tools|options|MIDI (tab)|Devices used by playback
  • MIDI services in ubuntu "broken"
  • MIDI connection between wine and ubuntu broken.

Does this happen in linux too?  I thought it was pretty much limited to Windows Media Player (WMP) behaving badly.

I have used TiMidity for midi sound on Linux for years. It may need some simple set-up. There are very good Midi HowTo's for all Ubuntu versions. Works like a charm with NWC2/Wine.

I have not experienced any problems with applications setting volume to zero on Linux.
