Newbie question... bar lines alignment

Hi,

Just started playing around with Noteworthy Composer 2 and I've come across a problem with the bar lines aligning from the top staff to the bottom staff.

Now, my understanding is that this is caused by the wrong number of beats within each bar but I'm copying from Caro Mio Ben (http://www2.free-scores.com/PUBLIC/CIPOO/CaroMioBen.pdf) and despite putting it exactly as it is on the score it doesn't line up (starting with the first bar onwards).

Where am I going wrong?

Thanks very much for that link.

I found that the reason the bars were not lining up is I'd put the wrong note in (oops!) *but* I have encountered another problem that I cannot find how to fix.

Using the sheet that I linked first:

At the end of the first staff (2nd staff down, under "Ca - ro mio") the note ties down to the first note in the next bar, when it is entered it ends up too long and none of the notes in the bar line up like they should (there are 6 beats in the bar).

Any ideas where I've gone wrong?

I had trouble with your link. Clicking it would not work. Right-click followed by: Save target as ...  worked. Your link and mine are for different versions (in different keys). Sorry about the confusion.

You need a layer and Extra Note Space.

Ahh, I see!  Thanks very much, but how do I put the blank bars in like you have to keep everything lined up when there are no notes required on the second layer?  I've searched this forum and the user manual but cannot see it anywhere!

Rick has used a neat little trick that NWC2 can do...

The "empty" bars actually have rests in them that have had their "VertOffset" parameter adjusted to 2000 via a user tool - this moves them off the page so they don't show in the editor.  He's also set them to "Visibility Never" just to make sure :)

If you've used user tools before then Andrew Purdam's Global_Mod is the one, though I think Rick has also set up a VB script one for the purpose (don't quote me on that last bit)

The first gives access to the "Starter kit", the second takes you to the Scripto where there are additional tools available, the third is a general info document and the fourth is a more in depth document that you should probably leave till you've used them a bit.  The fifth link is to the User Tools board here on the forum - lotsa good stuff there too.

There's a lot of info there so don't rush and don't be overwhelmed - it's much easier than it seems.

To see the text clip of say, the second bar, you can unlayer things, highlight the bar and press <Ctrl-C> to copy to the clipboard - start notepad or the like and paste.  You'll see this:

Note the 4th line.  That is the "missing" rest in the bar.  The Opts:VertOffset=2000 bit is what moves it off the page, and the Visibility:Never just makes sure :)  Actually, it also means that the info is not sent to the printer at all reducing potential for other problems.  While the VertOffset parameter is available in the editor, there is a maximum limit of +/- 15 in the range that you can set it.  To get the 2000 you must use a user tool OR hand edit in notepad or the like.

That did the trick!  Thanks very much.

I've ran into another problem though (I'm sure I'll get a few until I get the hang of this...)

1) What is (and how to I put in) the small note on the first complete bar of the top stave?  It looks like a mini semi-quaver, labelled number 1.

2) Labelled number 2, how do I put that bar in?  I know it will use layers but the first notes are the issue.  When I put them in the minim is always in line (vertically) with the crotchet notes.  I tried using layers (which I know I'll need due to the number of beats) and putting a hidden rest to push the crotchet back a little but then it goes too far.

Problem 1. is simply solved by using the grace note property.  Place the notes as normal, highlight 'em and click the toolbar button that has a small red quaver followed by a black minim.

Problem 2. is essentially the same as the earlier example that Rick gave you a solution to.  On the layered staff, the crotchet chord needs extra note space added.  Make the chord, highlight it, press <Alt-Enter> to get the properties dialogue, select the Notes tab and then apply the extra note spacing in the spinbox.
