Question about the organization of my song

This is the same song I was getting the weird flats in the other day.

I am attaching a link to the 3 verses that are listed together in the song. I am having problems with the way I have it implemented, because the middle verese has 3 more syllables than the other verses. They are are are sung with eighths when the other verses have quarter notes. As it is
those extra 3 words bump the first refrain so the words in the first special ending are all messed up. The notes fit perfectly.

It would be nice if someone has a simple suggestion I'm not aware of.

Thank you in advance.

Here is a copy of my noteworthy file so you can see what am trying to
fix up. This time the link should be good.

The problem occurs in measures 38 - 70.

Again, thank you for any suggestions of things I can do to
improve that function.

It looks to me like you just need to skip syllables in the lyric line, using an underscore.

I'm going to make a wild guess that your problem is that you're stretching some words over too many notes in bars 42 to the beginning of the first ending.

If you remove the hyphens in the words in red, I think the music and lyrics will fit each other.

my heart the bat-tle was rag-ing. _
Not all pris'ners of war had come home;
there were bat-tle fields of my own making
Didn't know that the war had been won.

I haven't looked beyond the beginning of the first ending.

By the way, if you use Lawrie's suite of fonts, he has a character that works nicely to extend the horizontal line that should run across all the bars of the first ending.

Those extra dashes putlled back, pluss there were some underscores I had added to that special ending part.
