Tie

Hi every ...

I've got a long note connected to the next note with a "tie".
now, in between I have several other shorter notes in parallel to the long note.

my problem is :
one of the shorter notes is at the same pitch as the long note - so the tie arch breaks with it.

am I doing something wrong ?

A tie will terminate at the first note after the note initiating the tie that is at the same staff position. There is nothing you can do to stop this.

Well that's not strictly true. If you do everything on the same MIDI channel then probably (depends on your sound card) that's what happens. But you can always use layering (that wonderful universal panacea) to separate out the held note from the twiddles. Just make sure the layered staffs are on different channels.

Reply 1 is meant to refer to a single staff.

If you use layering, you can create a visual tie that spans notes on the same staff position (albeit in a different staff).

Let me guess. The music is vocal, with two singer on the same staff (such as Soprano and Alto). Both singers start at the same note, but one holds the note for a long duration, while the other singer changes to another note?

The best way to solve that problem is with staff layers.

Also, it is best to duplicate the starting note, with one stem up and one stem down (so that when layered, there are 2 stems at the same note head). One singer follows stem-up notes, and the other singer follows stem-down notes. That is customary.

No, Robert.
it is not about 2 singers.

I came across this problem with the flute and the Bassoon part of the score at an Opera by Mozart.

it is only for one or two bars - so I am kind of reluctant to use layering just for that.

thanks anyway

Ori, I forget whether you're very familiar with layering or not?  If you aren't, then create the new staff, fill it out with whole rests until you reach the bar you need layered, enter the desired notes, then fill out the rest of the piece with rests.  Make all the rests invisible. Layer it and you're all set.

I think that the question is really: Do I have to use a whole layered staff, just for one or two measures? Yes, that's how it is done in NWC1.75.
