Suggestions for a new release...

Dear Noteworthy executive types,

I'm a avid supporter of music notation software. I purchased your program a few years back. But now I've come to require some things that your program as of now does not contain. These items are not really difficult to add in, I wouldn't think. If you could get back to me on my email, da_tubaman@hotmail.com and reply back with what you think of my suggestions. Thank you.

Suggested add-ins:

*The tenor clef (for trombone writing), as well obscurities such as soprano and contrabass clefs.

*The use of inserting a time signature over multiple lines, like which is done in orchestral scoring.

*The playback timing sometimes is off by a few miliseconds, making rythymic sections appear very...awkward.

*The use of selection more than one note articulation marking (such as selection both accent and staccato), and the use of the rooftop accent

*The bow up and bow down symbols (no use except printed functionality)

*beaming eigths and smaller notes over rests, which would clean up alot of my scores.

*tremolo marking above notes (functional or not, it needs to be there) you konw, the / looking markings

That's about it for now. I might have so more requests later. Thanks you for time,

sincerely,
Drew Allen.

There's a Wish List for NWC. Find it from the main NWC page.

I'm pretty sure that NWC don't reveal it's future plans to anyone, neither publicly (here) nor by e-mail.

A number of wishes are very popular, so (hopefully) there will be some action there. My guess is that somethings gonna happen - used to be that NWC issued small changes a little bit at a time. There hasn't been small changes lately.

I'm not an executive type, Noteworthy or otherwise, but I offer the following comments on some of your suggestions:

*The tenor clef (for trombone writing), as well obscurities such as soprano and contrabass clefs.

++ Tenor clef is already available (it just does not have its own button on the toolbar for some reason).  Go to Insert Clef and use the drop down list.  I'm not sure what you mean by contrabass clef. If you want a bass clef that has a little 8 underneath to indicate sounding an octave lower than written then use Octave Shift [Down One Octave] on the Insert Clef Dialogue.  Currently there is no soprano clef - definitely worth adding to the wish list.

*The use of inserting a time signature over multiple lines, like which is done in orchestral scoring.

++ I have seen this in scores and always thought it looked a bit awkward.  However, each to his own.

*The playback timing sometimes is off by a few miliseconds, making rythymic sections appear very...awkward.

++ I think this is a function of your midi device not NWC.

*The use of selection more than one note articulation marking (such as selection both accent and staccato), and the use of the rooftop accent

++ Accent plus staccato is possible. However, tenuto plus staccato is not and the rooftop is only availble as a text item. (Use Boxmarks font available via the Scriptorium).

*The bow up and bow down symbols (no use except printed functionality)

++ available as text items (Again, use Boxmarks font).

*beaming eigths and smaller notes over rests, which would clean up alot of my scores.

++ This CAN be done already.  Do you have the latest version (1.75)?

*tremolo marking above notes (functional or not, it needs to be there) you konw, the / looking markings.

++ Available as text (again, use Boxmarks font).

quick to reply about Stephen:

1: thanks for the Tenor clef help.
2: the larger timesigs are for the conductor, so that he may easily conduct the piece, and it helps in general when reading the score.
3: didn't realize about multiuse of staccato and accent marks..that helps, but I would still like to have the rooftops aside from the boxfont.
4: the beaming across eighth rests is impossible (example: if I want to write, let's say eighth note, eight rest and then another eigth note, and then try to beam the two notes, it won't allow me to do this. also, in some cases, I would like to just beam out a single note, especially in piano pieces, to signify a change in the hand but continuation of the phrase. this is hard to notate as this point. as for boxmarks, i don't particularly like them because they don't fit right in all circumstances, especially the tremolo instruction. yeah, the soprano clef is needed for some of my scores of ancient choir music and a contrabass clef is a bass clef that is raised so that the two dots reach the first line instead of the second, bringing the staff down two whole steps. I read this clef because I play contrabass tuba. lol.

The large time signature would need to be very flexible because NWC will produce both score and parts from the same source.

Let's say you want to print the whole score, you would need a different size signature than if you printed individual parts, alone or in combinations.  The flute part would need a different size signature than a piano part, where a decision would need to be made to use two signatures or one.

How big should the signature be?  Is your score for a trio, a quartet, a jazz band, a full orchestra? Programming it would mean taking into account a lot of variables, although I imagine it could be anchored to the first and last visible systems on the page.

Beaming across rests works. What doesn't work is beaming a group that starts with a rest, but I'm not sure how much in demand there is for that.

The various user fonts sometimes aren't exactly what you need, but you might have some success by adjusting the size of the font (Alt-File; Page Setup; Fonts; Modify).  Also it often helps to tinker with the expression placement (highlight the text expression, press Ctrl-E.

While I think of it, can you provide some thinking about the horizontal size of the flexible height time signature?  If the height to width ratio doesn't change, you could end up with a graphic that takes up too much horizontal space, particularly with meter change in the middle of a composition.  What should the limits of the vertical:horizontal ration be?
