MIDI Recording Input Device -- none listed

I'm trying to set up Noteworthy to record MIDI from a keyboard, but when I go to the Options | Record tab, the "Input Device" dropdown does not list any input devices.

I have tried this on two different machines, one an IBM Thinkpad T23 (soundcard Crystal DWM), the other a Compaq desktop with a built-in card. Both machines are relatively new. The desktop is running Windows XP Professional, the laptop Windows 2000/sp3

Do I need some kind of third party driver for an input device or something?

If you are using a third-party MIDI hardware interface, it may be that the device driver software was written during the Windows 95/98 era, and doesn't work for 2000/XP. That's the case for a parallel-port MIDI interface I have. (The manufacturer has gone kaput; thus no software update, and there's nothing I can do about it.)

But if that's not the problem, maybe another user can help you. There's nothing inherently wrong with the NWC software, insofar as getting MIDI from a keyboard is concerned. The most common problems have been switched in/out cable (yes, even among experienced musicians), and MIDI interface driver problems unrelated to NWC.

Check your control panel, system settings.  IF you press F1 while at your desktop, Windows Help will open and tell you how to check it.

Don't know if XP does this, but in Win98 if you have the sound icon in your systray (bottom right corner of your screen), right click it.  That will open your volume controls.  At the play control screen, select options, properties, and make sure midi is ticked in the little window that opens. And make sure it is not muted when you return to the previous screen.

Followup on my own question.

What I need is some kind of hardware input that will accept a 5-pin MIDI input, and a driver for the hardware. Some sound cards come with this capability, but the one on my IBM Stinkpad does not.

SO -- a little searching turned up a Rowland USB to MIDI adapter that comes with drivers for Win98/NT/W2K/XP and even a MAC. Commes in two versions, one with a longer cable than the other. Street prices under $50 for the more expensive one, under $40 for the less costly one. Here's a url to the less expensive one:
