General Discussion / Re: Kind off topic...
my deepest wish is that i could simply get the Y-SXG 50 to work on vista, all you needed to do to use it was use it as playback device. does anyone of any synthesizer/soundfont bank/what ever, that all i have to do is swich it to my playback device. more stuff about custom soundfonts and dowlonding sound banks is way beyond me

General Discussion / Re: Kind off topic...
well i'm not really looking for singular soundfonts so i guess i should have been more clear. on my XP i had added 2 whole sets of sound fonts, one from yamaha which i simply downloaded, and one from creative, which reqired me to install an actuall physical soundcard. unfortunatley my XP exploded and has gone to the great radioshack in the sky. What i am truly looking for a set of sounfonts, in a format similar to the yahmaha, which only requires software.

General Discussion / my belated new year's piece
Well i've finally got around to doing my first piece of the new year. I know its not finished but i have to wake up in 5 hours.

Thought i'd right an actual song with proper lyrics this time

General Discussion / Re: Weird sounds
I have to say I actually like "therapy". It, like many of Hamilton's works, is an excellent mood piece. Although it also shares the fault of many other experimental works in its lack of a dicernable melody or form, this can be overlooked.

very...experimental. reminds me of a piece i started once, i called it the migrane song.

but i have no right to criticize after all, i am responsible for this

General Discussion / Re: Writing a Symphony
if you want advanced lessons on orchestrial development, listen to Bolero by ravel.

My advice though is to go with whatever sounds right to you, not just what is the "right" way to orchestrate things

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
this is why i stick with synths, i only remember the ranges and transpositions of about a third of the orchestreal insturments

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
i'm lazy, but i thought i had at least put a C time signature on the ones i put on the scripto. i guess i'll take a look

General Discussion / Re: YA ALL ROCK
Nah, george had the best (in my opinion). i think john would have had the best but it was not ment to be i guess. and ringo music, well i guess for him it don't come easy

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
well, it's (more or less) done

a sight only drum part would be useful, except i've disliked every drummer that i've met in person so i wish to make life hard for them.

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
that video was hilarious, thank you. and yes i wrote (and am still wirting) that piece. but i am somewhat at aloss as to what i should label the parts, they are almost all synths.

General Discussion / Re: Pablo Cruise
Ahh, but you see, It wasn't ment to be a serious post, merely an off-the-cuff observation.

And one thing I am certain of, is that the 70's produced as many illiterates as the 90's.

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
ehrm, somewhere back we were trying to establish what a guitar sounds like.

twanggg (unskilled player)
miaoaoaoao.... (electrical guitar with whammy bar)
dum dum dum dum (bass guitar)
dow dow deedow dow (jamming away)
pling pling pling pling (steel guitar)

anything else?

yes, Chunk chunk (metal guitar)

nick mccabe was able to use his guitar to immitate bird songs(using feed back) the creaking of trees and some sounds that really pass beyond comparison. Johnny greenwood has imitated whale songs, jazz trumpets and a rhodes piano. and jimmy hendrix has done every sound concievable

General Discussion / Re: what sound does a guitar make
i guess you could be literal and say it sounds like picked nylon string. if you want to be comparitive you could say it sounds like a gently plucked cello. or you could say it has a gentle meloow humming noise (accustic of cours)

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
i can still remember the midi sounds of the windows 95. one piece that i had written for a whole orchestra came thru sounding as though there were only a synth bass flutes and clarinets (there were none of theses).
definently the best set of sounds out there is yahmaha's stuff

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
maybe something simpler?

p.s the guitar should be assinged a quieter dynamic if your listening with a standard soundfont

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
here's another song, counterpoint was driving me insane

p.s i wrote this on a yahmaha sound font, so sorry if the insturment choice sounds a bit off

General Discussion / Re: A musical question
a canon is a melody that is counter point with its earlier on. or you could say on staff 1 the melody A enters, 4 measures later melody A starts on staff 2, another 4 bars it starts on saff 3.
fugues are less strict. melody A enters on staff 1, 4 beats later the counter melody enters on staff 2. 8 bars later the original melody enters on staff 3.
esssentialy a fugue gives you more freedom.
