Keyboard entry

Is anybody out there using a keyboard to enter music? I am trying to use a Roland PC-200 dumb keyboard but can't get the length of the notes right. Would like to here from somebody who has more experience.

I am also having problems with sound not cutting off when keys are released but that is probably a hardware problem?

Thanks for help

J

Johnny,

I've experimented with using the a musical keyboard to enter notes, but found I was still quicker working from the computer keyboard.

you say: "I am trying to use a Roland PC-200 dumb keyboard but can't get the length of the notes right. "

Note lengths can be adjusted lots of ways. Mod wheel, Pitch wheel, data slider. These will adjust the note length (crotchet, minim, etc). If you twiddle whilst the key is held down, you will rotate through dotted and double dotted notes.

Doesn't this happen with your keyboard? Does the PC-200 HAVE a pitch or mod wheel?

"Would like to here from somebody who has more experience." Sorry! :-)

"I am also having problems with sound not cutting off when keys are released but that is probably a hardware problem?"

Hmm. Can't tell, as NWC only echoes percussion on my setup. Can't tell what I'm doing wrong.

Andrew, thanks for your msg. Yes, the Roland has a mod wheel and it shifts between crotchets, quavers etc. I find it clumsy to use and as you said, it is faster to enter music directly from the computer kb. I am testing two demo software packages, one from Micrologic and the other from Steinberg (Cubase). With either, you can enter notes from the Roland and they play back OK but look wrong on the screen. Eg. you enter 4 quavers and the screen shows several combinations of notes, making up the correct length, interspersed with rests I didn't put in. My guess is that I am not 100% on the beat...

Not wanting to sound like a salesman, but... :-)

In NWC, when you import your midi recording, you can set it up to round to the nearest quarter, eighth, sixteenth or whatever note.

I'm interested in your testing CuBase as well. Isn't that in the multi-$100 mark? I'd be interested in your views as to how well NWC stands up to these other guys. And I hope Eric would be intersted, too! :-)
