Tonal Harmony

What kind of chord would you use to lead into a vi, similar to the way you use a VII to lead into a IV?

You could try III 7th. So in the key of G the progression would be B7 to Emin. You could get to the B7 from Dmaj by sharpening the D and adding the B.

This must be fairly common in folk music because my Melodeon (a sort of button accordion) has only six base chords to fit the keys of G and D. These are C, G, D and A as expected, and then Emin and B7 which are unexpected but obviously historically of more than trivial importance.
