Beamed Notes

I have found that if I have a group of beamed notes
and then I insert text such as a dynamic marking
starting on a note other than the first one, that the
notes are unbeamed.

Any suggestions on working around this problem?

Two quick ideas come to mind:
1) Start at the left of the group of notes and pad the text with spaces (with Preserve Width OFF, obviously :)
2) Climb up from a stave below, or down from a stave above.
