Most likely culprit: MIDI playback not selected. Fix: Menu Tools > Options > MIDI tab (you may need to scroll the tabs ). My guess is that more than one available playback device is listed, but no divice is used for playback. Select one of the available devices (best choice is usually Microsoft MIDI Mapper), and transfer it to the right. Then OK, and try your sound.

One other possibility is that you muted the notes. Right-click a staff, then Staff properties > MIDI. Be sure that "Muted" isn't checked.

Have you tried rt-click on speaker icon on task-bar and 'open volume controls' and see if there is a tick in the 'synthesizer' section and the volume is turned up?

G'day Finlay,
if I may... Please don't be offended by llucyy's suggestion.  We get people with all levels of competence asking questions and it is often quite difficult to determine just where each person "sits".  llucyy was only trying to be helpful.  Besides, we all miss the simple things sometimes... :)

Now, a couple of questions to try and help narrow the field somewhat.

  • Do you have any problems with other NWC files that you have not created?
  • If yes, can you play back a midi via a midi player like, say Van Basco's Karaoke Player or the like?
  • If no (to q2), does your selected midi player allow you to choose which synth you're using or are you forced to use the "midi mapper"?
  • If you can select other synths do you get sound when you test any of the others?
  • If/When you identify a synth that works, is that the synth that is selected as your playback device in NWC?
  • Do you have more than one synth selected in the playback device list?  If yes, then I highly recommend you reduce it to 1
  • If you didn't have a problem in Q1) but do with files you have created, is it all of them or just this one?
That's probably more than enough for the moment.  Hopefully I've given you a clue and you can solve it yourself.  Otherwise please let me know the results so we can try further steps.

I will be away from a computer for most of next week so I can only help 'till Sunday night (Oz time).

The program with volume controls is not so easy to find on all PC's! Sometimes (often!) it is not in the system tray, sometimes it is not found in accessories, sometimes the shortcut does not work, sometimes General Mayhem.

When in doubt, I always execute 'sndvol32', and check the 'SW SYNTH' section.
Pointing out the volume controls and its meanings to anyone should not insult anyone.
