The concept of using drums is easy once you understand the basics of MIDI.

Drums are played on Channel 10 (although you can add more using SysEx, although I don't want to confuse you).

You can set the Channel in NWC by:
1) Press F2 on the staff(s) you want to be your drums
2) Click on the MIDI tab
3) Set Channel to 10

This staff will now play percussion instruments instead of a single instrument. Perhaps the confusing part is that each note represents a different percussion instrument. On the other MIDI channels, each note plays a tone from the same chosen instrument.

There is a mapping of which note plays which percussion. For example:

Middle C = C4 = High Bongo
(see your devices manual for exact mappings)

Of course, it also depends which device you have and which Drums kit you have set. Setting different drums kits is done by going to the INSTRUMENTS tab and clicking on a different instrument.

This sounds confusing because when you click on "Strings", you are actually selecting the ORCHESTRA drum setting which gives you a small drum set (Concert Cymbals, Timpani, Concert Snare and Bass drum). "Strings" is really #49 (if you look at it from the point of view of the Patch List Type)

There are tutorials about basic MIDI all over. Just bring up your favorite search engine and read all about it.
