Page Numbering

I would like to put my songs in a binder with an index, but I can't find any instructions on numbering pages.  Is it possible to add page numbers, and if so, is it possible to choose their location.

Page numbers are added by clicking on Page Setup\Options tab, then check Page Numbering.  They will appear in the upper right-hand corner.  Numbering will start with page 2.  There is no way to select the location, however.  This is also true on NWC2

I encountered this identical problem a while back.

I freely admit that the following is a cumbersome process, but, hey, it works!  I also admit that I really would like to see MUCH more control from within NWC over the look and positioning of items on pages that are printed from within NWC.

I (sort of) solved the problem of having the page numbers appear on the upper OUTSIDE edge of the pages in this manner, i.e., odd number pages have the page number on the upper right and even number pages have the page numbers on the upper left.

First, I decided to print my songs on both sides of a sheet of paper.

I used MS WORD to prepare this index page , assigned it the page number 1.  Control over margins, page numbering, positioning, etc., are quite easy with WORD.  I set the margins as follows:  Top: .50,  Left: 1.25, Right: .50, and Bottom: .50.  After saving this file as a WORD document, I then printed the index page.

Note: the 1.25 margin is wide enough to allow for binding using the binders that I chose.  You may need to adjust your margins, depending on the binding system that you choose.

I then opened an NWC file of one of the songs that I intended to print and bind. Note that all of my songs (thus far) are 2 pages in length.  If yours are longer, or shorter, you may need to adjust this process a bit.

I clicked File > Page Setup > Margins and checked the "Mirror Margins" box. I set the margins as follows:  Top: .50, Inside: 1.25, Outside: .50, and Bottom: .50.  Again, the large "Inside" margin is to allow for binding.

I then clicked File > Page Setup > Options and checked the "Page Numbering" box.  I then set the "From" box to "2".

I then took the Index page that I had previously printed and placed it in my printer in such a manner that the next page I printed would appear on the BACK of this page.  (I made certain that the newly printed top would match the top of the index page.)

I then clicked File > Print and when the printing dialog box appeared, within the "Print Range" portion, I clicked on the radio button in front of "Pages" and in the "from" box I inserted the numbers "2 to: 2" and printed page 2.

I then clicked File > Print and when the printing dialog box appeared, within the "Print Range" portion, I clicked on the radio button in front of "Pages" and in the "from" box I inserted the numbers "3 to: 2" and printed page 3.

Note that Page 3 was printed on one side of a new sheet of paper.  I took this newly printed sheet and placed it back into my printer so that the next page would be printed on the back side, again taking care that the top would print in the correct place.

I then opened another NWC file of another song, changed the page numbers to "4" and "5" respectively and repeated the process described above.

I repeated this process, changing the page numbers each time, until I had printed all of the songs that I wanted to bind.  I then collated all the pages and bound the finished product.

I printed 60 copies of this "songbook" for use by the congregation of my church (small church).

Now, each time I create a new hymn, I just number it appropriately, print a new index with the first page of the first song on the back. Then I print the last page of the previously printed song, print the new hymn, and then replace the index and add the newly created hymn to the binder.

This is a mighty round-about way, but, like I said earlier, "It works!"

BTW when the Index page got larger than one page, I just inserted a picture of our church and a "title" page so that the page sequence would come out properly.

Now, that's how I done it! (sic)  I hope that you can figure out my process.

Thanks to both of you for replying.  Carl, it always makes me feel a bit useless to find out it was in front of my face all the time. Thanks for helping me find it.

Debo, That's exactly what I wanted to do, number pages to put in a book.  I made a copy of your instructions.  I have WP, but maybe it will work there, too.

Except for the "Index" page, I printed all of my "songbook" directly from within the NWC program.

I use MS Word for printing the "Index" only of my "songbooks".

Word will not easily print sheet music.  It can be done, but it is a lot of hassle and the best finished product that I have been able to create so far does not look very good.

Someone, somewhere, recently mentioned creating PDF files from NWC in order to facilitate printing the music, but I have never tried to do this, I do not know how, and I do not know how the printing looks.

BTW it is possible to reduce the size of the music and print it using the "Landscape" setting.  This enables you to create "songbooks" with pages of a size of 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches.

Pdfcreator (from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/)pretends to be a printer.  You just select it as your printer, then use the normal print commands from whatever program you're in.  Wait a couple of minutes, and you get a couple of short forms that ask you the name of the file and where you want to store it.

When you want hard copy, you just open the pdf file in AcrobatReader and print it normally.

The result is exactly the same as if you'd printed directly from the program, but Acrobat does give you some flexibility in adjusting page sizes.  Normally, I select the page size before printing to pdfcreator, so there's no worry about distorting it in acrobat.

Give it a try - it's freeware (ore donate-ware?)  I find it useful for printing big band charts because people sometimes lose or misfile their parts.  Once I've produced them and saved them as pdf's, it takes but a moment to reprint each one.  Much easier than returning to nwc, figuring out which staffs to open, and how to tweak them to get the right number of pages, etc.

Absolutely correct! Pdfs are easy to mail, they always print the same, another freeware (although it tries to be adware offline) is pdf995 and its brother the editor. the advantage of the editor is that you can concatenate (put several songs together) and make a pdf songbook.
