MIDI Input problem(no input device shown)

I have a Yamaha PSR-230 keyboard, and it's attached to my computer with a  MIDI cable. My computer claims that the device is working properly, the drivers are all up to date etc, but I can't get my keyboard to input notes. In the options menu under the record tab, under "input device, there is nothing there in the drop down arrow is. How can I get my keyboard to input notes? I have an XP and the trial version of NWC... Any tip is much appreciated... thanx

If you do not see any devices in the Input Device drop down box of Tools, Options, Record, then you do not have a MIDI Input device driver installed on your system.

Also... If your MIDI driver dates back to pre-XP days, be aware that some pre-XP drivers won't work with XP, no matter what you do. Has nothing to do with NWC. See if interface manufacturer has a driver update.

Thanx for getting back to me... I am a bit novice so I am not sure what to do next... when u said interface manufacture does that mean the midi cable or midi keyboard? is it better just to install the the sound cardon an NT computer then if its not gonna work with XP? where do I get midi driver update? thanx

Ok here is the situation... I have taken the sound card off the XP and installed it into the NT computer (compaq), installed the proper driver for NT... and voila... it is working... thanx for your tips...

Now back to NWC... how can I write on both staves at the same time (right/left hands) is that possible? ans another question I can't hear music coming from the computer when playing the piece back what should I do?

Oh I forgot to ask one more question... how to get the NWC to detect the length of the note automatically... is it possible? Thanx.

Others know more than I do about this, but to get you started...

It is unlikely that the problem is with the keyboard. As for the cables, users often have them switched (solved by exchanging cable connections at the keyboard. But that doesn't sound like your problem.

The "driver" is the software installed on your computer. It detects that a MIDI device has been connected, and operates the input and output of digital signals in your computer. Driver software is related to the sound card (or whatever device) to which you connect your MIDI cables. So, in the event that you need a driver update, you would go to the website of the sound card (or interface device) manufacturer, look for the model, and see if there's an update. You can also try the "Windows Update" feature in Internet Explorer. There's also a driver update feature in the "My Computer" device manager. Of all these choices, going to the sound card manufacturer's web site is probably the best choice.

You might also need to re-boot.

If none of the above helps you, then you'll need advice from a more experienced user.

Thanx.

At the moment it seems it is a configuration issue... someone mentioned that I have to take out the original sound card leaving only the one with the midi.. so I'll leave that for now....

i wanna get started with enjoying the fact that we can play the keyboard and get it written on the computer... but can someone help me with my question please... Thanx a bunch
