Midi input problem

I have a Yamaha PSR-220 keyboard, and it's attached to my computer with a USB device--XP MIDIMate.  My computer claims that the device is working properly, the drivers are all up to date etc, but I can't get my keyboard to input notes.  In the options menu under the midi tab, under "available devices," "USB Audio Device" is listed as an option, but when I move it over to the "Devices Used By Playback" column, I get an error message saying that it failed to open properly.  How can I get my keyboard to input notes?

Well, you don't say if it is working Ok on playback.  (notes played  on keyboard)

Adjusting the available devices on the Midi Tab is for Playback.

I have seen that error message when i mix available devices, such as Midi mapper and Midi synth out, etc.
Remove all your selected devices, then try them one at a time to see what works. That will set your playback devices.
To hear notes from your keyboard, you need to click on the Record Tab and set the appropriate device there.
I don't use the USB midiman. My card just gives me one option. Perhaps you have more than one option at this drop down menu ?

Also, as a separate issue, make sure your midi leads are plugged into the keyboard correctly.
Plug marked Midi In goes to Midi Out on keyboard, and
Plug marked Midi Out goes to Midi In on keyboard

(This won't make any difference to devices available, but will obviously not allow you to hear or play notes, if incorrectly connected.)
