rest problem

if you import midi files with time signatures
changes on rests (no notes) and save it again
it is misplaced, so if you import it to
other programs it will be misplaced, but
will be fine if you import it back to nwc

an example:

[clef]3/4(supposed to be a dotted half rest, but
imported as a half rest;this is the problem)|4/4|
|(its fine here)|3/4|[notes start here](its fine here)|

sorry, I meant the half rest is a whole rest

If I understand, you're importing a file that is:
1.Clef sign
2.Time signature 3/4
3.Dotted half rest
4.Time signature 4/4
5.Time signatre 3/4
6.Some notes.

You're getting
1.Clef sign
2.Time signature 3/4
3.Whole rest
4.Time signature 4/4
5.Time signatre 3/4
6.Some notes.

The whole rest is commonly used to denote a rest of an entire bar, whether the bar is in 4/4 or in 3/4 time - see, for instance, http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Whole%20note%20rest

NWC handles it well but whatever program you're using to import the NWC-midi file isn't handling it correctly.

I guess the answer is to manually change the whole rest to a dotted half rest while in NWC, then save it in that form.

By the way, what have I missed between the two time signatures at steps 4 and 5 above?

sorry, I meant that "audit barlines" doesn't fix it

Would you restate your question, please?  At this point I don't know what it is that you're asking.

What is it that you think Audit Bar Lines should fix?

I mean if it works it should mess up the barlines
after the rest so that I know there's something wrong

If you start getting quarter notes that should be within a measure being split into tied 8th notes straddling a bar line, it is because there is something wrong with the number of beats you've entered in a bar before that place.

That should be enough "messing up," I think.

You can always add a new staff and fill it with complete bars of quarter notes to use as a visual check (I prefer this over using audit bar lines).  Just delete it after you've finished your score.
