New instruments

I suggested not to long ago for NWC2 to be fully compatible with sound fonts without a good sound card but they were all against me, so...

How about if they just added some more instruments to it?

I understand that NWC is more focusing on "composing" and other stuff, but I realized not only I, but a lot of other people use this program to enjoy making and listening to their own songs.

I'm not sure if any music notation program can "add more instruments" unless it provides its own audio database.

Beethoven could have written music for "Aluminum trombone," but since aluminum metal didn't exist in his day, they music couldn't have been played.

I think you can select the MIDI Bank fiels to use them. Besides, if noteworthy made new instruments, they would be software maps and thay would probably sell them...

Ur talking about trombones, well, beetoven (however u spell his name) probably didn't compose a music for a trombone that is as crappy as the one given in NWC.

Noteworthy does not have any instruments. All it does is send MIDI instructions to your sound card which then creates the noises you hear.

If the trombone sounds awful then it is the fault of the sound card, and nothing to do with NWC.

I am sure there must be something in this forum about using sound fonts, but being an infrequent visitor do not know where it may be, but for what it is worth, I have only recently learned that you can use soundfonts with NWC even if you don't have a good sound card, using MidiYoke and SynthFont.

You direct the output of NWC to MidiYoke. The input of SynthFont to the same MidiYoke device. The output of SynthFont to your soundcard using your chosen soundfont.

These are the instructions which I followed, courtesy of Sue on the newsgroup:

<<I'm using NWC2 and WinXP.  (Midi-Yoke was already installed.)

1.  Launched SynthFont and cancelled out of the request to load a MIDI file.

2.  Clicked on menu File -> Set Default SoundFont File -> and I navigated to
my soundfont bank directory and loaded a simple GM bank.

2.  Clicked Setup Button -> I/O ports (tab) and selected Midi-Yoke 1 for my
input midi device.  Soundcard is my output audio device.

3.  Click Input button.

4.  Launched NWC2.

5.  Clicked on menu Tools -> Options and selected Midi-Yoke 1 as my ONLY
output device.

6.  Loaded an NWC file, and hit F5 to play.

I am using the KX drivers with NWC. These are free.

These work with the SB Live and other Creative cards(but don't take over the system).

With it I am using the GM Merlin 2.2 soundfont(28mb). I have used other much larger too. It is also possible to edit soundfont banks to choose your own preferred instruments.
