ZIP Files

This really doesn't have much to do with NWC, but when I try to open a .zip file located on the site, or in the Scriptorium, my computer tries to open it with Adobe Acrobat, and a message pops up saying "Error: Files does not begin with PDF." Is there a way to open these ZIP files without using Adobe? Any replies are appreciated. Thanks.

Try associating zip files with Winzip - I think you can do this best from your Windows Explorer after you've downloaded the file. Locate it in W.E. and then select it. Then choose View, Folder Options, File Types.

If you don't have winzip, it should be available on the web if you search for the word winzip.

You don't necessarily need Winzip. But whatever program you use, it is very surprising that your computer thinks that Acrobat Reader might be useful for un-zipping.

Before doing anything else, right-click the file (instead of double-clicking) and see if the context menu offers any useful choices.

Since Acrobat Reader installs itself as a plug-in, it might not be as easy as installing a zip reading application and changing file associations. If changing file associations does not help, you might try uninstalling Acrobat Reader and then reinstalling it, since it should not be loading when clicking on zip files.

I think I know what happened.

First, he didn't have winzip on his pc.
then he downloaded a ZIP file.
then he Double-clicked it.
then the windows poped a question :
"with what program do you want to open it ? ".

there was a long list of available installed program.
he didn't noticed it and clicked OK.
the programe which was marked at this time was
Acrobat-reader, but it could have been any other just as well.

so now every time double-click a ZIP file -
windows activates the poor Acrobat reader and lets her
struggle with the file.
and of course "she" don't know how.
she was made to cope with PDF files ....

what you need to do :

1) check if you have WINZIP installed.
( control pannel -> add and remove programs )
see if it is there.

if not then

download it from http://www.winzip.com

and install it ( I think Double click should do the trick)

2)if you have indeed installed it now the problem should be already solved ( since winzip changes file associations)

if not:

go to your file explorer.
tools -> folder options -> file types.

look for ZIP files.
then press EDIT -> open and again EDIT.
an look for the WINZIP EXE file.

OK that's it !

Ora Itai is almost certainly correct! That is the most likely way that ZIP was accidentally associated with Acrobat Reader.

My XP machine has built-in unzip. I do not know if all of them do, or if it was added by the computer manufacturer.
