Problems with new NWC Newsgroup

I have just subscribed to the new Newsgroup, but things are not going as well as they should:

Subscribing, using the password went without a hitch, but clicking the news:// URL activates my e-mail client and here trouble begins:

1. I receive the postings in my e-mail, but only those that are 'new', i.e. those that were added since my last e-mail check.
2. I can't reply to the messages. A pop up window asks for a return e-mail address, and an outgoing server name.

Any solutions?

I use the M2 e-mail client embedded in Opera 7.03

Thanks.

Ivo

Think YOU have it bad???

First, I do not, and WILL NOT use Outlook Express for newsgroups or anything else. That software is, to put it mildly, junk in a MicroSlop wrapper (redundant statement alert!).

Next - using Netscape, I added the news server, and when I 'went there' it never asked for a password. And when I searched for the new newsgroup, it came back "not found."

I'm sure I am simply overlooking something, and will just have to leave it sit until I have time to play with it, which right now I do not.

I also am not convinced that making the newsgroup private, to registered NWC owners only, is a good idea. In the least.

Hmmm. Signed up for the newsgroup. However, never asked for my password and keep getting a message like "Outlook Express unable to switch to the newsgroup .

Could not download messages.

Obviously doing something wrong. Help?

Quick question: gifs, tifs and the like are of moderate qualify for music. Can we also attach files in pdf format? (Of course, on this newsgroup, who would want to bother to post something in other than nwc format? Maybe an academic question?).

My experience of trying to subscribe to the newsgroup is exactly like Steve Pearson's.  Could Eric give us a little more guidance, please?

I'm none too bright when it comes to setting up stuff like newsgroups on my computer and rely a lot on trial and error - but I also came up against this problem. I found that after clicking on the address Eric gave us, the new address appeared in my folders bar of Outlook Express, and I then just rightclicked on the subfolder noteworthy.composer and clicked on "subscribe" , ticked the login box and put in the codes asked.

I hope that helps :)

OK, I've just found out how to receive all the messages from the newsgroup. So, problem #1 is solved.
Problem #2 remains: how can I post a message to the group and how can I reply to a message? A pop-up asks for a 'To' e-mail address and an outgoing SMTP server name.

Ivo, I am not familiar with your e-mail client, so I don't have any specific answers. From a casual read on its web site, it implies that it handles newsgroup posts just like e-mail. It seems like if you are unhappy with the way this client handles newsgroups, you might want to switch to a client that handles newsgroups more effectively.

For others having problems, account name and password entry varies by newsreader. Look for an Accounts property menu in your newsreader, and find the place where you enter this info. All newsreaders should support this.

In OE, goto Tools | Accounts, click the News tab, and Add the newsgroup. In the newsgroup account properties, the Server tab is where you add the Account Name and Password.

The accounts thingy worked like a charm. I don't do much with newsgroups, so have not had occasion to look at that. Thanks for the tip!

I won't use Outlook Express.  I use the Mozilla Firefox and web-based email (Hotmail to be exact).  How on earth do I access the newsgroup?  I never knew anything like this existed; I thought I could just go there with my internet browser like any other forum.

I use the full Mozilla package, but I think Thunderbird, from the Mozilla web-site, will access the news-group.  I suspect that Forté Free Agent will, too.  But, if you are already using Forté I haven't figured out how to access more than one server without resetting all the parameters.  It's probably possible, but I don't know how.

Newsgroups are not like email.  You need a newsgroup service. Outlook Express has one; it's a little hard to figure out.  Ultimately, I came across, or was referred to, GrabIt.  It's freeware, and can be downloaded here

I think I still use OE for the NWC forum, but I seldom go there.

The NoteWorthy news group is on a private server, maintained by NoteWorthy, so that isn't really a problem.  You only need a news service if you want to dive into the usenet groups.  Other specilized news groups are also on private servers, including Microsoft, Corel, Symantics, Netscape (including Mozilla).  Anyone with a news reader can access those.

My ISP includes a very well stocked usenet server, and I thought that most ISPs did so.  Maybe I've been mistaken, but you could ask.
