Recording from Audio Line In

I am attempting to record with a guitar through my audio In
line on the back of my computer.  Is this gonna work? No luck so far.  I'd appreciate any help.

The forum will probably need further info, but let's start with this.

1. Are you attempting to simply record in your guitar (more or less like a tape recorder), or do you have a midi interface on your guitar (and desire to record in the notes that will show up on sheet music, as in NWC)?

2. What software are you using to "record in"? Is it set to recognize the recording source?

3. Is "audio in" selected as the recording source on your volume control. (You may have a volume control icon in your task bar; right click to get settings).

4. Are your multimedia properties correctly set? (Go to control panel, multimedia properties if you are using a windows operating system).

5. What hardware are you using to record in? Mike? Direct Plug in from an Acoustic Electric guitar (or bridge or hole insert)? Interface with Rocktron PCpreamp or similar device? Warning: be very careful (!!!!) if you need to generate or amplify a signal through an external amp which is then plugged into the computer. Start with the VERY LOWEST volumes possible and tweak in very small increments while watching input levels on the sound volume or recording software. Very easy to blow out a card! Also, very easy to overdrive and get a bunch of distortion.

Sorry. More questions than answers (and there are lot more areas that might be explored), but might at least get you started on the right track.
