Slurs and Ties

Any ideas on how I can move the slurs and ties closer to the notes so they do not over-run the lyrics? I know I can change the spacing around the staff but the lyrics seem to be in a fixed position relative to the notes.

You can't move vertically the slurs and ties, but you surely can move the lyrics vertically, with or without changing the spacing around the staff.

Being on the staff you want, open the Lyrics window (menu Edit/Lyrics... or Ctrl+L), choose the configuration tab (Alt+Home) if needed.
There you can play with the two values in the Staff placement groupbox: Alignment and Offset.

The spacing around the lyrics can ben changed there too, as well as in the Staff Properties (F2) window (Visual tab, Vertical size values)
BTW they will change when you change the two other parameters, so you may want to take note of their value before changing the first ones).

Hope I've been clear! :-)

Another solution, one I created to solve your exact problem in SATB music:

Go to the Scriptorium, and find my "NWslurs" font (helpful files). This has a selection of slurs and ties that can be used as free-floating text items.

Instead of placing a "real" slur or tie with the notation editor, place a "text" slur or tie. The only catch is that the "text" slur or tie will not be interpreted in sound playback or MIDI export.
