appearing and disappearing staves

How do I include a staff that doesn't last for the whole composition?  For example, if I want 8 bars of trumpet in the middles of a longer compostion, I don't want an empty staff full of rests cluttering up the rest of the score.  How do I start and stop the staff?

you could make everything after where you want the staff to disappear hidden and have the ending bar set as open(hidden). the staff is still there but if you do not run on nwc itself.  It would look better if you had a visible barline at the point where the staff ends in the middle of the piece.  It would look weird if the staff just cuts off into thin air!

This is a frequent question. I believe you are referring to the printed score.

The best solution is to make placeable Windows metafiles (WMF) via Print Preview > copy. Place the WMFs into a word processing document. Crop as necessary. This is done on a page-by-page basis.

If your trumpet is a brief part of a long composition, it might be best to compose all the staves except for trumpet as a single NWC file, and compose the trumpet part independently as another file. It is not necessary to use numerous blank measures. Then, you could place and crop the WMF only on the few pages where necessary.
