Yamaha PSS-780 MIDI problems

I'm trying to hook up my ancient PSS-780 to Cakewalk but despite trying everything I know simply can't get the MIDI stuff working. Anyone have any clues please before I throw the thing out of the nearest window ?????

Considering that this is a forum for NoteWorthy Composer, you may not get too much help with Cakewalk. That being said, the most common problem when connecting external keyboards is confusion about midi cables. The cable marked IN has to connect to your keyboard's midi OUT, and the cable marked OUT connects to your keyboard's midi IN.

If this doesn't help, hold off on tossing that Yamaha out the window until one of us can get there to catch it. :)

I know its a forum on NoteWorthy, but someone out there probably uses Cakewalk as well - its worth a shot ! I've checked the cables, still no go. Is there an ancient PSS specific driver needed ?

Probably not, midi is midi. Did you set your midi playback device to "External midi" or whatever your sound card calls the joystick/midi port? Same for midi input device. Does it work in Noteworthy?

I use a PSS 780, and I have no problems with MIDI connections in most programs - I haven't tried Cakewalk, though.

Does the keyboard work with other programs? If not, check that you are using the MPU-401 compatible device (i.e. check that it's installed and working). If it does, there's obviously some configuration problem with Cakewalk - RYFM!

I doubt that it is a problem specific to Cakewalk. There are lots of threads here to help you with setting up external MIDI. You should start by working to get MIDI output from your computer to your MIDI keyboard to work. Until this works, you cannot expect MIDI input to the computer to work. You have left out one of the most important parts of the equation. What kind of hardware are you using to connect MIDI cables to your computer? Are you using a soundcard joystick port, a SoundBlaster Live!Drive front panel, a USB MIDI box, a serial "To Host" connection, or something else?

Here are some threads that also deal with this topic:

I couldn't get it to work with either Noteworthy or Cakewalk. However I did get it to work with Logic Fun, a freebie with a computer mag !! Wierd. Not a bad programme either.
