problems with recording

I have some problems with recording from a MIDI-keyboard. I made a connection between my "Technics KN-550" keyboard and my PC via MIDI-cable. I also made all the settings listed in the HELP-file, but when I want to record some notes, the right notes aren't recorded correctly. I tried everything, but the PC always receives the wrong notes. Does anyone know, how to solve this problem?

When notes appear when you play on the keyboard, but they are at the wrong note pitch, this means that either:

1) You have a faulty MIDI cable, or more likely

2) You have a faulty MIDI Input device, or

3) you have a faulty MIDI keyboard

On the other hand, if by "wrong notes" you mean they are the wrong duration, you can find the solutions at the following threads dealing with MIDI keyboard input:

or 4) your keyboard's "Transpose" button is depressed... :)

I think I'll try to change my MIDI-Input-Device. Otherwise I'll have to buy a new MIDI-cable.

Thanks

FYI: It is very rare for a cable to be faulty and still allow communication between the keyboard and the PC. If you are experiencing random notes in NWC when you play on the keyboard, this strongly suggest a problem in your PC. It could be a buggy MIDI input device driver for your sound card, or it could be the sound card itself.

If you are using a sound card that is integrated into the motherboard of your PC, it is not uncommon for the MIDI input capability to be faulty out of the box (unfortunately). I have seen this personally on numerous "value" PCs.

Are you using a sound card, dedicated MIDI card, or an external MIDI interface to connect your keyboard to your PC?

I'm using a soundcard from ESS Technologies. My MIDI-Input-Device is MPU-401. I tried everything, but it still doesn't work. Is it possible that I get e "newer" version of my MPU-401-Device?

Do you have the MPU-401 play device working (from your PC out to your keyboard)? If not, you should get this working before drawing any other conclusions about the problem.

I would recommend that you try to find an updated driver for the MPU-401 functions of your sound card. If this doesn't work, you may not be able to get it to work.

I have a similar problem with an SB-PCI128 soundcard - occasionally, some of the MIDI channels (but not all of them) start transposing. Result - cacophony! This is usually preceded by a loud, high pitched scream from the card.

The problem only seems to affect playback under Noteworthy - if I try to playback .MID files under media player, there is no problem.

The only solution appears to be to shut down the PC, wait a while and restart.

Spooky, isn't it?!

PS - I blame Fred! The first time it happened, I was listening to his rendition of the Queen of the Night aria from "Die Sauberflöte".

PPS - only joking, Fred!
