Roland XP-30

Got a new Roland XP-30 synthesizer for Christmas. I was wondering if anyone has had experience attaching this, or something close, as the external midi device for Noteworthy. I've edited my ".ini" patch, and can get instrument changes, but everything is writing to a single staff. If I try to write in multiple staves, I get a single instrument playing ALL the staves!

For those that do not know, the Roand XP-30 is a MIDI capable keyboard. I gather that you want to play output to it, and capture notes played from it (your question is a little confusing). Once you have the necessary cabling from your computer to a MIDI keyboard, and the necessary MIDI drivers are installed on the computer, NWC can both play back to the device, and receive note data from it.

You setup play back to the device by configuring NWC for its use via Tools | Options | Midi | Devices used by play back. Then, in Staff | Staff Properties | Midi, you make sure this device is selected in the "Play back device" field. You use the Instrument defintions in the staff, combined with the staff MIDI Channel assignment, to control what instrument is heard.

You can setup for receiving MIDI data from the keyboard from Tools | Optiond | Record. You can further establish preset Import options when capturing live performances using Tools | Options | Import. The two commands that activate MIDI input are:

Tools | Record: This is used to capture a live performance that is performed while the currently active score is played

Tools | MIDI Input Active: This is used to enter notes in a step entry fashion. You can use the Pitch or Mod wheels to select note durations, in possible conjuction with your computer keyboard and mouse, then enter notes or chords that will be placed into the staff using the currently selected note properties.

My problem has been simplified somewhat, and thank you. But, there is still a major problem remaining. I can both recieve MIDI information from, and playback music through the XP-30. I'm used to having about 16 staves (in NoteWorthy), selecting a unique instrument for each staff, adding notation and playing the song right then and there. For most of my playback through the XP-30, I'm planning on using the Orchestral expansion set, which contains better sounding versions of the instruments I'm usually using. But when I select this patch on the keyboard, whichever instrument that is selected dominates the playback! That is to say, there isn't a different instrument playing on each staff, but they all play on the same one, regardless of the changes in instrument selection in NoteWorthy. Also, the keyboard appears to choose which instrument to play them all on depending upon which one the bottom staff is set on (if it is a Tuba, #35, then they all playback as a Tuba, or whatever #35 is in the patch I have selected). Now, if I mute the bottom staff, the keyboard looks for the next staff up that isn't muted to determine the instrument to playback on. I'm hoping this makes a little sense...

The main problem is that I can only play back through the keyboard on one instrument at a time, not a full orchestra as I'd like to. What do I do about it?

What happens when you play the samples?

If you still only hear one type of instrument, you need to consult your keyboard documentation to figure out how to get it to handle multitimbral parts. I see from its specs that it should handle it.

If the samples play properly, then you need to do the same with your music. Make sure that you assign different MIDI channels to each staff.
