Problems

Hello everybody,

I find the program excellent as it has a great interface for writing music quickly, but I have encountered a few problems, which I hope you won't mind me describing.

(1)
If I'm working in a score of say 20 instruments and I just want to listen to a few sections, I quickly alternate between PAGE UP/DOWN and clicking the MUTE button.  This causes an ALERT beep and it doesn't mute the staff. (it probably interprets this as a double-click and has an error)

(2)
If I record a midi track using another sequencer and play a bar with the following four crochets (D, Eb, E natural, and F) then I import this into Noteworthy, it shows the accidentals correctly.  But if I force the accidentals, insert an Eb key signature and transpose 0 (zero), then I lose the E natural and get the following progression (D, Eb, Eb, F).  That is an annoying bug when I have to reprint a lot of score!

(3)
When I import music from MIDI which was recorded in another sequencer, arrange the tracks into other music, and then paste each track into a new Noteworthy file, Noteworthy will choose MIDI channel 10 for one or more of the instrument tracks.  This is a problem when I play it back because one of the instruments makes noise.  Then I have to go find which track is at fault.

(4)
That's about it.  I would really like it if it could automatically have an instrument print to X full pages (eg. 40 bars of 1st violin formatted to fit on two full pages).  Would that be possible?  That would be an excellent addition.

Thank you, and I look forward to your comments.

Ed.

Hello Edward,

Problem 1 - use the Mute List on the Tools Menu, of if you just want to play a single staff then put your cursor at the start of the section you want to play and press shift f5

Problem 2 - I couldn't replicate this when entering the notes directly into a NWC stave. I ended up with an E-nat (with a natural accidental) following the Eb (without a flat accidental).  It seems strange that what you see after an import does not behave in the same way as something that looks identical but is input directly.  I would have thought that once "inside" NWC the notation and its behaviour would be indistinguishable.

Problem 3 - MIDI Channel 10 is often (but not always - sometimes it is Channel 16) assigned to percussion.  Are you looking at Staff Properties for each staff individually to find which one uses Channel 10.  If so, you will find it more quickly by using Score Review on the Tools Menu.  This lists the channel for all the staffs in the file.

Alternatively, I think if you record from a MIDI device to the import buffer you are able to specify which channels are imported to which staff.  This may allow you to avoid getting anything on Channel 10 in the first place.  However, I have never recorded from a MIDI device myself.  Perhaps someone who has can help us with this (and with problem 2).

Item 4 - a nice idea.  Part extraction is very fiddly and some additional software help with the page formatting would be useful.  It is particularly annoying that when you change the staff point size to squeeze things onto one fewer pages text items are not scaled as well.  It would be nice to have everything scaled up or down to fit the specified number of pages as you suggest - like making an Excel spreadsheet fit.  Try adding it to the wish list.

Au contraire - I find it annoying that it does just the opposite, in my experience.  I select a text size for the lyrics that suits the eye power of my choir, and then tweak the score size to fit on a reasonable number of pages.  But whenever I do this, the lyric font size changes and I have to change it back manually.

It sounds like horses for courses; perhaps there should be a global option as to whether to do this scaling or not.

The auto-scaling works on Staff Bold, Staff Italic, and Staff Lyric, nothing else.
Sometimes I want auto-scaling, sometimes I don't, but the program never does what I want...

I didn't know about autoscaling, but it seems that if you don't want it, but want to use the Staff fonts, it's simple enough to modify one of the user fonts - go to Page Setup, Fonts, Modify, and make the necessary change.

Problem 3.

It probably shouldn't select channel 10 or 16 when creating a new staff (CTRL-A)

I know I've come across that before.

All good here though
