Saving files with Vista

I have 1.75C version which I purchased in June, and last week purchased a new PC with Windows Vista Home Basic on it.
Vista can't save any changes to my Noteworthy files created by Windows XP.  When I try to save a file, it says "Unable to Make a BAK file.  Save anyway?"  I click "Yes," it then reads "Unable to save file" and I can't close the file without losing all my data.  Has anyone else experienced problems saving files with Vista?  I had Windows XP on my other PC and it worked great.  I haven't tried making any new files with Vista - I'm afraid I'll lose anything I create.

It's really frustrating.  Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Linda

G'day Linda,
this sounds like a file system rights issue to me.  Or maybe a non-existant folder...

Can you check where NWC is trying to save files to and whether you actually have rights to that location?  Are you an administrator user on the machine?

In the meantime I'll check with one of my staff who's played with vista and see if he has any ideas...

Hi Lawrie,

Managed to successfully save a simple change to a file just now.  I had to right?-click (I think it was right-click) on the Noteworthy icon in my desktop & tell it to run as administrator.  Thanks for the tip!

Aha!  That means that you probably don't have file system rights to where NWC is saving its files.

Can you tell me where that Is?

Go to:
|Tools|Options|Folders (tab) and you'll see listed:

  • Song Files
  • Print Preview Copy
  • Config Files
  • New File Templates
  • Auto Save/Recovery
  • Instrument Trees

Thanks

Linda,

Whenever something like this happens, you can at least save your work with NWC2. It sounds like work, but it's a whole lot less work than starting over again:
Start Notepad with a new file, say 'staff1.txt'. Copy the first staff in Noteworthy and copy the contents into staff1.txt.
The next staff goes into staff2.txt, and so on.
After you have figured uit what prevents Noteworthy from saving your precious file, go back and re-create your staves.
You will have re-enter global settings, but at least the bulk of your work is safe.

A simpler solution is "save as" and write to a memory stick. Well, just so long as you don't lose your work!

cheers,
Rob.

Linda,

if you have not already upgraded to NWC2 it is well worth doing so. You can keep both versions on your PC if you like  and if you are happy with NWC2 you can when you wish transfer your existing files to that destination
