ties and slurs

Just one more question I have. I am a bit confused about ties and slurs. Do ties ALWAYS connect 2 different notes and do slurs ALWAYS connect 2 notes that are the SAME note?

Thanks!

James

Actually, it's the other way around; ties ALWAYS connect two notes that are the same; slurs connect 2 notes that are different.

I agree with Graham but would like to add notes of identical pitch can also be slurred instead of or in addition to being tied, e.g., tied notes are part of a larger phrase.  If you start a tie when the same pitched note does not follow, the tie may continue to the end of the piece (or beyond).  This can come in handy for a bell chord or a rolled chord but can cause headaches when you hear a stuck note at the end of the piece.
