trouble with my sound card

sorry if I'm duping another thread here, but I went through a few different searches and didn't find anything that could help me.

I used to have a desktop with soundblaster live and windows xp and had no problems. Then I got a laptop with xp and since I couldn't add a sound card, I got a soundblaster live external sound card that connects through usb, and had no problems. I recently got a new laptop with Windows 7 and now I have problems. I can't get NWC to see my external card anymore. I know it is working because I can pull up midis in windows media player and they play fine, and there are no problems in the device manager. I uninstalled and reinstalled NWC, no luck... uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the sound card, no luck. Anybody have any ideas?

My laptop came loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium and won't run many of the programs I use with Windows XP.  Apparently I need to buy an upgrade of Win 7 to get a feature that will run XP stuff.  I haven't done that yet, but it might be the same problem you're experiencing.    Kiss a hundred dollars or so goodbye, if the solution is to upgrade.

but everything works... the sound card installs and runs fine, and nwc runs fine, it's just nwc won't see the sound card.

Umm, I seem to recall that Creative got, umm, "creative" about drivers for Vista/Win7 and their older devices and didn't provide full drivers for them.  You are probably getting the MIDI from Media player et al via the Windows MIDI device as there is also no MIDImapper anymore.

The sounds coming from the Soundblaster will be audio only, not MIDI driving the inbuilt synths.

Creative did this to force people to buy new hardware.
I plays 'Bones, crumpets, coronets, floosgals, youfonymums 'n tubies.
