Playback devices

PLease help,
Some of my musical works lose the ability to play from time to time, when this occurs & I look in Staff,Staff properties,Play back device - I see that it defaults to <unavailable>,
This can be easily rectified by selecting my sound-card but I would prefer not to have to do this, and am curious to find out a possible reason. ?

Thank you ,

Rich Nye

One guesses that knowingly or unknowingly you or your computer are running some other audio or multimedia application that has siezed your output device.

Your selected play back device (in staff properties) is stored as a numeric index, based on the number of devices added to the play back availiability list in Tools, Options, MIDI. If you setup your staff MIDI properties, and then later change the number of devices used for play back, you can end up with staff play back set to an unavailable device (if you decrease the number of devices used for play back). In general, it is best to select one, and only one, device for play back in Tools, Options, MIDI unless you know exactly what you are doing. We generally recommend that you select the MIDI Mapper as your lone play back device.
