Phrase break question. 16 years ago I am looking for a way to insert a phrase break in the staff. In my nomenclature a phrase break in a vocal staff looks like this // (two slash marks). Quote Selected
Re: Phrase break question. Reply #1 – 16 years ago Put two slash marks in as text.It is called a "cæsura". It should start on the fourth line from the bottom of the staff. Quote Selected
Re: Phrase break question. Reply #2 – 16 years ago Thanks again. I was a vocal major, but never heard that term. I never stop learning.Thom Quote Selected
Re: Phrase break question. Reply #3 – 16 years ago "Cæsura" is the original latin spelling. The most often used spelling I saw is the italian "cesura".By the way: the actual sound is the same, unless you use the German latin reading: "ka-esura"... Quote Selected
Re: Phrase break question. Reply #4 – 16 years ago ...I've had conductors call a cæsura "railway tracks" -- the fermata "the pig's eye"--the coda sign "the gunsight" Quote Selected
Re: Phrase break question. Reply #5 – 16 years ago Well, in Italy the "fermata" (that, by the way, is itself Italian and means "stop") is called "corona", that means "crown". Quote Selected
