Bad format when using Pick Up Notes

The type of music I write always involves a pick up note, this is a beat in a bar of its own at the start of the tune, which is made up in rhythm at the end. Although NWC tells me how to Audit Bar lines with a pick up note, it doesn't say how to align the page properly, because on a print preview, the sections begin and end at all the wrong places, can anyone help?

I must have missed this. How do you audit pieces with a pickup note?

Instead of having perfectly set out music (such as 4 bars per line, or something similar) when you involve a pick up note, it becomes a bit complicated, but INSTEAD of having 4 bars per line, you have the pick up note, plus the first 4 bars in the first line, then 4 bars in the next, etc, etc, then the last one has 3 bars plus the remainder of beats left over by the pick up note.

"Help" gives clear instructions on how to audit these types of music : You simply change the bar line to a double, then audit as usual, but it seems impossible to align these in the printouts or print previews... HELP, pleeeeeeease!!

Audit bar lines has nothing to do with the printed output. That depends on the contents of the measures, so it was a coincidence that you got exactly 4 bars per line each time. You can fiddle with things like staff point size and margins, or pad certain bars with (Insert Text, preserve width on) blanks to make them wider so they break sooner.

Ah. I'd been temporarily adding rests to fill the first measure, and then removing them.

I have noticed that some publishers use a double bar at
the end of each line (musical line, not physical printed line)--even where it falls in the middle of the measure. I think that if you do this, Noteworthy will place printed-line breaks at the double lines if that is
"convenient."

I've basically given up on the idea of professionalism on this thing! It seems that if you want justification with pick up notes, you just have to insert rogue bar notes to even things up..... it looks better than it did, I swear!!

Maybe this feature will be yet improved upon in later versions...?

Hang on... an earlier message gave me sight to fix the problem, provided you are willing to take the time, it is possible to pad out the lines by entering lines of lyrics, but of course, this makes ugly words appear on your music.

I looked up help on Lyrics, and from there I worked out that by entering something like ___ ___ ___ (using underscores instead of words) it's possible to spread out the bars without having text appear, and the more underscores/less spaces you use, the more space you leave... and what's even better is that it doesn't even look out of place, if it's done in moderation!

Thanks all for your help, but I eventually used my own initiative!!!

Jaicket,

I don't understand the need you had to use Lyrics (or teXt items, which is another solution) for your problem.
Or, more precisely, I do *not* see the relation with "pick up notes". Whatever the notes or bars are, NWC will act the same, i.e it will place line break where it is logical.

Anyway, when you mention "I've basically given up on the idea of professionalism on this thing", I'm sure you've been missing a great part of NWC capabilities.
I don't say that NWC can do everything, but usually it does it more quickly and more properly than many other "tenors" of scoring programs.

And a specially good thing with NWC, is that you can act on it by submitting wishes on the wish list... I know that some wishes get realized, often at the perfect time when I needed it deeply. I especially think of ...lyrics, since I "met" NWC in a version which did not have this, and that decided me on registering the program. I also "eventually used my own initiative" more than once, but never regretted to use NWC. And to ask questions on this forum either, thanks to the other users.

I still can't figure what your trouble was, maybe it was not clear enough? Often a good small example (an .NWC file you upload somewhere in which you put an extract of your file which causes your trouble) is the best explanation. But this is more convenient on the newsgroup I think, since you can attach files there.

Hoping that your solution is convenient,

NWCly yours,
   Dominique

I can assure you, my problem was possibly not very common, but 100% genuine, and an apparent flaw in NWC. For those of you interested, I've included two files of the same song in a newsgroup email with the subject "Miracle Lyrics: Solved"

I have added the request into the wish list, but since you lot don't know what I'm blabbering on about, there's every chance he wont either, so, I guess I'll just carry on the way I'm doing.

I see Jaicket wrote his question some years ago.  Hope he found his answer.

Today, it is simply this.

If your song starts with a pickup note, pad the beginning of that measure with rests to make it a full measure.  Then highlight the rests, use the properties command and hide them.  On page setup, make the bar count start at 0.

To set your line breaks, highlight the bar line that you want to be at the end of a line, press Control E, and set the force system break option.

I think this answers all the questions raised by Jaicket. I can't remember if these features were part of NWC back in 1999...but the magic of Noteworthy is that Eric and his crew are continually improving it.

If there is a repeat you will also have to add a open repeat bar after the rests and hide it also.
