Thanks so much for this! I installed LoopMIDI, added a connection, rebooted, opened up NWC, and MS GS Wavetable Synth was an option in the MIDI setup window. Seems it just needed something to kick-start it.
Also, as an aside, WMP will now play .mid files, and my KaraFun now has sound with karaoke files. VLC's still complaining, but I'll sort that out later (maybe with a reinstall).

I have just purchased a Windows 10 ASUS VivoBook and am having troubles getting playback sound. I have the latest version of NWC.
When I open up the Tools → Options → MIDI dialogue, there are no devices listed -- the boxes are empty.
I've tried troubleshooting the hardware and the program with Windows Troubleshooter, but it doesn't find anything wrong. Looked at downloading MIDI drivers, but that looks confusing and risky.
When I try playing a MIDI file in WMP, it suggests that there "might not be a sound device installed..." When I try VLC, I get the following:

MIDI synthesis not set up: A sound font file (.SF2) is required for MIDI synthesis. Please install a sound font and configure it from the VLC preferences (Input / Codecs > Audio codecs > FluidSynth).
Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format "MIDI" (MIDI Audio)
Other sound and video files work fine.
Has anyone else had this problem or worked out a solution? Any ideas I can try? Any recommendations for MIDI drivers to download?
Further research. Adding a dotted E below the problem chord actually adds two dots!
And even more experimenting with the original problem chord reveals that if you remove the middle note ([ctrl]+[backspace] on the same line as it) makes the lower note's dot jump down to the lower space. Re-entering the note without specifying stem direction and letting it default to stem down leaves the extra dot in its correct position.
I just use the [alt] key as I'm typing (alt,t,a for beaming) or, if I want beaming different to the default, just select the group of notes (using [shift] with cursor arrows) and hit ctrl-b. As for bar numbering, set that up in the page setup dialogue, and they number automatically as you type.
Thanks for the advice so far, folks. I do want to uninstall one of them before I do the upgrade, so I guess that'll be the one I haven't used for yonks, 1.75. No sense having two full versions on there now.
I have both v.1.75 and v.2 beta installed on my machine. I've searched the site (FAQ, upgrade area, etc.), and the only reference to the need to remove previous versions is that it's not necessary. Now, of course, I want to end up with just the one installation on my PC, so should I remove the v.2 beta or the older version that I haven't used in ages? They're in directories called "NoteWorthy Composer" and "NoteWorthy Composer 2" if that's relevant at all.
Generally, I'm led to believe that one should uninstall beta versions before installinga final release, but is that the case with NWC2?
I'm using the "nwc2_nwc175cd" setup file, if that's relevant.
