quadruplet

How do you notate a 4 quater note quadruplet in the space of 3 quater notes?

Try searching for "n-tuplet" as this general subject has been covered before. While NWC doesn't natively support anything beyond triplets, there are workarounds that have been posted elsewhere on the site, also try the "tips and tricks" section

Many times. But there is no solution that gets the appearance and playback correct in all situations.
Problems are:
  • The placement of the text 4 needs to be changed if the page layout changes.
  • The notes are not spaced closer together than normal quarter notes (as they should be)
  • Some rhythms on other staves are impossible to align
  • The bracket doesn't always end at the right edge of the last note
  • The playback durations are often incorrect

The problem is not so much the quadruplets as it is with workarounds necessary in other staves.  It is straightforward to temporarily increase the tempo by a factor of 4/3 and insert a text 4 in the middle, but the duration of ordinary notes in other staves need to be lengthened by 1/3.  If the other notes are already dotted, just tie each note to a copy of itself w/o the dot and half the duration (e.g. dotted half to quarter).  If the rhythm is more complex, perhaps filling up 6 beats and then tripletizing the whole measure would work.  If, as Rick said, some rhythms are impossible to align so figure out the right number of 64ths & 32nds to add to each note to get as close as you can.
