Suspended Cymbal

Hi,

I've recently found out how to insert percussion into some of the compostions I've made (using "channel 10"), but is there a suspended cymbal to use in the music? I would like to have a suspended cymbal to gradually crescendo to add some effect and I would appreciate any replies.

Thanks,
Daniel Carrasco

Sounds like the effect you are looking for is called "Reverse Cymbal" and is one of the percussion voices on MIDI Channel 10.  I forget which note will produce it since I'm not at my "music" computer at the moment :) but the NWC drumref.nwc file will show which note it is.

Actually, "Reverse Cymbal" is not on channel 10, but an instrument choice (just like piano or flute or violin...).
This may work for you, but you may also want to try some of the channel 10 cymbals (C#, D#, A below middle C).
You could also try these same cymbals (on channel 10) and select Violin (#41) as the instrument to get a "brushes" effect.  I often put a big slur over all the notes, and sometimes put tenuto on them to smooth it out, so that it doesn't sound too "machine-gunny."
(...and use dynamics one level lower than you think you need...)

Something here is bound to help - I hope.

Just spent some time with this - the brushes don't work on the cymbals! only on the snare! not even on the toms! (at least on my soundcard...)
Sorry!
Another technique I tried was to use the sustain pedal (you know, like for the piano?) to smooth out the cymbal roll (to eliminate the "machine-gunny" aspect).
